Also from the UK - I ate jam on bread 4 hours after my surgery and whilst painful I'm glad I was too hungry to be picky - now 7 days post op and have been able to eat anything that isn't crunchy (ie taco shells, tortilla chips, crisps etc) no meds whatsoever, not even paracetamol and everytime I drink the swelling goes down a little more

I'm 17 and got my tonsils removed. I am on night 4 and I think the scabs are dissolving which stings. I'm afraid to swallow and it is almost time to take my Tylenol with codeine but that will really such. It is painful to take it any other time. So far this recovery has been awful I have been in a lot of pain and have barely eaten. Day 3, yesterday, I tried to eat but my tongue has been so swollen it pushed everything out of my nose. I hope the scab does its thing tonight and by morning I'll start to feel better. I also get this terrible ear pain. All of this makes me question why I am taking pain medication when it dosent take away pain?

I'm 21 years old. Had my tonsillectomy 3 days ago, was kept in overnight due to the time and didn't feel too bad, had anti sickness drugs as I was being sick in between eating my cheese sandwich and yoghurt. The next morning I had 2 pieces of toast and left. Had some biscuits for lunch then tried more toast due to built up. I later had a chicken sandwich. 6 o'clock in the morning I woke up being sick, had some jelly in the morning and was sick again, had a roast pork dinner and was sick again. Stopped taking codeine as I thought it was that but was sick after ibuprofen too so stopped that. I'm on day 3 now and feel a lot better, still very sore and swear my uvula just keeps getting bigger?! Managed to keep 2 crumpets down so far with no painkillers taken as of yet. Hope I can keep some more meals down!

I got my tonsils out 7 days ago and yes this is horrible. Iwwouldn't want anyone to go through something like this. Today was pretty good. But yesterday was pretty bad. Right now my right side looks pretty good but my left is full of mucus. Will this c**p go away? And I don't know what the scabs are supposed to look like so I don't know if I've developed them yet or not.

Hi I'm 40. And in great health. ! 2 months post my tonsillectomy. I'm a huge baby with anything painful and cry , even when I stump my toe , so I anticipated the worse . Actually ..... When I look back at two months ago I will say it was a pleasant experience. I got to lay on the coach for two weeks, out of work and got to eat ice pops .... And let's not forget ... Reality tv to watch. I will admit , the scan thing was nasty. But overall pain was bearable and the weight loss was nice . I was already thin , but who doesn't want to be 6 pounds lighter ? So keep some ice packs in freezer , alternate between oxy , benderyl , Motrin and Tylenol. It'll be a breeze !

I am 13 and I had my tonsils taken out 5 days ago. The first three days were fine. I could eat drink sleep. The usual. But now it feels like hell broke loose in my throat. I can't swallow my saliva. It hurts when I talk. I can't sleep. It even hurts when I breathe. I'm starving because I refuse to eat. I feel like the pain will never end. My uvula is swollen. I was born with a curved uvula so it's rubbing against some of my right scabs. The doctors said I will have bad breathe for 2 weeks and it makes some of what little food I can eat taste terrible. The mornings are the worst. I also had my nose quarterised (spelling, sorry) so yeah. Ok enough of my ranting, I want to help some people. When I can eat I eat baby food. I don't eat like the paste stuff but like the cereal snacks and yogurt melts. They melt in your mouth. Also Root Beer helps. I don't know why. I don't know how other people would feel about it. But I swish it between my teeth and swallow and the froth feels great. Also try to sleep sitting up if you have problems with sleeping. This forum helps me feel a lot better. It makes me feel a lot safer. Thank you. :3

I'm a 15 year old and I just got my tonsils out 10 days ago. The worst part is that I'm on day ten and my scab still hasn't fallen off. Which kinda scares me. I haven't ate for 7 days because it is to painful to eat anything. I drink Gatorade and water and tea. Day1- I was complete fine no pain, so I thought I was going to do really good Day2- until I got to day 2 it was so pain full. I was taking medication every 3 hours. And that was the same with day 3-4-5. I didn't get every much sleep at all. I would wake up in pain that was unbearable. Day 6 - it got so much better day six and 7,8,9. I can sleep now, but I still wake up one time in the middle of the night because of a dry mouth. Make sure to drink a lot of water. Day 10 - like I said I'm scard because my scab hasn't falling off. But I have very little pain, but lucky for the people who can deal with pain Good luck!! Drink drink drink water or gaterade or tea or apple juice and remember to eat popsicles and jello also Applesauce. Or even anything you can handle

I had my tonsils out July 23 today is August 2nd. I am 15 years old, and as bad as i thought it would be it wasnt.. Although i read not to eat ice cream.. I did it anyway. Bad choice. It is awful because you want to cough and gag it because of all the phlyem. So i would definitely not eat ice cream. The first day out of my surgery i was hungry. My mom made me scrambled eggs and i ate them just fine. The first three days i was eating a thing of pudding or yogurt. But it started to hurt to swallow so i stopped. I had a liquid pain medicine but it didnt do much except put me to sleep which sucked when i woke up with a very dry sore throat. So by the 6th day i stopped taking my medicine. I still couldnt eat but i drank as much water as a could and i could talk and i felt great. But last night on my 11th day as i was up kinda late watching OITNB it was 11pm, and the scabs came off and and i was bleeding alot and i was terrified. My mom rushed me ti the emergency room freaking out ( she had her come open when she had her tonsils out at age 17) so she thought mine may have came open to. Anyway, a doc came in and looked in my throat and said everything was good my scab had just fallen off. He also told me of you ever start to bleed put a few tissues in your hand and if your blood fills up your hand your okay, but if its more than a handfull theres a problem. For the first time in 12 days, i woke up this morning and was able to swallow just fine, and i could drink water right away too. Today is my 12th day, and its about 5:00pm and its.continued to be a pretty easy recocery. Even though i thought i was going to bleed out ha ha.

My name's Zach. I'm 20 years old. I had my tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy on Thursday, July 30, 2015. It's now Monday night. After the surgery, while I was in the recovery room, I went to the bathroom to review the work that they did on me. It was nearly all black due to the cauterization, but I did notice that the surgeon grazed my upper and lower lip with the cauterizer and whacked the tip of my uvula with it as well. As it turns out, the only part that is surely killing me right now is the tip of my uvula, which has a nasty yellow scab over it. Sunday morning, I ran out of meds. My doctor has me on hydrocodine, meperdine, a syringe to help with vomiting and some oral mouthwash to prevent infection. Since the doctor's office was closed, I had to suffer through the worst night of my life. Monday morning, I had my mother run up to their office when they opened and get a refill. She called me, saying that the doctor was on vacation and that she had to drive 4 towns over to another doctor that was covering his patients for him. Before she got home with my meds, I felt some mucus-like gunk in my throat while I was in the shower. So I spit it out to discover a nasty, black bloody discharge. I instantly felt better and could breathe and relax for 5 minutes. Upon inspection, I realized I had spit up my left scab and blood continued to pour out of me for 30 minutes. It stopped and scabbed over a little while after. I was freaking out uncontrollably. But now everything is fine. The meds I'm on are doing really well. I'm not eating too much. Chicken Noodle and French Onion soup here and there and the occasional popsicle and jello. I did dip some bread in my soup and it went down okay, but no solid foods yet. So far I've lost 12lbs. I've been drinking 2 gallons of water a day and most of my time is spent playing Batman: Arkham Knight or peeing. Any of you about to have this procedure done, just be sure to make your doctor write some future prescriptions cause you WILL run out of meds and need some more. But as long as you take them on time and keep gulping water, you'll be okay. It's not fun, and it will hurt unbearably at some points, but it's okay. Another thing I noticed was my ears hurt, I can barely open my mouth cause my jaw is sore and my lymph nodes are buldging out my neck. I wrapped an ice pack around it and the swelling went down though. I like to think that my scabs have shrunk and are healing, but I don't know for sure. Pain has not calmed down at all since day 1. It hurts just as much as it did when I left the hospital, except for Sunday, when I had no pills. I'll keep you posted everyday and let you know what gets better and what worsens. I'm praying for all of you that are going through this!

Zach again. It's 1am as I start day 6. I've lost 14lbs. so far. My uvula is also healing nicely. I noticed the swelling has gone down and the scab is going away too. Yesterday morning I watched a little tv and just laid around. Around 11am, the right side of my throat, just below my uvula and out of sight, started itching and stabbing me. It was so painful. Tears poured from my eyes. I tried drinking water but it BURNED! Room temperature water started burning the back of my throat! I was in such agony waiting for my alarm to go off at noon so I could take my meds. At 12pm, I poured my liquid medicine in a spoon and gulped it down. OUCH! Whatever concoction that was in it burned like heck! Washing it down with water only added to the pain. It felt like I just poured acid down my throat and then my teeth, jaw and scabs started pulsating in rhythm with my heartbeat. It gave me a headache! It felt like someone down inside my throat tied a rope around all of my teeth and started pulling down as hard as they could. I began crying and I blacked out. I came to about 10 minutes after to the sight of me pouring bloody drool all over myself. It still burned to drink water but I kept at it. Around 2pm I fell asleep accidentally. I woke up at 8pm in a world of hurt. I missed my medicine for 6pm and I just wanted to die. I couldn't drink or eat until 10pm and that's when I took my medicine. Fast forward to now at 1am and I'm okay. I keep taking selfies of the inside of my throat. The one I just took, my right scab is bruised and lightly bleeding. It aches when I swallow. But I can drink and take medicine just fine. I ate a snow cone and some French Onion Soup. I'm scared to eat anything remotely close to solids. People say I'm suppose to be eating more solidified food, but I know if I do, I'll just bleed and get sent to the ER. Having had hemorrhoids and kidney stones before, I can honestly say a tonsillectomy is the worst experience in my life. Some people are doing okay it seems, and praise God for that. But I'm just staring at my blank wall wondering if it's even worth it and if it'll ever be over. I've never been more depressed and sad in my life. I wish we were technologically advanced enough to where I could be in a coma for 3 weeks while I recover because this is inhumane.

So today is day 6 after my tonsillectomy. I was freaking out because the whole right scab shifted and i started spitting out blood last night. Finally got it to stop after gargling lots of ice water and went to bed. Woke up about 2 AM in the most agonizing pain i have ever been it. The pressure and pain was in my throat, my sinuses and my ears. I could barely swallow any water. Took advil and went back to sleep. Got woken up by my partner asking if i was okay because i started gagging and gasping for breath. Checked this morning, turns out the ENTIRE scab came off in one fell swoop while I was sleeping. The pain is a lot better now though still a little raw. Most horrible night ever.
