I've had my IUD for 2 1/2 months so far, about a week ago I noticed a horrid smell from down there. I did some research (I freaked out because i thought it was a std) but it doesn't fit any std descriptions. I have: no itch, no burn. Just Stink and tan ish discharge. it's gross. I found out that BV (Bacterial Vaginosis) is common for people with any IUD and for people who may have recently changed sex partners. Also, it's not just that that's causing it. Any woman, virgin or not, can get BV. It's simply an imbalance in naturally occurring bacteria in the vagina.
Have your doc check you out and they should give you antibiotics that will take care of it. In the meantime.. the smell is so embarrassing..
I'm a dancer, so I have to smell good down south, I have found this to work:
scented tampon (yes, even tho I'm not on my period), baby wipes or feminine wipes. Playtex makes some that smell awesome! and if you get baby wipes, get unscented.. you dont want to go from smelling like a fish carcass to a baby's ass.
Use unscented soaps and dont irritate the area more!
Use body spray, not perfume. You can reapply body spray to keep smelling fresh. ODing on perfume is bad news, you dont want to draw negative attention to yourself.
Hope I helped! :-) Get it taken care of ASAP GIRLS, before it effects our mental health! I'm waiting on my appointment!!

Hi All
I have had my myrena for 4 years - its great once it settles (after about 1 year and your periods stop - initially you do get a little period which gradually month by month reduces due to the hormones in the coil, I couldnt live without it I have no side affects ( apart from THIS SMELL)and I have a very active sex life (one partner) and - this ammonia / foul smell is certainly prevellant on the days when I think I would have normally been about to get a period and it lasts about a week and then goes. ALso after sex it stays very strong! so I ensure I always shower after and at night I wake up it is also very strong. I also get bouts of thrush - bot sure if it all connected wit the Myrena but I think with regular checks and yearly screening thats all we can do - inthe mean time ladies - reach for the body spray!!!

I have had the Mirana for almost 3 years and it is great with the eception of the smell...........I have no idea if others can smell it or not. I was thinking is was an STD...I've been married for 13 years but one never knows what happens while on Military duty.......going to the doctor on Wed and will find out what is could be....at least this site has calmed me down some.knowing that many have the IUD and have the same symptoms.

I have the IUD too. I've had it for about 10 months now. I've never experience this foul smell down there until now. And it's gotten so bad I lied to my boyfriend (only partner) saying I was on my period so we wouldnt have sex.
Now I was just researching to see if I maybe have an STD or BV or something. But I don't burn or itch and no other signs of anything. And to me the smell kinda has a copper stinch so that's what lead me to think it could be the IUD.
But I'm going to get checked this week. And I just might take that thing out. But dang I hate my other options for BC!!

:$ omg i am so glad that i found people with the same problem. i was so scared that something was wrong with me. i quit having sex with my husband. i told him all the time that i was either on my period or that i was sick. i got mirena placed in about 8 mths ago. After the birth of my 2nd child. I developed the smell about 2 mths ago. i've been so worried. i thought that maybe i had something. There is no burning or itching just the smell. i also have a discharge that varies from tan to dark tan. i had never had any problem with smell or discharge before i got the iud but i didn't connect the two until now. i love the iud in the aspect that i can't get pregnant but after reading everyone's messages i think i am gonna get it taken out.....

This is crazy- i know that this post is out dated now, but i just have to add my 2 cents. i have had my mirena in for over a year. Before this one was inserted, i had one for the full 5 years before. SO i am am 6 year veteren of this, and a HUGE advocate of it. Lately, I have noticed the scent coming from down there. It isn't foul, or fishy or rotten.. Its more just a stronger version of my own scent. I have noticed sometimes that there is an ammonia-like scent mixed with it, but only sometimes. It makes me scared though because I am afraid other people can smell it if i am in a meeting or other close quarters, i mean, if i can smell it, probably everyone else can too, right? I have thought about the possibility of infection, because having this is means that we are more prone to themm but i have only been with one partner for 10 years. Its not itchy, or uncomfortable, and sometimes there is a discharge, but not funky or out of the norm. Getting rid of the mirena is NOT an option for me because I LOVE it. I havent had my period in over 6 years, and i dont have to worry about having any more kids until i am ready. So what are my options? I keep it very clean, so much so that even after sex i go and take a shower right away. What can help with stuff like this? Help!!

I've had the copper IUD for two years now and just recently have noticed a smell. I had BV about a few months ago. Took antibiotics and it went away. Just two weeks ago I got it again. They gave me cream. Cleared it up. Then last week I noticed the smell again. Went to the doctor she found nothing. The "fishy" smell went away but just last night my boyfriend and I noticed it again. It's so depressing and frustrating. I talked to the doctor about other options. She said that with the copper IUD you're more prone to infections. It has something to do with the copper. It's hard for me to take birth controls pills because I get a little crazy. But I can't take this anymore. I've never had any issues down there and just recently started. I'm getting it taken out. I love the IUD because I'm not hormonal and I don't have to remember to take something, but this is getting depressing and I'm not wanting to be intimate with my partner. Or if we are, I'm worrying about smell. Over it!

I've had the copper IUD for almost two years now and I too have noticed the discharge and the SMELL. It's at it's worst the morning after I have intercourse. It smells like "sardines" and lasts for a few days.
From what I see I'm not the only one............ HOWEVER .........
Does anybody know if it increases the chances of getting CANCER?
My mon just found out she has cancer in her cervix, and I'm scared.
(she's never had the IUD) Should i get it removed? Please help

If you think that you could get cancer from the IUD, you really need to talk to your doctor. Nothing we say will make you feel better.

OMG! I thought I was the only one going thru this. I also have Mirena for almost a year Dec.13th to be exact. But Ive noticed the smell and went to the doctor and got diagnosed with BV and that was in Jan of this year and I havn't had sex with anyone in over a year and the reason i got this stupid iud is because my son's father and I was suppose to get an apartment together last year and you know how that goes and I didnt want any popups. One would think if the doctors know this could happen they would tell you but no they just try to tell you bout irregular to no periods. I would rather having the periods than the smell. I keep myself clean, changed soaps to unscented and sensitive skin and all that and it just wont go away. Ive also been looking at femanol but is the only way you could get it is online? Ive also read that you ould soak a tampon in t tree oil and insert it twice daily that it will help but Ive been scared to try it even though t tree oil is antifungal and antibacterial it has a tendency to burn and I was wondering if I should dilute it in water but it didnt say so I didnt try. I think we need to get a lawsuit against Mirena because they are falsely misrepresenting their product and damaging peoples health as well as pain and suffering. If any body knows where to get femanol besides online please respond.

I am glade that I found this site. I have had the Minera IUD for 2 1/2 yrs. I just developed a foul smell. It is so uncomfortable. I discovered it at work. I think I will have this removed. I just can't get on the pill. I dont know what to do. The pill makes me as sick as the Depo. I wish we did not have to go through this. I accused my kids father of cheating. I have had the Mirena IUD for 7 months now and for the past 2 months I have been fighting a terrible fishy/decaying meat odor. It first started with an odor that got extremely worse after sex and then lead to an uncomfortable itch. Dr. prescribed meds for BV but 3-4 weeks later it came back, so here we go again with a different medication. Just when I thought it was cleared up, 2-3 weeks it's back again. I have never had an odor in my life and I can't handle it now...it's gotta go!
I'm considering just having the IUD taken out, however my string has worked its way up into my cervical canal so Dr is going to have to "fish" for it and will be painful.
Any advice???

I am so glad I'm not the only person experiencing this! After reading everyone's posts, and thanks to a snowstorm, I'm heading off to my OB/GYN to have my IUD removed this morning. I love the convenience of it, but I got it so I could have sex without having to worry about getting pregnant. It's kinda hard to even be in the same room as my boyfriend when he can even smell me when we're out shopping. I'll let everyone know how quickly things go back to normal. I'm for sure gonna buy a douche as soon as I get out of the doctors... Thanks so much everyone!!!!

OK - I think its well understood that an IUD causes vaginal odor...but that is part of having an IUD...did your docs not explain to you that they still are not 100% sure how an IUD works but that one of the ways it is thought to be effective is by thickening the discharge which then creates a plug through which sperm have a hard time swimming. Also, for those with a copper IUD, another reason why they believe it works is because copper is toxic to sperm.
So if we are looking at biochemical changes being brought about, would it not be reasonable that the delicate Ph balance is being thrown off and that is the cause of everyone's BV...You only have to google for the causes of BV and IUDs come up every time.
and for the record I have a Mirena (6 months) and I have started to notice it of late, together with very heavy discharge...but no bleeding, just cramping now and again.

Like everyone else here, I'm SO glad to know I'm not the only one (that's not to say I'm glad others are having to deal with this, tho)! I had a Mirena for the full 5 years and just got it replaced in November, so I'm over 5 years. I absolutely love it, but the odor is sometimes just awful...and I feel bad for whomever might use the restroom stall after I've left. :$ I only just started suspecting the IUD in the past couple of months. (abstinent these days...otherwise I'd have been looking into it much sooner! I actually had been wondering whether it might be because I was rotting in there from lack of activity or something. o.O )
The RePhresh really does work - it says to use it every three days but I find it works for up to several weeks. I use Cetaphil (very gentle) soap down there only, use gentle wipes, shower at least daily, and nothing helps when the odor decides to visit (and once it visits, it just grows and grows), except for Rephresh. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth it, as I definitely don't want to have my Mirena removed. The RePhresh has been like a lifesaver.
