I have been a tonsil-stone sufferer for over twenty years and have done some bizarre things to get rid of them, but they keep returning. I gargled with peroxide, brushed my tongue and finally resorted to a bi-weekly tonsil cleaning with a dental pick that had been smoothed down. It took some time to perfect my method, but now I have almost perfect control of my gag reflex and can get the often pea-sized stones out of my tonsils. I have to do this regularly or my breath starts to get funky. I tried the sinus drops and oxyhenation methos, but brushing my tongue twice daily and using my pick have been the only reliable ways to deter the growth of those stinky things. Having bad sinuses and allergies is the root cause, in my estimation, as is being a side sleeper. My right tonsil is the one most likely to get tonsil stones.

I also have "tonsil stones". As a teenager I would have tonsilitis quit often. I always have drainage in the back of my throat, and am constantly trying to swallow it so as not to clear my throat aloud. About 3 years ago I started coughing out these tonsil stones afte brushing my teeth. I thought it might be because I quit smoking. But they have only became worse with time. I can see 2-3 on my tonsils at a time, and often can smell the odor on my breath myself. I wonder if this problem has something to do with the constant drainage, as many of you have mentioned. I believe I read somewhere that your white blood cells are incasing the debri in those crypts and then they become the hard yellow balls. Somebody help!

Hey,

From what I can remember this started for me when I was in about the 9th grade I would say, I'm now a freshman in college and can say that it has gotten significantly better. The things that I've done to improve it are literally force myself not to hack anything up even if that means about to throw up or gagging through it and as i did that more and more I noticed that it got easier and easier and the symptoms less and less. My method for this was alternating breathing between the mouth and the nose until i could finally have relief from the constant hacking. The next method of things to do is definantly try what someone had posted earlier which is to drink water every time you feel like clearing your throat and within three weeks the symptoms should be gone. I also have been taking a mushroom that cleans the body of toxins and I have noticed my symptoms have gotten a lot less worse from that. My new goal is to completely alleviate them when I exercise and after I eat a very large meal. I will keep in touch and urge others to try what I have done, it will get better trust me..

I realize this is an old post. For what it's worth, if you clear your throat a lot, you probably have post nasal drip. If you have post nasal drip and crytic tonsils, the mucous from the drip is most likely getting into the crypts and contributing to the tonsillitis (the horrible stuff in your tonsil).

This is kind of gross, but I clean my tonsils with a water pic when I can. Sometimes there's nothing, sometimes there are tonsillitis, and sometimes there's just mucous from the post-nasal-drip. I don't think the drip is inside the crypt, it may be lodged behind the tonsil but since I can't see it, I don't know.

In any case, this is the relationship between throat-clearing and formation of tonsillitis, at least in most cases.

Yup this is all too familiar to me. I gave up going to the Dr. a few years ago. nobody has an answer. I get the stones, I have constant allergies, throat clearing, clear flem.

It drives me nuts! I believe it's from the allergies. I travel a lot. Last year I spent two months in SE ASIA. I could breath, no allergies, no throat clearing. After this I leave for NZ and Australia and BOOM the allergies start right up again. I live in Canada. I think something must grow closer to the poles that causes this problem saying as how I don`t get allergies in tropical areas. I also spent a month in Costa Rica the year before with no problems. Again, I came home from that trip and BOOM right back to this nonsense.

I think I am destine to live in the tropics.

I never thought I would find myself responding to one of these ads. I am 41 years old and have been experiencing SEVERE halitosis since age 16. I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with different dentist and doctors and no one has been able to find a cure. I recently researched tonsil stones on line and think this may be my problem. I found a doctor in New York who performs laser surgery to permanently remove this stones. The problem is, he charges $3,300. True I feel it is worth the money, but do not have it. I feel like one of the other writing...I hate talking to people because all they see is my bad breath. There is not a product out there that I haven’t bought...nothing and I do mean NOTHING has worked for me. I was fired from a job because my mouth was so foul. I brush my teeth more than the average person does, I practice good hygiene, and my boyfriend does not like kissing me (who can blame him). I am depressed ALL the time because of this. It has made me loose ALL self-esteem. I have even written to several talk shows asking for help...they send letters back stating they are not interested at this time....SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME

You could brush your teeth 24/7 and it wouldn't help. It's food and/or bacteria getting caught in you tonsils. Clean teeth can't help your tonsils. If you have larger tonsils you could probably get the stones out yourself but if you can't even see your tonsils then you'll probably have to see a doctor. Dentists are not the answer! again they deal with the teeth which are not the problem. Most doctors will try antibiotics though i haven't meet or heard of one person who that worked for. What you need is an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Doctor. They will be able to give you your options. Most likely with SKYBRO's case because it hinders your day to day life will offer surgery. That's a tonsillectomy. I had tonsil stones and told my ENT I wanted them gone, so I got a tonsillectomy and no more bad breath. At 41 they might want you to reconsider because thats only a routine surgery for children when i got mine out I was 17 and the doctor asked if I was sure because the older you are the more painful.
Hope i could help you not be tricked by dentists.

I first noticed these when I was about 7 or maybe 8 years old. When I was sixteen, I had my tonsils removed.

I am now 26 and the only time I ever noticed a difference in breath or the coughing up of these stones is when I went from smoking regular cigarettes to ALL NATURAL cigarettes (American Spirit brand) and they along with the bad breath stopped within two days... but with rising taxes I had to change back to a non-natural cigarette and they returned almost immediately.

Also, my favorite hobby is wilderness survival, and I have never experienced any of it, while in the wilderness, as I never take my cigarettes and I stay out there for anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months. I never have a problem out there, otherwise I cough the stones up once or twice every 1-3 days.

I have no idea how many of you are surrounded by smoke or smokers, but I think that has a lot to do with it... also, I never knew it had a name until an hour ago when I found this website, due to my father referring to it as cauliflower... He thought it was my bronchial tubes falling apart... what a relief...

However, most of the responses here discuss the things coming from the holes in the back of their throats... and only one suggested they come from deeper in the throat... It does in fact feel as though they are coming from deeper down for me as well... so could it be something entirely different?

Hi all, I have the same problem of this smelly chunks from my throat. Once, my wife helped me expressed one, as big as a green pea, and it's revoltingly smelly, I spewed it out. It came out from a pocket on the left side of my throat. Immediately after that, I went to the sink and tried to feel my throat with my left index finger, I smelled my finger and uggh, stinky. I poked the right side of my throat with my right index finger, it's not smelly. Ahahh! from that moment on, I knew where my throat pocket is located. This is important in preventing any recurrence of that chunk.
Now, everytime I brush my teeth, I do my throat cleaning as well. Here's what I do, I take a jigger of listerine, dipped my left index finger in it, and massage my left throat. I do the dipping and massaging 3 times on my left throat and once on my right throat. I smell my finger every after massage so that I know the smell is not there anymore. I just used my finger because I can control the pressure I'm using and no need to be in front of the mirror to do this. It's like my finger have an eye on where to rub. I just make sure my hands are clean when I do this of course.
I noticed that if I missed doing this just for a day, my left throat will start to smell like a stale saliva, like a morning breath. By my right throat is not.
I therefore conclude that the pocket will stock up saliva/mucus and harden over time, and should be expressed everyday to prevent the build up.
I've been doing this for 3 months now and no chunks and smelly breath for me ever since. :D
Another thing I noticed is I didn't get sore throat ever since, which I get regularly before after talking too much or singing karaoke. It could be because I don't have that rotting thing in my throat which is breeding bacteria I'm sure. HOPE THIS HELPED YOU.

These things are horrible and drive me nuts.
I coughed up a few little ones this morning even though I had a lengthy look in my mouth last night with a flash light.
I just dont know where they are coming from.

Embarrasingly, im still not 100 per cent certain exactly where my tonsils are, lol.
When i type in 'tonsils' in google images, my mouth looks so different.
The pictures show the tonsils are big 'bag' looking things near teh back of the throat. I dont seem to have those, although i've never had my tonsils removed.

my tonsils?
