Was this procedure worth the pain - and how much pain was it?

I'm a male, 40 yo. My problem started a year ago. At that time I thought (I wished) that was just something that I ate. I changed my diet, stopped eating stuffs that I ate just before the problem started. No results.....

Then I traveled abroad (vacation) and I was feeling better, but sometimes there were still a lot of blood.

Then, after a couple months I decided to see a doctor. Went to another one to confirm. Hemorrhoids grade 3. They gave me the options: traditional one (takes around 2 months for recovery and is very painful - a friend of mine had this one done a couple years ago) or the stapled one.

Back home I checked on the internet sites, foruns, etc and found about THD. It started to be done here just 2/3 years ago and not many doctors/hospitals do it, so it was difficult to get info about surgery, pain and recovery. I'm from Brazil.

After talking to another doctor about the THD, I felt that it was the one to be done. Less pain, fast recovery, back to normal life in a couple days.

I had the THD surgery done a month ago (november 12th in the morning): no food/drink since the night before; surgery at 9am (only 30 minutes). They took me to my room before lunch time and I was not feeling pain (zero). Had a light meal. At around 3pm went to the toilet to pee without a problem.

At night I started feeling the urge to use the toilet, but I couldn't. I sat there and nothing. I was afraid of using too much pressure. After a couple visits to the toilet and not able to defecate I felt a discomfort as my belly/stomach was full. Near midnight I went to the toilet again and finally! but just a really small one, like a earthworm with blood (not too much).

The next day I woke up and still no pain. So I was discharged and went back home (I even took the subway!).

For 3 days it was difficult to go to the toilet. A lot of times I felt the urge, I was pretty sure that I had to, but nothing..... the problem was during the night while I was sleeping. I had to wake up 5/6 times.

After 3 days I started to go to the toilet, but now the problem was that I had to go 5/6 times a day because I was still doing my "earthworm size" with almost no blood. And as I was seating too many times and unconsciously making the effort to contract, I felt a pain (muscle) as I had ride a bike for 10 hours straight! So I would sit to do business, but after 5 seconds I had to stand up.

A week after the surgery I went to my doctor as he asked. He gave me a medicine so I would go only 1/2 a day. As I was not feeling pain he said that I could restart my sports life - I could run again. And on the 3rd week I could go back to the gym and lift weight. He just said that it was better not to do exercises like leg press, squat, lunge.

So in 10 days I was back to my normal life, going normally to the toilet (no blood and nothing protruding), sports.

Another visit to the doctor (one month follow up) and now he said that I can do all the exercises (but not too much weight).

I read almost all posts and there is one thing that I didn't find and I think it will help many people here. I think that a lot of people here felt a lot of pain because their doctors didn't explain that there is an "imaginary line" that if they cross you will feel a lot of pain (too much sensibility). My doctor drew for me, but imagine a water bottle for example, half inch down the top there a ring where the lid stops. This is the imaginary line. When the doc inserts the THD if he has to sew on this part (from the top to the ring) because your hemorrhoids are too much external or too big, you will feel a lot of pain no matter what. If not, probably no pain or just a little. So talk to your doc and check if he has to come to close to the exit where the sensibility is too high.

Wish that it will help. Good luck!

I have grade 3 hemorrhoids and had a THD procedure done on 21/11/2014 in London but the one large hemorrhoid prolapsed again 9 days after the operation. Though its not as bad as before. I visited the hospital to get it checked and the doctor told me that I might need a regular hemorrhoidectomy.

I would like to know, is it possible to get the THD / HAL-RAR procedure done again to correct the condition? Any doctors / patients with experience please advise.

Found your entry, because I too have had terrific itch after THD surgery and was sure it was connected, but had not seen the symtom mentioned. Mine started 4 months after, has lasted 2+ months and now appears to be tapering off and hopefully disappearing. I'm glad to have found your post so that I know that I am not bonkers.

Got home from my THD a few hours ago (2/17/15). When I woke up from the surgery, there was a feeling of discomfort and dull pain that gradually increased as I became more lucid. It was soon quite painful. I told the nurse, who quickly administered pain medication through my IV. She did an excellent job working with me to achieve sufficient pain mitigation. When the first administration in the IV wasn't enough and I was still very uncomfortable, she adjusted until I could be reasonably comfortable. Then she put a few crackers on the table so that I could take percocet with a little food. One percocet certainly dulled the pain, and when I asked for a second, it relieved practically all the pain and discomfort I felt. We finished the paperwork and I walked out the door.I filled my scripts at the local pharmacy and made it home (courtesy of a friend, of course). Since that time, I've been drifting in and out of consciousness while lying on my stomach in front of Netflix. Working 3rd shift the night prior probably helps with the drifting. I've taken a second dose of both pain meds (Percocet and Toradol... and a beer) and have to say that as of right now, I'm feeling very good. Almost no pain. There is a little when I move about, but this really is to be expected. I don't know what to expect going forward as it's only been about 9 hours since my procedure, but it isn't bad so far.FWIW, I'm leaning on the liquid diet for the first day or two. I'm having a little bit of substance, but trying to take it very easy. Will post more after I wake up tomorrow.

2/18/15 - it's been about 26 hours since my procedure began. Waking up this morning, I was pretty miserable as the pain meds had worn off overnight. The meds take 30-40 minutes to really kick in, so this one one of those periods of time where life kinda sucks. It wasn't overwhelming, but very uncomfortable. I was going to try a sitz bath while waiting for the meds. A lot of people have mentioned the benefit. I imagined it would be most comfortable and beneficial without my "buttpon" in, so I took the string and gently pulled until the string broke off. Guess buttpon's staying put for a little longer. I got in the sitz bath for 5 or 6 minutes and really didn't notice much relief, so I got out and decided to try sitting on the throne at least to get the plug out. I didn't want to push very hard, and I wasn't really ready to go, so not much happened. - I've decided against the liquid diet today. I know going is going to be painful, but I also think it may be the fastest way to get back to normal. I really want to get the plug out of me as it's mildly uncomfortable in and of itself. Once I get beyond that, it seems that going will be the only period of really great discomfort in my day. Other than this development, there isn't a lot to say yet. I haven't gone yet, and the pain is similar to yesterday, which is taken care of pretty well with the meds. I'm only taking 1 percocet at a time right now. Plan to take an additional if I do have to use the throne and it's bad. For now, though, 1 at a time seems to be enough.

2/19/15 - Waking up today was better than yesterday. I was trying to go without another dose of percocet, and, honestly, I probably could have made it without anymore, but I'd had the urge to go, and attempting to go (without success) was irritating and painful. The Toradol wasn't really enough to take care of the pain, so I started the percocet again. I stopped Toradol this afternoon and started regular ibuprofen, 600mg. It seems to be about the same, honestly. With that and the percocet, there's no pain and I feel much better. I imagine in another day or two I really could be feeling well enough to go without the meds. Took a couple sitz baths today before beginning the percocet again. They were relaxing and seemed to have a positive effect. - Today was pretty uneventful, by and large. Looking forward to tomorrow and the potential improvement. Here's hoping.

2/20/15 - As has been the case the past couple days, waking up is among the low points of the day. It's not terrible, but the meds have definitely worn off and it takes a few minutes for the ibuprofen and percocet to kick in again. I'm finding that coffee also seems to help make me feel a little better. - so today I was finally able to "go." As expected, it hurt quite a bit... more than I'd hoped for being a few days along already. I didn't "go" very much, as I didn't want to push much (because of both being cautious and PAIN). I feel like I could have gone more if I stayed on the throne and fought it out, but, as I said, it hurt quite a bit and I figured I would probably live if I held off for a bit. I'm feeling pretty full, in general. I haven't been eating huge amounts, but at this point, it's been 3 days of slowly eating and nothing coming out. There's been lots of mineral oil, fiber, stool softener, a dose of laxative (I was starting to get concerned), and nothing to show for it. Honestly, I am still mildly concerned about it, but I figure the longer it takes, the further along the healing process is when it really happens. - If it weren't for potty time being such a challenge, I really wouldn't need much along the lines of pain medicine. At this point, I believe I could get by on just ibuprofen... except for trying to go potty. It's a double-whammy, though. It hurts when I try to go, but the pain doesn't end as soon as I stop trying. It seems to last until I take a percocet. Then it would be gone until I go again. Noon tomorrow will make about 4 full days since the procedure, so I think I should be beyond the worst of it. I hope to be able to begin detailing even greater progress in the bathroom. That's really the only thing that isn't getting back to normal. I braved an appearance at my place of employment today. It wasn't too bad; I was just working with a few things online and some procedural documents. Easy enough, really. - Depending on how things continue, I may or may not post every day from here on. While recovery isn't much fun, I have to say what I'm experiencing isn't really very far from what I expected (my surgeon was pretty straight-forward). I feel kind of like my posts are only confirming what you might expect you'll experience if you decided to undergo THD treatment.

Yes, i just had my second THD procedure done 12 days ago (the first one was in 2013). Apparently i am one of the lucky 4% of THD patients that had to have it done twice

I had THD surgery 16 weeks ago, I've been in constant pain ever since, ive been back to my specialist and other GP's all tell me the same thing, it went well, and all people are different when it comes to recovery times, I am much better now when I have a bowel movement, no blood and no pain, I just get a terrible aching that starts half way through the day and just gets worse, is sitting applying pressure and causing this? When will I ever recover
