X, can you give us a status update on your journey using Metronidazole? Also describe your leaking problem to us since I know not everyone seems to be the same. When do you get it? Does Metamucil help? Any particular foods?
And Carlos, don't try garlic or cranberry, they are a waste of money. We have all tried it. Go straight to metamucil until someone finds an absolute cure.

Hey everyone,I just wanted to update you. I had no luck with any of the fibre stuff or the diet stuff, but I have been given a new medicine in Japan called Iribow . This sounds like one of those sh*t adverts, but seriously i only go to the loo once a day now, and i control when i go. the movement is always solid. it seems to have stopped the leakage and i now dont have to change my underwear during the day. It's given me back a large portion of my life and general confidence. I hope you're able to find either the same thing or something with the same properties in the US, etc.

I recommend asking your doctors if they can get you something similar, if you have continually badly formed stools and anxiety problems. It's not a perfect drug, I can't really drink caffeine or milk because they over-ride it. but it's a small price to pay. I still have other symptoms and I've found i have a dermatological condition that's made worse by washing powder! I have also been taking a Japanese good bacteria tablet called BM something which may have helped neutralize harmful bacteria in my stomach ...Anyway, i hope this post helps one or some of you in your search for a cure, I had acute leakage for over a year and it's now stopped. best regards.Eminent dude

Irribow drug is available worldwide, so ask your doctors if you think it could help. It's not an over the counter thing. peace. dude

I think your onto something. My symptoms and onset sounds the same as everyone else... but have been way more gassy than usual too... I took an anti-parasite med which was to kill all biotics in the digestive system and was to follow up with probiotics... perhaps my probiotics were bad... that maybe why yogurt has been suggested... Im gonna try more probiotics and yogurt and cranberry juice... cranberry juice adjust the bodies ph level... garlic helps fight infection or boost immune system... All good natural cures that wont hurt anything to try. I encourage someone else try this too and post to this thread... btw I use DESITIN to help with the burn and itch, diaper rash cream, works way better than PREP H. I can stand the moistness way better than the burn and itch. Good luck all!

I feel compelled to write something here because this forum has actually given me a new hope regarding a problem that has been plaguing me for years. I used to be a very athletic person, very physically confident, and this condition has definitely taken an axe to that, so I commiserate with everyone on here. I do have some positive suggestions for the people on here, because recently my problem has become LESS BAD. Not that it has gone away completely, but it IS getting better.
SHORT SUMMARY...
try:
garlic (2 cloves a day, on an empty stomach for no more than 5 days in a row. Warning, this is BRUTAL. EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE. But garlic is some kind of mild antibiotic, and it works to kill some of the bad bacteria in your intestines that is causing this problem). cranberry juice (doesn't do a whole lot of good, but worth a shot. IT HAS TO BE UNSWEETENED AND HAVE ALMOST NO SUGAR. ALSO BRUTAL IN TASTE, but less painful than garlic).stop eating sugar (this includes NO FRUIT OR FRUIT JUICE, NO DAIRY SUGARS and NO VINEGAR) as much as possible. (this works to starve out bacteria in your gut. I cannot speak for the beneficial effects of apple cider vinegar as I have not tried this). Try to keep sugar down to less than 10 grams a day for a few months (including any residual sugar in the unsweetened cranberry juice).lastly and perhaps the most important, I have been taking multiple doses of the following probiotics EVERY DAY:saccharomyces boulardii
and also a combination of multiple types of probiotic that's offered by the jarrow company, I think it's called "ultra jarrow-dophilus" and I use the type that has 60 Billion bacterial agents per capsule.
For relief: take a lot of psyllium, or metamucil (but that has sugar in it! better to find something sweetened artificially or unsweetened). Metamucil is only temporary relief, not fixing the problem. CALCIUM is also beneficial in this way, it constipates you.
BOTTOM LINE:
none of these suggestions can hurt you. they are also much cheaper than seeing a gastroenterologist who might not be able to help you. my problem is slowly going away since trying this. I should also add that I have been suffering from this since I was 24 and now I'm 29, so this is a major event in my life, and the relief is worth all of the pain involved in the treatment.
I have no seen 4 different gastroenterologists, taken a great many expensive medical tests (that are horribly unpleasant), seen two different physical therapists and been to the emergency room twice due to this problem. What I believe happened to me, looking back at my history, is that I was given antibiotics for too long after a bout of cellulitis, and I wasn't explicitly instructed to take probiotics along with these antibiotics (I was on STRONG antibiotics for a month after an infection crawled up my leg when I was 23). I remember have weird bowels afterwards, but I just dismissed them. Over the years, this problem became worse and worse. It started with a few skidmarks after some cups of coffee. Then horrible itching. Then irritation and bleeding.
A few years ago, there was a major turning point in my story. It was also horrible, but revealing somewhat. I ate some strawberries that I had left out of the fridge for too long (at least I THINK this is what caused it) and wound up spending a week in the emergency room for uncontrollable diarrhea. As gross as this sounds, it was not funny at the time. I could not keep food down for a week, and was really fearing for my life (this was seriously scary). I went to one of the best ERs in the US, and no doctor could figure out what it was that was causing the issue. OF COURSE, I tested negative for C-diff. But what I tested positive for was Blastocystis hominis. Gerontologists do not know what the deal is with blastocystis hominis. They know that it occurs in healthy people, and also people who have diarrhea. When they see it, and the person has diarrhea, they often treat it with antibiotics. It's possible that it is a common companion to another bacterial parasite that is not yet fully understood or known about.
well one doctor took a stab in the dark, gave me some antibiotics, and AS IF BY MAGIC, the diarrhea disappeared instantly. This is after a week of injections, and pills, all of which did not work at all. Unfortunately, the leaky problem was worse.
I continued to see gastroenterologists to cure the leaking. No one found anything. No crohn's. no fistulas, nothing! no problems in my manometry exam. Regardless, the doctors suggested that I might have pelvic floor disfunction, so they sent me to MULTIPLE physical therapists (I also had biofeedback therapy). Eventually the last physical therapist dismissed me (she was excellent), telling me candidly that my problem was not muscular.
the ONLY THING that has helped my problem are the solutions I've listed above. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which one is helping, something in there is helping.
I should cap this off by saying that I am a total health freak, I have an excellent expensive organic diet, and I haven't even had a cold in 2 and a half years. I am otherwise VERY healthy. my large intestine might as well be in a different universe from the rest of my body.
what has changed since I've started this sugar free, garlic-charged experiment?:I'm by and large no longer incontinent (at least not in the same way) after I use the bathroom (big big change). If I am incontinent, it is not enough even to cause a significant streakmark. I can tell though, that it will take some time for this to fully resolve itself. It is not all better. My stools are still softer than the normal person's, and they still have that faint mucusy smell. I don't get the clear discharge anymore after eating hot peppers or tomatoes! (that's awesome).
alright hope this helps

Update: While the Metro helped it was not a total cure. The second attempt at Metro really didn't have the same effect but perhaps due to the fact I was taking another antibiotic as well. But, it is in fact much better than before.
Here are some facts I discovered while reading and also put together:
1) Condition seems to have originated after a hospital visit for many.
2) Anxiety is present in many.
3) Antibiotic's is too general as all of us have taken some and many people that have, have no symptoms.
So, I have a few things to throw in the works here:
A) Nerve related - How many of you have back and/or spine problems?
B) How many males have had tightness / tenderness in the groin area between Scrotum and anus? Maybe even diagnosed as Prostitus? Uncomfortable to sit?
It is my belief that this condition is nerve related. It would explain the indifferance to age or fitness. It could in fact be something that may be physical or viral. Either way, no one seems to have an answer or we wouldn't be here searching for an answer.
Maybe it's not all about bacteria like we think but in fact more so related to the nervous system in some way. If this is the case, it will be a long way out for a cure or proper identification.

probiotics have seemed to help, within a day things seem stop. I am pleased with the result. It did relapse briefly but I think it is a big part of a solution.

#1, not necessarily for me, but 2 and 3 and A and B, absolutely. I've had groin tightness since 2004, and then this problem started its early stages in 2010. You may be on to something with the nervous system, but I'm not sure what practical solutions we're likely to get anytime soon.
In the meantime, I had been told last year that I had bad internal hemorrhoids, so this year I finally went to a colorectal surgeon for rubber band ligation. He said there were four big clusters of inflamed hemorrhoids, but it would be wise to handle only one at a time. I asked him if it was possible that the inflamed hemorrhoids were blocking some of the stool escaping, causing this problem, and he said yes, it could very well be. I know others have tried this and seen no positive results, but maybe I'm different. I've had three clusters done so far, with one to go in a few weeks. I'll let you know. If this doesn't work, I'm not sure what I'll do.

update:I went to the hospital after another gastro infection recently, this time for CampylobacterI was prescribed Flagyl and Bactrin for a few days, (the doctor's mistake, as that does not help Campylobacter). Then I was put on Azithromycin. This new course of antibiotics GOT RID OF THIS DAMN INCONTINENCE THAT I'VE BEEN SUFFERING FROM FOR FIVE YEARS (as well as the temporary infection). For many people on this forum, YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM AN OCCULT, PARASITIC BACTERIAL INFECTION, IT IS HIDDEN DEEP IN YOUR INTENSTINAL TRACT AND VERY HARD FOR DOCTORS TO CATCH.
the things that help this are:
-the right antibiotic
-probiotics! (to restore the flora)
