I talked to my doctor about this and he said it is Raynaud's Phenomenon. Basically a vaso-spasm due to a vascular anomaly, and nothing to be concerned about. I found it interesting because my mom has Raynaud's and it can be hereditary. I asked my mom if she's ever had this happen and sure enough she has! anyway, hopefully this is helpful to people looking for answers.

I'm 35 and this has been happening to me for 10 years.... about 4 times a year. It happens when I'm either sitting or walking, neither doing or touching anything. My vein will pop up real big and the only way to stop the pain is to push on it and pop the vessel. Of course then it leaves me with a big bruise. My fingers never turn white and I don't have the numbing that others have mentioned. Lord I wish! Unless you have this happen to you, you can't imagine how painful it is. It happened today and I've never seen it this bad. My finger is swelled up twice it's size, it's hot and very black. It's so hard it feels like there's a rock in it! I worry that it could be a cholesterol blockage and what happens when it breaks free and goes to my heart or brain? I really hope someone can find an answer to this.

I get the same too in my fingers and sometimes the palms of my hands and recently my toes and then last night on top of my foot. i do have clotting probs and also high platelets and high white count and at present I am under a hematologist. The foot one last night was the biggest and most painful i have had. Mine also happens more in either extreme cold.

Same symptoms as those described. I am 26 female, low heartrate and blood pressure. About 3 weeks ago I was just sitting in class and my index left finger felt pinched in the top part. It bruised and swelled within 10 minutes and then was really numb for about a week. It went away. Now it is back yesterday! I am curious if this will continue throughout the summer since I will no longer have such constant cold hands and feet.

I am quite sure this is because in the last 6 months I have repeatedly exposed my hands to severe cold weather. As a I result, I seem to have developed all the symptoms of Renauld's syndrome.

I am happy to see I'm not alone. I am a 42y/o female and I live in the states. I have had sudden pain, swelling and then bruising in my finger joints for a few years. I have low blood pressure and high cholesterol. Other than that, I am healthy and normal weight. It seems to happen when I open a cabinet or lightly grip something. It happens on both hands but mainly my left. I always have cold hands and feet. It has never happened on my feet. Strangely enough, it happened yesterday, for the first time, on the left side of my chest, right above my breast. I had this annoying pain, around a quater size, and an itch for the day. This morning there is a bruise in that spot. It doesn't hurt today, but when I pressed on the area yesterday, it was sore underneath. I've never mentioned it to my doctor, but I will at my next visit. If anyone has any further information, I would love to have it! Good luck everybody!

This happened to me for the first time today and my first thought was a blood clot so I was relieved to read of the experience of others.
I had just put a couple of plates in the dishwasher (with my right hand) and closed it (probably with my left) when I felt a stinging sensation in my left ring finger and looked down to see the vein in the lower crease standing out - and purple. The lowest segment of my finger felt hard, then the bruising spread and the lower part of my finger became swollen. I applied ice for about an hour and now (4 hours later) my finger looks more normal, though it's still hard and bruised and feels sore if I apply pressure .
Like so many others, I have a slow heart rate, low blood pressure and cold hands. I'm 63 and generally healthy, though I've always been somewhat breathless when walking up slopes. Let's hope someone can enlighten us all.

This just happened to me tonight for the first time. Strange to not find any accurate descriptions of it anywhere but in this thread on this board! Happened on the bottom of my foot, felt like a wasp sting, started scratching like mad when i realized there was a swollen vein there and that scratching was increasing the pain 100fold. I have since left it alone and it doesn't hurt but i'm afraid to put weight on it. i just had blood work done a couple months ago and everything was completely normal.

24 yrs old. Palm-side of my ring finger. White and purple, pain, tingling, numbness for about 10 minutes, then just a bruise. Weird. I have Raynaud's. I thought it might have something to do with that. It's happened once before.

This is so weird. I thought I was the only one that this happens to. When I ask other people about it, they look at me as if I'm crazy. Every now again for years I get this sharp pain in finger and very quickly it turns purple and red. It's really sensitive to the touch. The sharp pain only last a few minutes but my finger stays bruised for a couple of days. I don't know why this happens. I'm 33 and I have high cholestrol.

Finding this post has calmed me down too as I've just had this happen to me for the first time today.

First thing I thought too was a clot, but after swallowing a couple of asprin (just in case) followed by a few minutes to calm down, I've checked circulation etc and all seems ok.

My symptoms sound exactly the same as everyone else, sudden pain in the middle muscle of my index finger followed by general feeling of heat and swelling/throbbing of the whole finger. Then the pain fades after about 15 mins. Now I'm watching the bruise slowly form, but I gonna keep running my finger under the cold tap because that seems to help, also I'm keeping my hand elevated to ease the general puffiness feeling of my finger.

I also have Raynaud's although I haven't suffered in the last few years, maybe because I don't ride my motorbike in the winter any more!

Btw, I've just been carrying heavy bags too, so probably caused this myself, although the incident occurred when I was sat on the sofa about half an hour later!

My feeling is that this is just basically an injury, and that it will heal normally over the next few days.

I just had this happen to me this evening, was a little worried because i thought it may have been a clott or something of that sort, but after reading that there are others who have experienced the same thing, i feel a bit more relaxed. If anyone has answers, please post them.

Thank goodness, I found this blog! I am 46 year old female and I have been having this problem for years. My blood pressure is normal and I do not have Raynauds Syndrome. I get many headaches and now my finger tips hurt frequently. I told my doctor about the intense itching or pain and then the bruising and she said it was nothing. Had blood tests and all normal but a little elevate cholesterol. I thought I was nuts and never knew I was not alone. I just wish a doctor would chime in and give us some answers.

This has happened to me in my thumb joint. I twisted open a bottle cap bottle and then a bit later when I had gloves on I felt a sting on my thumb. I took my glove off and my thumb was tight, throbbing and turning purple at the joint. It was painful but went away after a few days and then came back today for no reason, painful and bruised again. I always have cold hands and feet, as a child it was really painful to be in the cold. My thumb is very sore. Glad to find these posts.

I too have this happen occasionally, sometimes on my thumb or big toe, sometimes on any other finger. Feels like a sting, then it swells and bruises. Hurts for an hour or so, then swelling goes down and bruising goes away after a couple days. Sometimes I have done nothing to provoke it, sometimes I just bump it a little and it happens. What is the cause of this?

I am another with the same symptoms but no answers. 30/female, Brisbane, Australia, and have had 4 occurrences in the last few months - nothing before - two of which were on the same day. My first was on my palm under my thumb, the second on my middle finger, and yesterday on both my thumb and little finger. On no occasion was there any trauma beforehand. I can relate to the painful sting and watching the bruise spread. I have been suspected of having Reynaud's but have never investigated it. I have a GP appt tomorrow and will repost if I find anything of interest.

Nice (in a sad way) to know I'm not alone. It took a lot of googling to find this info.
