I am 17 and on day 5 of my tonsillectomy (day one being the day i had the op). My scabs are starting to fall off in small pieces which is uncomfortable and looks completely gross. The sight of the scabs for me is worse than the pain im feeling. Ive had no bleeding whatsoever and ive had not much pain at all. After my operation i was in recovery drinking water as i didnt even want my pain meds. Before i was allowed to go home i had drank 7 jugs of water (in 5 hours) and discharged myself early as i wasnt in any pain. I got home and ate a ready meal with beef and potatoes. This went down fine. The anesthetic must have made me hungry because in hospital i also ate a sandwich and a half and still wanted more. The next day i was in pain which was like having a sore throat but manageable and at this point i was taking paracetamol and ibuprofen every two hours switching between the two. Day three was very painful i cried for an hour as it felt like blisters which were on fire in my throat and i couldnt bear it. I went to docs who prescribed antibiotics in case i had got infected and some soluble codiene. The codiene is AMAZING. Best pain relief imaginable although gave me nausea and stomach pain. The biggest problem i had from day one was my swollen uvula... it was the size of a ping pong ball. I couldnt swallow or even breathe at some points without it flapping about or choking me. I have found that keeping my mouth clean and drinking plenty along with regularly taking nuerofen (1 tablet every 4 hours) has reduced the swelling. My scabs look "normal" according to my mom which i trust as 3/5 of my siblings have had their tonsils out so she has seen this before! White scabs around the edges of my throat, left and right at the back of my throat and either side of my uvula. These are quite thick and have a bad smell and taste (sorry to be gross but similar smell and taste to sick :( sorry!). Keep drinking plenty, try and eat as normally as possible things such as toast and potatoes/noodles/soup/stew etc are quite nice. Icy things havent helped me at all in fact made it worse. DO NOT under any circumstance try to pick your scabs! They need to come away naturally. Dispite being told not to, clearing my throat, gargling and coughing hasnt caused any problems. Hope you all have a relatively painless recovery with no problems. :)

I'm on day 5 of my recovery, first 3 days were pretty manageable I ate Mac and cheese, lots of jello, mashed potatoes, soup, and drank mostly gatorade. I thought I was going to be one of the lucky few that didn't have too much pain but on day 4 (yesterday) I woke up with the most awful headache I've ever had in my life, it was truly unbearable I just layed in bed and cried and cried and cried for over an hour, no pain meds were helping, I'm 18 and went home for spring break so my moms taking care of me and she called the surgeon and he said it was due to dehydration. I drank as much as I possibly could with the pain and woke up today feeling much better. I'm still in quite a bit of pain as the scabs are coming off but I'm hoping this is my turn around point!
The scabs do suck because When they begin falling off you feel like you have something scratchy caught in your throat and it is a bit painful but not as bad as people make it seem!! Good luck everyone! (:

Had my tonsils taken out a week ago so this makes it day 8 counting op day. Days 1-2 were the same, all I did was drink Gatorade, water and soup for food. I slept most of the time because my Meds were new to me( first time taking narcotics) so it wasn't very painful for me. Day 3-5 were so excruciatingly painful, specially waking up. I forced myself to eat food such as ice cream, yogurt, mash potatoes, chicken noodles. I cry every time I took my Meds because the pills were so big and often they got blocked with my swollen uvula. Dairy made the scabs even thicker and leaves a very bad after taste in your mouth that lasts for days. I suggest brushing your teeth 3 times a day to get the horrid poo taste off your mouth. Day 6 and 7 were the best. I managed to eat any food my mom cooked those days. Except for the early morning of day 7 at 2 am, the left side of my throat was on fire so I went to see it with a flashlight. I was surprised to see that the while scab on my left side was taken off and there was pool of blood that kind of froze over or clotted there. The color was dark red so I guess it was there for a while. During this the bad taste disappeared about 70% and only occurred after I swallow. Today is day 8 11:55 pm and I about to brush my teeth and wash up then go to bed. Hopefully my right scab would fall off during my sleep so I will take 2 tablets of Percocet. I also forgot to mention I had my adenoids taken out and that too tasted and smelled like complete c**p whenever I breath and blow my nose to clear mucus. Hopefully this will cure me of my halitosis that I get from the stinking tonsil stones and very large tonsil crypts. I would recommend this surgery because so far it has helped me breath through my nose way better and smell way better. It is a super painful surgery so be prepared if you are getting it done and live your life in the couch for 2 weeks. Speedy recovery and safe life to everyone. I am out. ;)

I'm an 18 yo female, had my tonsils out about a week ago. The first day was awesome being on all the anesthesia and such. Following day was terrible, my uvula swelled so much that I couldn't breathe or swallow well enough so I went to the ER to get an IV and a steroid shot to help and went home feeling better. Next few days were pretty comfortable aside from the fact that the liquid pain med burned my mouth and any pills I was taking kept getting caught in my throat and making me choke. As such, I haven't been taking any pain meds or anything else for that matter. My diet consists of water and more water. I've tried to have smoothies and mash potatoes but I never get past a couple of sips/bites. Now At about a week later I'm in terrible pain, mostly my ears and head, but having a hard time swallowing simple H2O too. Hoping its the scabs healing and that means this is almost over. At this point I'm medicating with ice packs and pillows.

I am on day 6 of my recovery. There is white scabs all over my throat. I have been eating a little bit, drinking a lot. My medicine is keeping me up. It's torturing. It makes me sleepy but keeps me from sleeping. After about 5 mins I wake up coughing. The scabs sting sometimes but not a lot. I should be getting better in my last 4 days as long as I keep on drinking lots and eating more!

Try mashed potatoes. I know a lot of pepino are telling you to eat those but you should! I got sick of them so I add sour cream and cheese to it. Others are jelly, soup, cottage cheese and macaroni and cheese, pudding and yogurt. I hope i helped!

One of mine scabs just fell off literally and it was the most pain I've been in! It's felt like someone just stabbed me in the throat. No bleeding but seriously cried in pain and this has been a very painful process obviously. The pain only lasted for about 15mins..gargles cold water and put an ice pack on my neck.

I'm on day 10 and the whole thing has been a nightmare. I've thrown up, I've not been able to eat or drink. Then I started to get better about day 8 and tonight I started puking some blood but mostly scabs and bile again with diarrhea.

I am 16 and on day 6. The first few days were nothing more than a sore throat, with a little bit of pain. Drinking plenty of water is very important! Throughout these days, I've had upwards of 60-70 bottles total. Day 4 and 5 were perfect, no pain at all! I ate a big burger for lunch, another burger with a side of fries for dinner, 2 sausage and pepper sandwiches, and a hot fudge sundae to top it off. But today was the worst. While standing outside, part of the scab on the left side of my mouth fell off and I started bleeding profusely. It was gushing out and would not stop! I eventually called 911 as a precaution because my doctor said bleeding more than a tablespoon is an emergency and it was much greter than a tablespoon. Because of the situation that occurred today, I'm now back to soups and liquids. All that food yesterday and the day before could have caused it to become loose and today it just happened to fall off so I'm going to lay low from now on. Leaned my lesson!

I'm 15, and I'm on day 5 after the surgery. It has been a nightmare, I regret even thinking about the surgery. I'd rather have a sore throat every once in a while for the rest of my life then go through this. The first few days have been awful, especially at night. Everything is swollen to the point it hurts to swallow and I've lost my appetite. I don't even want to drink because of the pain. The medicine is disgusting, and it's not even for the pain! I was finally told, it's only to make me sleepy so I'll sleep through the pain. What bull c**p! I can't even sleep when I take it, all it does is leave me feeling dizzy and weak, drunk even. This is horrible. And my scabs are gross. Haven't lost any yet, but I can see them in the mirror if I use a flashlight. They make my breath terrible! And everything I eat has a disgusting after taste. This is just too much. Honestly, if you're out there reading this and considering surgery thinking 'it won't be so bad, everyone says I'll be okay and I'll be happy about it later' think again. I'd rather have a minor sore throat every week then go through this awfulness again.

Prednisone thins your blood and is similar to ibuprofen but stronger. This increases your risk of bleeding or hemorrhaging and you should not take it until day 10 (I'm a registered nurse by the way)
