Whatever might cause the swelling and numbness, the picture shown on the link to the "answer" doesn't show any of that.  It shows discoloration, but no purple or swelling. So I'm not sure the symptoms my wife is experiencing...purple swelling at the base of one of her fingers and numbness IS Reynaud's Phenomenen.  If it last more than a day or so, probably a trip to the doc

I'm currently experiencing repeated occurrences similar to yours, symptoms as follows: Initial purple bruise develops on back of knuckle on any finger in either hand; this is excruciatingly painful to the touch & my finger goes stuff, numb & unresponsive above the bruise site. If I don't use the hand it goes away in between 10 minutes - several hours. If I persist in using the hand I've had the blood vessel rupture & a starburst of blood radiate from the site of the bruise all over the affected finger, the finger then went an angry purple & swelled to twice the size- this took a good week to recover. That happened November 2013 & since then I have learnt to recognise the signs & have managed to prevent further bursts. Following that episode I saw my GP who diagnosed my condition as 'neurapraxia'; this is part of H.A.V.S. (Hand/ arm vibration syndrome) apparently but I'm not sure the symptoms match exactly but they're similar. I've been a landscaper for the last 20 years so it's not difficult to work out where I've got this from- do you work with your hands? I'm not sure who to see about the condition & management of it, my GP was helpful but specialist advice would be ideal- don't really want to hang up my trowel approaching 40 years old!

I also had sudden pain in the first joint and noticed immediate bruising. I massaged the area until the purple went away even though it hurt and took some aspirin right after. It went away right away. Blood clot??? IDK.

I've had this happen a few times also, only to fingers...no trauma, just an acute starnge sensation and then bruising and swelling.  looked up symptoms and found Achenbach's Syndrome which seems to fit all the parameters...worth checking out...

another sufferer here. Was picking up a small bunch of dry flowers & thought I had been bitten by a bug/spider.  I ran to the sink, (cold water) & then watched the purplish bruise form on the base of the first knuckle near the tip of my ring finger.  *This has only happened once before to a different knuckle. Not sure what to think. No pain unless I press on it.  (first thought was broken vessel but WHY ?!)  'Wondering why no Dr seems to be interested in this or has a thought.

I am a 64 year old female and this is the first time this has happened to me. All of a sudden my left index finger (the pad near the palm) started swelling while I was watering plants. I iced it for a while and then massaged it. The next day, it had turned black, blue and purple and had traveled closer to my finger tip. I feel better having read the experiences people have had with this. I take aspirin daily, but I still thought it might have been some kind of blood clot, but a broken vein seems more likely. Weird!

I woke up with my left ring finger blue and red and bruised on palm side. Why would this happen no injury did I do something to it while sleeping? No pain..little swelling...it's not a clot issue is it? strange....
