As of today, I have made it to day 7 since my surgery. I am 29 years old with two toddlers running around. This has been rough!

I originally was told the first four days are the worst then it gets better until when the scabs come off. What I actually experienced was the pain didn't get better. The liquid Hydrocodone was horrible burning throat and making tears fall from trying to swallow. On day 5, I checked with my doctor and she said I could use advil liquigels along with Hydrocodone. I found if you just waited every four hours to take medicine, it was dreadfully painful. So you can take advil liquigel in between to help control pain. I actually set my alarm to wake me up a little before four hour mark so I can get medicine in me. Before I started doing this I would wake up in horrible pain with ears, head, throat, tongue...everything was severe pain! my doctor said it is harder than childbirth and I agree! Good news is that it does get better. I was gagging the night of surgery just to seen that my uvula was swollen touching my tongue. I looked online and read that was common for other people to experience after this surgery and someone's advice was..whatever you do, don't look at your mouth in mirror. Wish I hadn't. that was disgusting. Now that I am on day 7, I began gagging on something else and tried to spit. Little pieces and blood was coming up. It is time for scabs to come out so I tried to get whatever out that I could. almost looked like a blood clot came up but maybe it was just the scab for one side. I don't know if I already swallowed other scab or if that's going to come up later. I spit some more and rinsed mouth with cold water and didn't see any more blood. Heating pads on ears help so much as well.

also..if you get nauseous easily..I recommend telling anesthesiologist before surgery so they can give you extra medicine to control that. I hardly felt nauseous at all this whole time...no throwing up.

for food..I've been doing jello, applesauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes. the potatoes burned my throat but I rinse it down with water as best I can. I'm still struggling to eat but it is slowly getting better. I made instant gritz tonight and ate the most I've ate all week. I am starving but hopefully I'll be all better in time for Christmas dinner. Wish you all the best and Merry Christmas to all!

forgot to mention...once I was able to swallow the Advil liquigels, I contacted dr and asked for the pill form of Hydrocodone. I've been taking this medicine so much easier than the liquid form! the pills are not as strong but by day 5, I could force myself to swallow the pills instead of dealing with the horrible liquid form that burns the throat!

Applying heat could've caused your tonsils to bleed.

Hi! I just had my tonsils out 5 days ago counting the operation day. My mom had recently had hers our and it didn't seem like she was in as much pain as I'm in. Although I don't have a very high pain tolerance. The first day wasn't to bad although my neck hurts as well as my ears, it feels like I have an ear infection or ear ache. I haven't been eating much, and only drinking water. I can't tell if my scabs are gone yet but I'm leary about them coming out. I just want this to be over already!

I'm on day 6 of having my tonsils out. I'm unable to eat anything, jello like you said hurts to bad. Apple juice, gaterade Powerade, and even Popsicles feel like gasoline going down my throat. So your not alone. The pain is horrible. I ended up going to the e r today for iv fluids I got 2 liters of fluids in a I v and I v pin meds. I came home and was actually able to take a nap! I have been only sleeping 3 hrs or so a day.. The scabs just came off.. Not all of them but 2 huge chunks of them. It happened when I coughed because they were in the way of my uvula. As of now I don't have any extra pain.. It feels More of a relief , let's see how it is when my meds wear off and I'm due for another dose.
Feel better !

Hey Everybody,

I am on day 8 after tonsillectomy and adnoidectomy and I have been in pretty bad shape. The first few days were horrid and pain killers didnt help.. I went to school yesterday and i could barely stand the pain. So, today i stayed home and have been in bed all day. Other than getting up to eat and get drinks.. i have been watching tv in my bedroom not moving a bit. I lost to of the scabs on the toop but still have big scabs in the back that havent been coming off. The scabs falling off really make that particular spot sore. For some reason, my left side is the only one that hurts. My left ear and missing tonsil hole and adnoid hole are sore, too. It seems that i have slowly caught a cold and wake up with a thick coat of mucus in my mouth and a thick coat of mucus in my nose. Its been painful sneezing and yawning. When am I going to get better?? When should i go back to school???

I'm 19 almost 20 and got my tonsils taken out 6 days ago. my pain was not bad at all, I took a generic Percocet in the mornings then switched to Advil & Tylenol switching off between the two. my scabs have partially come off & there is a little pain from that but nothing crazy. I started eating the day I got them out & that has helped a lot. hopefully I'll
be 100 when I go back to school in 2 days. best wishes to everyone else

I am 17/Male and I got both Tonsils and Adenoids taken out about 5 days ago counting Op day. I constantly get tonsil stones and creamy nasal cavity. Always flushed my nose with Neti pot which helped removed bad nose breath. My breath was so bad with the tonsil stones that I was suicidal most of the time. I kept reading bad breath cure forums and usually spent my paycheck on stupid products that don't even help suppress my halitosis. So I finally opted for a tonsillectomy. I was not aware of the adenoids being removed as the surgeon just let me know when I woke up. I am extremely happy because now I can breath through my nose( I didn't know there could be so much air surging through there). My experience has been manageable so far with pain. It hurts real bad to wake up with piercing nails in your throat and icky dry mouth. I was given an option with liquid or pill medication. In which case I chose the pill because of all the reviews that it had bad burning. To be honest I would take pain over side effects of the Percocet 7.5-325, it made me so dizzy and nauseous that I felt like I was gonna be taken away from the earth. Also made me have really upset stomach in which I throw up a couple times a day and just swallow it back because j needed the food I was eating. Day 1-3 were pretty easy. The Percocet made me so drowsy that just slept through the days. Day 3 was the worst, pain increased to the ear until I took the medicine in which I was so reluctant to because it made me so sick. As far as food goes I been eating rice with side dishes and lots of soup. Ice cream was real nice the first 2 days but it made the scabs thicker and made them taste like DEATH. Like omg it is terrible. My breath smells like pee and taste like poop at the same time( also contributed to my drowsiness). I really try to drink as much water as possible. I know, it hurts so so bad when you swallow, but it's life we will get through it. I just close my eyes press my throat and ride through the pain that generally really only last for a sec after swallowing. It is really important to try to breath through nose to prevent dry mouth. If you want to get the surgery done, I sugegest that you will decide from the bottom of your heart. It's iether your decided 100% or don't do it because it is terrible. Goodluck to all the patients undergoing this and soon to be. There is a calm after the storm
