Hey guys 23 year old female here, had my tonsils removed 5 days ago. From the very beginning my dr told me it was going to be the worst pain in my life. I haven't really felt it except on the 3rd day, I couldn't even cry because that even hurt. I was off percocets after that because it made me extremely sick. The next day I had a massive headache and couldn't hold food down. Thankfully today I'm better and I've been able to eat some Mac and cheese. I did notice a piece of the scab come off and now it burns like hell. Hopefully this pain is worth it in the end!!

Hey! First of all i'm glad you're feeling better. I removed mine on Friday and i'm just a year older than you. I was told the pain correlates to age as well and the older you are, the painful the journey would be!

Yay I am so glad there is an active post! All the other ones I have religiously been reading for the past week are from years ago! Thank god for all of these posts though as I am on day 8 and have done nothing but look up information since I had it done. Like many people have said, yes people say it's painful but not like this!! I ended up in hospital on days 4 and 5 as had a bleed and have an infection. Was sent home with Morphine (which only just about takes the edge off the pain) and antibiotics! It hurts to eat, drink, talk and even breathe! I feel like I am swallowing glass :( and can honestly say I have had enough now! I am praying that tomorrow I will turn a corner and start to feel as though I am nearly recovered! It looks as though these scabs are thinning and possibly even coming off (I can't open my mouth wide enough without it hurting to take a look).. Speedy recovery to you all!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've to go back to the ER! Try to mix up iced water with an isotonic drink. I tried eating a beef patty (bit by bit) and my throat wouldn't allow it. I switched to glutinous chicken rice and i managed to down those a little before my night medications and sleep.

Although the pain can be constant, please get some semi-solid food like porridge to eat. So far from what i've read, only a handful had severe pains after 14 days. I hope you turn a corner by day 10!

I'm on day 7 and on antibiotics as well. So far the pain has been quite kind to me.

Here in the UK they tell us to eat harder foods like toast etc but what a struggle that has been! I have pretty much lived on soup, mashed potato with gravy, ice lollies etc and it's kinda like you have to break through the pain barrier and then it stops hurting! We have a mouthwash called Difflam too, that's been pretty helpful! I woke up this morning and had a dry throat which of course hurt for me to swallow, but as the day has gone on the pain is not really there! Shall see how we go from here! Will definitely give the porridge a try especially as the weather is cold and horrid at the moment as well!
You are so lucky to not be struggling with the pain as much! I just don't think I have much of a pain threshold! It hit the peak on the day I went to hospital. I was sitting in the waiting room sobbing from the pain it was horrendous! Don't ever want to feel pain like that again! Lol
I hope this recovery continues to be a kind journey for you!!

So i've heard! The soonest you could down solid foods, the faster your recovery would be. Right now, even plain breads are a no go for me so i feel you! Try to add some minced chicken or fish into your soup as you need nutrients. That's what i do and i can see the difference in a way that i can move about and not feel lethargic albeit the pain and 'stinging" feels. I tried porridge for the first day and on the second day, i felt like throwing up to the smell of the porridge itself so i guess appetite wise it's really subjective.

Yep! I was given Difflam gargles and lozenges as well! Seems like Singapore's prescription meds are pretty much the same as there. Those gargles do a hell of a job to numb the scabbed areas for a good 1-2 hours. Right now i get the pains when i tried to channel a sound from my vocal cords. Sounds crazy but thats why i couldnt speak for about 8 days now.

Do update how you're doing in the coming days! I hope the recovery goes well for you too! :)

I will be sure to let you know how I am doing in a few days! Today was so much better for me. Only real complaint is that my tongue hurts a lot! It feels like it does after you bite it. Do you have any problems with your tongue? I hope you are feeling well today

That's great you're feeling better :) My tongue did hurt in days 3-4 but it was the back half of my tongue that I believe was somewhat swollen. It felt like it was touching the roof of my mouth! Yesterday I had a mini ulcer at the side of my tongue but it went away today. Did you do something about the pain on your tongue then? I just hope you've been taking regular meals despite all the pain. How is the mobility of your mouth? Are you able to open/close it with ease?

It's 3:34PM here and I got up a few minutes ago. Seems like I'm able to sleep peacefully for the couple of days without any discomfort in the throat. But it still somewhat hurts mildly when I swallow stuffs so I guess it's somewhat positive. I'll try to get some breads down today if I can.

Well I'm 15, I had my toncils removed last Tuesday :) I was terrified and the hospital had to put drugs in me to make me high to calm me down! And boy did they work I cannot even remember the recovery room, well anyway I woke up after the opiration with a tiny bit of pain I managed to eat a bit of mash patotos and some soup, don't expect to be in your own room your not! Your in a room with other people that are having the same operation, anyway after a few hours they let me home. I still had some pain, I couldn't open my mouth, that night I woke up in the morning in pain because of obviously not swollowing during sleep time :3 I took my iburephen and my paracitamol, God does it take the pain away. I'm on day 5 now and I dread waking up in the Morning because of the pain, but after that it's amazing I can eat and everything doesn't even hurt!!!! I should be at school that's how bored I am! If you need them out have them out! It will be the best choice :) enjoy! And have a speedy recovery like I have!

It's good that you removed it in your teens. Us adults have a rougher journey though :(

Good to know you're doing great! :)

Hi! I'm 14 and just had my tonsils removed on Dec 2 the first two days were bad.. but the worst is my uvula swelled and was almost twice the size.. has that happened to anyone else? I also got a bad rough cough the day after surgery. it was terrible I'm now on Day 5 (counting surgery) and I've only taken my pain meds once today because the pains not bad right now.. is it going to get worse from here?

Hey good day! From reading the experiences of others, swelling of the uvula seems very common. Try not to cough, sneeze and yawn for the first week because they will hurt if you do so. The pain will peak between day 4-8 so just follow your doctor's instructions on the pain meds. Be strong and get well soon!

I'm 24 too. Day 8. The pain is way worse than expected. I too was sick from the pain meds. I stopped taking them for a day, but the pain was out of control. I ended up taking 5ml every couple hours rather than 15 every 5 hours. This along with acetaminophen seemed to help. Still can't really drink Gatorade, but I can do soft food :). Things are getting better since I stopped taking my full dose of liquid hydrocodone.
