ok I have tonsil stones and sometimes they hurt and sometimes they are fine but I don't get any bad breath from them but whenever I take them out the stink like hell... neways one way like the other guy said is to flex your tonsils meaning like if u move your throat around as if u have mucos that will not come up... if is easier than it sounds... sticking your finger in also helps but be careful not to scratch your throat of it will cut really easy and maybe swell... getting them taken out or getting them cleaned!! you don't have to get them taken out but if you get them cleaned it has almost the same affect as takin them out you dont get it nearly as much but even some ppl that got their tonsils taken out still get them so it wouldn't hurt to get them cleaned and see how they do... worked for my grandma and that's what Im gonna do !! ;-)

I just discovered this site tonight and realize this is what I have. To be honest, I am relieved it is not a more serious condition. I had mononucleosis when I was a sophmore in high school, which may have contributed to having them now at 41 years old. My wife was very grossed out when I told her they popped out of my tonsil.

She recommended a water pik. 2 days ago the stone came back so i got a pick today...first try POP it came right out. It looks so small when on the tonsil but when removed its HUGE. stinks badly....water pik for the win everyone. $34.00 cordless at CVS.

Ok...there are alot of post about Tonsil Stones and to be honest I didn't know what they were until I looked it up today. I remember about 2 yrs ago when I frantically called my sister about the white gunk in my mouth "where my wisdom teeth were growing". She said yeah that happened to me too its normal...Off and on I would get this white chunky gunk, with a bad odor...which is very disturbing for a female. Today I found them again only on my tonsils...I was freaking out thinking it was a serious condition so I started looking it up on google, wiki everything! I learned that it comes from food, a type of bacteria that feeds on bacteria? Whatever. I tried to think of when I would get this stuff, how long, what I ate ect. Then it clicked bacteria. I ate cheese for a snack all this week...(I'm a college student, its all I had on hand) then I realized I would always get them near my period or when I'm really stressed. And also this week when I skipped out on drinking my eight 8oz. glasses of water everyday. No wonder I got that c**p...I was feeding the bacteria with cheese (which is a bacteria) not drinking enough water to stay dehydrated which explained the reason why my body was forming so much mucus in my mouth (to compensate the lack of water supply). I read that alot of people scraped the stones out with their fingers (bad idea, our fingernails are like poison...full of bacteria) SO I brushed my teeth, flossed, rinsed dozens of times, gargled...then I downed like 2 bottles of water....the stones are gone and so is the bad breath. Thinking back in the past I know for a fact that I only got these stones during times of depression or lack of dehydration. Without water to wash everything down, bacteria was building in my mouth. The gargling mouthwash helped ALOT.

I am recovering from having my tonsils removed in hoped to never have to have the stones again. My doctor said that that was the only way to get rid of them. I asked about reading that some people say that they still get them, and he said that with the older methods of tonsillectomy, the cutting caused a lot of damage to surrounding tissue which caused some pockets to form again and also, most patients were'nt completely sewn up after the procedure, which left room to have a opening to catch nasal debris. So, I can see why some older persons who've had the procedure as a child would still be experiencing the stones. I do not know what you can do to get rid of them though permanently. It's a gross thing to have to live with. It ruined a lot of my years in life.

Previously I just coughed, gargled, swallowed hard & cleared my throat to remove a couple of larger stones. That didn't work for one that has been irritating me for the past week. I've tried digging it out & scraping it out with my toothbrush in front of the mirror but my gag reflex always stopped me from getting to it. Tonight I just sat on the couch & used my index finger to get the it out (over a centimeter in diameter) by pressing my finger back into my tonsil & rotating my finger until I popped it out. I rushed to the bathroom hoping to see that I got the whole thing out & I hadn't so I repeated the process to get the rest out while bent over the sink. I've found that I gag less if I'm not trying to see what I am doing & have my mouth open wide enough to move my finger around instead of "opening wide & saying ahhh". Incidentally I popped a couple of small ones out from the other side after my success with the big one. I'm glad to finally have figured out how to pop these nasty things out! By the way, my throat is really sore from all of that wrenching around in it coupled with the irritation from the stone.
I also notice that I get really bothersome large stones during allergy season when I have a constant postnasal drip. Sudafed 12 hour used to keep me dry this time of year but I've been popping out & nursing babies the past couple of years so I can't take my decongestants.

I am 22 years old and I've been getting tonsiloliths (tonsil stones) since I was in 6th grade, so about 10 years. I am getting a tonsillectomy next week to correct this problem, as it is the only way to permanently get rid of them.
A couple warnings for people who suffer from these: They can actually become serious. When I was younger I would get them, they'd stay in my tonsil for about a week and feel annoying, and then they would flush out. However, the past year and a half I have been getting them and the tonsil that the stone is stuck in will swell. This also causes the lymph nodes in my neck to swell as well. I went to the ENT for this, and each time this happened, the stones were actually causing a bad throat infection.
The ENT told me that these will never go away, and every time I get them I'd have to go on antibiotics. Instead of suffering through this every month, I've decided to go ahead and get the tonsillectomy. It may sound drastic, but it's 1-2 weeks of pain/recovery compared to a lifetime of having these things.
Also, I can definitely tell you that you should not be sticking your finger or random objects into your throat to try and get these things out. That could only cause further infection to happen. The most sanitary thing to use is probably the water jets, but they never worked for me.
If you have chronic tonsiloliths, don't ignore them or suffer needlessly. Tonsillectomies can be risky in older people, so talk to your doctor about your options.

Unfortunately I have become a victim of tonsil stones. This sounds bizzare, but I have found a way to get them out. First, I have a flashlisht that is extremely bright, that has a long flexible neck on it, that I set next to my sink and aim it towards my throat. I then use(this is where it gets weird) a popsicle stick to hold my tongue down, if I need to reach them in a common corner in the lower part of my throat. I then use a earwax pick, my dad is a dr and received these as samples, they are Bionix and came in a colorful pack of various shapes and sizes. I use the sky blue colored one. I don't know if these are readily available to the average joe. You must be very careful, you will perfect this if you do it often enough and will learn how to get these out very easily. This is pretty nasty, but I had a pain in the back corner in the roof of my mouth. I put my finger in my mouth and pushed in the corner and revealed another spot for these to grow. I have several pockets in my mouth, that these grow, usually only one at a time. I had strep throat hundreds of times as a small child and my parents debated on taking my tonsils out, I don't know if this would have helped anything. I also have a lot of drainage in my throat which contributes to the tonsil stones as well. I know this sounds weird, but I am able to pop them right out when I feel them come on. Good luck

I have been getting tonsil stones on and off for about 6 years. I recently had a particually bad few weeks after moving out of my parents house and into a new apartment. I started getting stones on an almost daily basis rather than ocassionaly as before. I have managed to reduce the problem after realising what had changed in my diet. Firstly I found that I was rarely eating fruit anymore. Also I was eating much more bread, especially toast in the morning. About an hour after leaving the house in the morning I would feel a nasty taste in my mouth and when I got home, after a bit of digging the stones would appear. Now I scrub my tongue every morning and only eat fruit for breakfast. Believe it or not that has almost completely solved the problem for me. I have only suffered mildly from these stones so i'm sure this will not be a cure for most people. Mild sufferers like me might find this helpful.

They're most common with people who have larger crevices in their tonsils. I finally dislodged a rather large one a few hours ago - it was in an awkward place and I've been suffering with it for a week.
I used the round end of a bobby pin... I know it may sound odd but it worked, and I tried everything ( from a straw which made me bleed, to a tootbrush and my finger which only made me gag) I got it out with the bobby pin almost instantly.

I had my tonsils removed on Feb 1st. I suffered from tonsil stones and very large crypts in my tonsils for a bout a year.
I could use my fingers to get most of the stones out but sometimes I would use a bent paper clip which didn't work to well. My Dr. ask what I used to get them out with out of curiosity. He said, " I probably shouldn't tell you this but, I knew a lady who used the end of a potato peeler to dig the stones out." I thought, boy that would have worked better then what I used to try and get them out. A week later I would be getting them out anyways.
It's been a painful recovery no doubt, but weal worth not to have to deal with those little disgusting stones anymore!

The only thing I have found that works to eliminate these is nasal irrigation (sinus rinsing). I started doing this last year to help with allergy symptoms and to my surprise it completely cleared up the tonsil stone problem that I had for years. Seems way too simple to be true. I'm curious to know if it works for others. I mentioned this on another forum and it seemed to be almost entirely ignored for some reason. Guess the thought of squirting saline up your nose sounds too unpleasant. But it sure beats those stinky things. I actually find it quite pleasant (refreshing) and it's now the first thing I do EVERY morning. Please try it and report back.

Ive been geting these gross things for about 6 months now..i get the randomly though and always just thought they were food. Anyways i saw someone tip to try the closed end of the bobby bin...worked great! i got it in the first try without gagging! I had tried my finger, gargling, toothpick, sucking it with a syringe (minus the needle) and nothing worked.
So give a bobby pin a try. Also, after all the wonderful info i found on this site i feel so much better knowing im not crazy and other people get thse....but im going to start gargling daily, using a toungue scraper and nasal drops. I am a mouth breather so im betting this has a lot to do with it. Best of luck everyone
