Hi. I am 42/Male and I have this same weirdness. i am also a UK born living in US 99% of my life. Anyway, I experienced this pain/swelling on my left hand ring finger a while ago and also had a bruise one time on my big toe....Right now my middle finger on my right hand is swollen and bruised and hurts when I grip, touch or bend it...I remember what I did just before the finger started hurting last night - I was pumping gas at one of those pumps that they removed the piece that lets you lock the trigger. I am definitely going to a different gas station that has the lock from now on !! I think between robbing us all of our cash and now causing me personal injury that the oil companies are just making life difficult. I am also very glad to see these postings. Is it something with British people? We do all have a vitamin C issue (you know with the limes?) - Ha Ha !!

I've had the same problems as you are all describing, but mine are quite painful. I am a healthy 42 year old female. My doctor was concerned about the problem and ran a full cbc and tested for arthritis, which was all normal/negative. He also tested my clotting factor, which was also normal. He tested for lukemia because my glands and spleen are frequently swollen, but that was negative as well. I had a schwannoma under my right arm pit about 7 years ago so the doctor tended to take things seriously. That was a few years ago. Then about a year ago I donated platelets and had a horrible platelet clotting problem. They said it was uncommon but they'd heard of it before.

Anyway, I had to change doctors and found a good one who is looking at the whole picture. She also wants me to take photos of bruises when they happen, as they can heal before I get in to see her. I have some other strange symptoms but she can't tell if they are related or not.

I hope you all take photos as the outbreaks occur, take notes on what was going on and even if you had any alcohol or aspirin the day of or day before. Just keep track of it all because they can't help you figure it out if they don't have the full picture. I'm really hoping that we can all get answers.

I have the same problems. Today for the first time, my finger got really bad. I was at a concert and clapping with my hands over my head and within 30 minutes, my ring finger on my right hand from the second knuckle up, became numb, enlarged and purple. Usually I don't get that, but only an intense sharp pain and I can barely touch that part on my finger and then after the pain goes away some, it feels bruised. I'm usually doing something like grabbing something or picking something up when it happens, but there have been 1 or 2 times when it has happend out of no where.

Today I was very concerned with the numbness and intense swelling and purple color. I was going to go to the hospital, but then it started to get back to normal. However it still is stiff and a little purple and slightly numb. I took pictures so I can go to the Dr. and hopefully they can figure something out. However from the posts so far, I'm not expecting much. :-(

I have had the same problem for as long as I can remember. Probably started when I was about 16. I am now 45 & it is a regular occurance on the left middle finger. I have learned how to suppress it somewhat to reduce the swelling/bruising as much as possible. When it happens there is a very slight itching in the base of the finger & from that point I IMMEDIATLY try to cool it in any way possible. Ice, snow, cold water & I have even tried spraying WD-40 on it to cool it down. It seems the sooner I cool it off, the less severe the after effects. I have noticed that there has been little mention of Gout in the forum. I beleive that my problem is related to Gout simply because I have experimented with my diet quite a bit to see if it would make a difference. When I drink too much beer & eat red meat & foods rich in purines the finger becomes a problem. If I overdo it at a party I can expect the finger to act up within about 2-4 days. I recently was on holidays & drinking almost every night. I was taking vitamin B12 for the hangovers & the problem appeared four times in two weeks. Apparently, B12 causes high levels of urate in the bloodstream (not to mention all the booze). I have not had any alcohol for a week now & there has been no flare ups at all. This may not be the case for everyone but I hope my input helps.

I have been having these bruising episodes on and off for more than 10 years now. About 3 years ago i was diagnosed with sarcoidosis (inflammatory auto-immune disease). I recently told my specialist about this annoying (and painful!) bruising. He told me that it is uncommon (I guess we are special! :-D ), gave it a long name I can't remember and that to help it I should take a Vitamin K supplement (potassium). Still haven't got around to doing this so not sure if the Vit-K makes a difference. I did notice that the bruising disappeared for the couple of years that I had to take steroids (for the sarcoidosis), although he didn't seem to think the disease is related to the bruising. Hope my info helps someone!

It was relieving to read everyone's remarks concerning this great mystery. I live in a northern region of a Canadian province. I am 45 years old and female. I also experience this - the vein bursts in the area of the mid-finger-joint and the swelling is quite prominent. The bruise will often turn the majority of the finger black/blue and takes a few days for the blood to dissipate. It occurs more frequently in the middle finger but is also in the index finger. It also occurs after gripping something tightly and increasing the pressure against the joint area. I am in overall excellent health. I rarely drink alcohol. Don't use drugs, street or medicinal. I don't use herbal remedies. I eat a balanced diet and take a vitamin supplement. I have been also diagnosed with Raynaud's disease and am thinking this seems to be a fairly common element (or cold hands and feet) with many of the people who are contributing to this discussion.

I am relieved to find this site. I was searching for spider bites to try and explain my wrist experiencing the burning, stinging before the bruising that I normally get on my fingers, but I cannot find an actual bite mark. I have had problems with my hands, fingers mostly for years now, but not my wrist until today. My hands are always red. People comment on them constantly. The closest I ever got to a diagnosis was Reynauds Disease. It seems like clotting to me, so I have quit smoking as I'm 43 yrs old and have a little one. I have never had carpal tunnel; and up until recently always had low blood pressure. I had jobs for the past 20 yrs that involved constant typing/computer usage. I haven't had a problem with my feet yet, but wonder if that's next. The bruises usually last a day or two. I really hope doctors start researching this more.

I have this condition. I am English but live in the states. I suffer from varicose veins and have low blood pressure. I first had this happen three years ago. I was just sitting at my desk in the basement with no shoes or sock on, when I felt a terrible pain like a wasp sting. I looked down to see my toe throbbing and then turn black and blue. I found no sign of a bee or spider, but just thought maybe a spider. The same pain occurred again two months ago. I was lifting my garage door and WAM middle finger. Same pain and black and blue bruising. It feels like a sting but now I believe it to be a burst blood vessel. The most recent was two days ago on the ball of my foot under my big toe. Same pain, same bruising. I have just found out recently that I have some heart problems and low blood pressure. I wonder if there is a link. If I find out I will post. I find it odd that so many of us have this, yet no one knows what the hell it is. If I find out first could it be please named after me LOL

count me in! I just had this happen for the second time in two months. the first time was the top joint in the index finger on my right hand and this time was the same finger only the knuckle joint. I am totally baffled. I will mention it to my doctor and see what he says. I am 30 years old female and I also have fibromyalgia. I've wondered if there is a connection there since fibromyalgia is basically a large collection of off symptoms. it's good to see that people have lived with this for years and it doesn't seem to get too problematic - just very odd.

i have had the same thing happen to me & came across this while trying to find out what it is & am also relived to hear it seems pretty common & nothing to worry about. i am 27 and in pretty good health.

the 1st time it happened was about 1 yr ago after i was hitting a speed ball without any type of boxing gloves so thought maybe i hit it funny. the middle finger suddenly started swelling up & went numb & then bruised. it seemed to go away after about an hr or so.

it didn't happen again until yesterday when i was watching tv. i wasn't doing anything at all with my hand & it suddenly started doing the same thing again. today it is still bruised and slightly swollen and slightly sore just in the top to middle section of my middle finger. it worried me more this time because i wasn't doing anything with my hand when it happened & it has lasted so far about 24hrs.

would love to find out what & why this is?

I am glad to have found this site. I have, in the last week, had this happen to my right ring finger twice. First the finger started to swell which felt as if a tourniquet had been applied at the base of the finger and was cutting off all circulation. The skin was so tight that I thought the tip was going to burst. The swelling finally went down after 30 minutes. Then there was bruising from the top joint almost down to the base of the finger. This was on the palm side of my hand. The first time it happened, I was simply sitting down at a table, eating lunch (with my right hand). The second time it happened, I was wringing out a cloth (also with my right hand). The second time this happened, I noticed that the finger was very cold compared to the others on the same hand. I have low blood pressure, have been anaemic my whole life, and have always bruised easily. I'm a 37 year old female, living in Canada, with relatively good eating habits and lifestyle. I do not smoke and drink socially (maybe once a month x1 glass of wine). I have high cholesterol but have not been diagnosed with anything else. There seems to be a common thread in many of the posters have low blood pressure. I wonder if this has anything to do with it?

I had the same symptom today... My middle finger just started swelling, bruising, and got slightly numb. There was no bite or obvious impact causing this... Does anybody know what this is caused by???

These postings are really helpful and interesting! I live in Canada, have Raynauds, low blood pressure, good health, happens mostly on the middle finger, though have had the ring finger on opposite hand...exactly as everyone says, a little like a bee sting then swelling, tight, ouch and quite the bruising. Love to know what it is...can't blame everything on pre-menopause cause I'm assuming some men are dealing with this...and my very 'funny' 19 year old said...'it's old age mommy!'
Anyway...whatever it is...it'd be nice to know there's nothing to worry about 'further?'
Take care EVERYONE!
