Hi, I have a question. Can type 2 diabetes be reversed? Does science have anything to say about this? I anyone familiar with the scientific literature and what might be available as a cure for this condition? I've had diabetes type 2 for 5 years now and I'm still struggling with my diet and exercise. I'm getting better at it but it is still difficult. Since this is a common problem, it seems to me that research is doing something about it. Can anyone tell me about this and in layman's terms so I can understand? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Hello, Research is trying a number of possibilities. Part of which involves gene therapies that include insulin gene therapy which would replace injections with monthly therapies. Nevertheless, these therapies can be complicated and not perfected yet. Clearly, diet and exercise don't work for everyone and probably because they are diagnosed at a later time. Early diagnosis is best. As, you know your pancreas is not working properly. This leaves too much sugar in your bloodstream and of course it acts not unlike a poison. If left untreated, this has many repercussions for other areas of the body including the nervous system, cardiovascular system and lungs.
Currently, there are studies here in the US and the UK that are working with a type 2 cure diet that has the ability to remove glucose and allowing for normal blood glucose levels to be restored. If you are really over weight, bariatric surgery has been demonstrated to bring blood glucose levels back to normal. Nevertheless, losing weight is critical in combating diabetes type 2. If you're not heavy enough for beriatric surgery, keep trying to lose the weight and that should get you closer to normal blood glucose levels. Research is on going. It's just a matter of time before there will be a break through that can be used by the general public. Hand in there.
