Hi, I got my tonsils and adenoids out on April 23rd it is now April 27th. I have discovered that the ent's say not to take ibuprofen and Advil because it will make you bleed more. But Tylenol just does not work for me . I take Advil liqua gel minis believe it or not they go down really smooth. I basically feel my scabs getting thicker everyday. I mainly drink water and eat ice cream and ice pops. Very cold things help a lot but I can't eat soft diet food without something cold accompanying it . My cough Is regular every hour or so I have a coughing fit . And I can't really speak with open vowels without minor pain. Things like, yawning, coughing, and sneezing also comes with minor pain. If you have any tips hmu.

So, I’m on day 8 of recovery and I woke up at like 3 am coughing really bad. I went to the bathroom and I was bleeding a little bit. Should I be worried? I think I might have just coughed a scab off too early? I haven’t seen any blood in my mouth since and the bleeding didn’t cause any more pain or swelling

I'm a 28 yo male and it's been 8 days including the day of surgery since I had the chop.
I feel sorry for everyone else here because my recovery has been so easy. I thought I might share a positive story in case someone is reading this and getting a bit anxious before their surgery.
I got out of my surgery and was immediately handed an icy-pole which I thought was surprisingly easy to eat. Since then, it's just gotten easier and easier. In Aus we stay overnight at the hospital and the nurses woke me to give me pain killers every 4 hours. Ate some porridge for breakfast. The surgeon came to check on me in the morning and warned me of the impending pain, but it just never came, I haven't needed any of the oxycodone I was prescribed. By day 3 I was back to a regular diet, though it was a little sore to swallow, but not as bad as a bout of tonsillitis.
Today I did lose some scabs, and they ended up bleeding quite a lot. I'm talking spitting mouthfuls of blood for 20 minutes...but then it stopped. It didn't hurt or anything, just a bit gross and worrisome.
I think the key for me was staying hydrated. When I wake in the morning it is noticeably more sore and a bit of an ear ache, but a couple of glasses of water and some over the counter paracetamol takes edge off.

Hi, I'm 13 and I'm on day 10. Scabs are almost fully gone and I've had no bleeding. I was able to eat soft ramen noodles, applesauce, ice, chicken soup, and even two slices of bread today. Essentially, don't read the horror stories. Sure bleeding may happen but the more anxious you are the worse you'll feel.

44y/o female. I am no stranger to surgery. I thought having my deviated septum repaired was the worse ever in terms of paranoia...No! This is!!!
I had a Uvulapalatopharyngoplasty performed YESTERDAY 07/19/2018. Basically, I had my tonsils, uvula, and roof of my mouth trimmed. I am reading up on what to expect from people who actually have gone through this.
I am currently experiencing the irritation of my stitches in the back of my mouth. The pain so far hasn't kicked in. I am taking liquid Children's Tylenol and Liquid Children's Motrin. The prickly is bothering the h.e. double hockey sticks out of me! I triggers my gag reflex and I throw up!
I am reading that pain will get worse. Why? I understand the rawness when the scabs come off but why will it get worse? I have had 2 out of 4 kids without anesthesia but this I tremble about. I can't sleep the days away cause I need to swallow. And I can't make the days go faster. I refuse to talk of chew because that makes me agitate the prickly stitches. I welcome the weight loss but scared to eat, even though I see that helps in many cases.
Is there anyone out there who can relate and offer advice? I'm a nervous Wreck!!!!!!!!!

Hello, I had my tonsils removed four days ago. Straight after the surgery I fainted (due to the general anaesthetic) and the pain was really severe but seemed to ease with painkillers. It is definitely true that the pain is worse in the mornings I am waking up during the early hours of the morning I'm in that much pain but as the day progresses it tends to get better. After surgery I tried to eat dark chocolate ice cream, which was a big mistake as it causes so much mucus I felt as if I was choking. I was advised to eat 'scratchy' foods as this clears the mucus at the back of the throat, which is what causes infection. I have been eating my normal diet i.e. toast, eggs, noodles, bagels, spinach pizza and as long as I: leave it to cool, cut the food into very small pieces and eat very slowly I seem to be fine - as I am taking diclofenac I have to be able to eat with the tablets (so haven't lost any weight at all thus far). I formed scabs at the back of my throat on day two and they don't seem to have come off yet. I was told that you just swallow the scabs with the food you eat and if experience any bleeding go straight to A&E. For the first three days I have been using ice packs to ease the pain and inflammation but today (day four) I have switched to heat packs to increase the blood flow to the area to encourage repair. Try to stay hydrated and prop your head up in bed to decrease risk of bleeding. Take the painkillers at regular intervals even if you don't feel the pain I would advise to take them anyway. Good luck, it will be so worth it in the long term!

Today is day 9 in my recovery from my tonsillectomy. I haven’t ate or drank hardly anything since before I had the surgery (Of course this is not recommended).
Yesterday I just so happened to finally get enough food (chicken broth and pudding *eyes rolling*) down that I was able to take my Percoset for the first time since day 4. I went to bed feeling fantastic.
So 1:30am rolls around and I wake up to a strange feeling. What I was feeling I would describe as a lot of drainage from your nose just seeping down your throat. I thought to myself, “I wonder if my scabs just fell off”. So naturally, I got out of bed and went to the bathroom, used my phone as a flashlight and shined that puppy into the back of my throat so I could see what was going on. Sure enough, I lost the whole right side of scab all in one shot. I gargled with some ice water and off to bed I went.
Throughout the night, I proceeded to wake up 4 more times to this same occurance, only with each time it got worse. I was one of those people who unfortunately coughed up those scabs, and mine weren’t white. Mine were dark red and I was coughing up and spitting out so much blood it looked like a crime scene. On top of that, my right side of my throat had a huge lump (? Not sure what this was exactly) prior to the scabs falling off. It almost looked like a very small bouncy ball right where my tonsil was supposed to be located. Strangely enough, I only had this on the right side of my throat and that has been what’s caused me the most pain of this recovery so far. Well once I lost the scab on that little ball, it looked like a bloody tonsil was just annihilated and it was just hanging on for dear life to my throat, but also resting itself ever so comfortably (*eye rolling again*) on the back of my tongue. This really frightened me.
Once I got the mess cleaned up, I called my doctors office and got the on call doctor, which just so happened to be the surgeon who did my tonsillectomy. He told me to go to the ER if the bleeding didn’t subside. Which it didn’t, so of course I headed on in.
I got to the ER at about 3:30 and checked in. They hooked me up on IV, did some blood work and gave me some zofran. That “hanging bouncy ball tonsil” makes me constantly gag and makes me super nauseous. The doc came in and checked me out. He said that it was normal, and even though it doesn’t happen with many people, it’ll be fine and fall off when it’s ready. (You mean I have to let this thing dangle in my throat until it’s ready to fall off? Yuck.) I was discharged from the ER at 6am. My boyfriend drove me home. Poor him, it’s his 25th birthday and he gets to start it off taking me to the ER and then going straight to work once we got home. What a trooper!
As he heads off to work, I snuggle myself into bed and fall into a deep sleep. I wake up around noon to find my throat hurting again. I look in the mirror with my handy phone flashlight and what do I see? My whole throat is covered in white scabs again, and the hanging bouncy ball tonsil has cuddled its way back into the back of my throat where it first resided, also covered in white scab again. Now I’m sitting here on the couch, 5:45pm just imagining eating a grilled cheese but knowing that it must wait at least another week.
I’m still extremely confused why my whole throat is covered in scabs again, but I guess
I’ll just have to wait and see the outcome. I don’t have a post-op visit with my surgeon until day 21. Seems a bit far out, considering I’m only day 9 today. But crossing my fingers that the bouncy ball will at least go away.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to share my experience for everyone still googling, to see if what is happening is normal.
I am 27, day 8 post op.
Most of my diet has been mashed potatoes, Easy Mac, Jello, popsicles and a few protein shakes.
Fruit smoothies are acidic and burn! Protein shakes with almond milk aren't bad.
Day 4: woke up in a lot of pain and nauseous! tried so hard not to get sick. I was terrified I would start bleeding. I puked but no blood. Use the anti nausea medication. Don't wait until you're nauseous it'll be too late!
Day 5 I had waffles, soft with syrup so it was not dry or scratchy. Pain wasn't too bad taking Tylenol Extra strength every 5 hours.
Day 6 I had salmon and butter noodles. It hurt but I needed something that wasn't mushy. Pain was worse that day.
Day 7 glazed donut- it was soft and didnt hurt much but not good go digestive system.
also had some eggs for lunch- over easy. Pain has radiated to my ears. every time I drink something other than water it feels like a hote straight to my inner ear.
Day 8- soup and noodles from Pei Wei. A lot more talking today than all week and I was in a lot of pain! Soggy cereal for dinner.

Things that helped: Cool Mist Humidifier!! Run at night on high close to your face. it helped not to dry out my throat when sleeping and I woke up with less pain on the nights I used it.
Sipping Ice water. ALL DAY! it helps numb the pain and get food down.
Chewing gum- helps keep throat wet.

Good luck! its awful but you'll survive
