I never put two and two together until a new coworker and I were talking and she said her friend had to get it taken out because it creates an infection within your body and produces that ammonia-ish smell. So I am researching and found this site- HOLY c**p, I am calling to get mine removed after searching and finding this website.

I did have a BV infection for a long time after i had my daughter and within that time frame I got the Mirena inserted (without knowing that I had a BV infection). I finally got the BV cleared up but had to go back to the doc to check on the smell. She sent it out to a lab and everything showed normal. I even bought one of those Vagisil pH testing kits and it came out at the normal range.

I am in the process of a divorce and can't even imagine trying to ever date again with this SMELL going on!

Other side effects that I've notice too-Facial hair growth along with thinning of pubic hair! NICE!!!!
Also I have had much trouble losing weight, although that could be a combination of many things.

I just hate the thought of having my period again but I just can't stand to stink anymore. Besides the fact I am a massage therapist and ALWAYS self conscious about being so close to people.

I'll post when I get it removed.

Im so glad i found this site and others share the same prob! I had my copper iud fitted a year ago and I am having it removed on thursday. I wanted it removed 6 months ago but my doctor convinced me to give it another 6 months for my body to adjust, I wish I had kept with my instincts and had it removed then! especialy after reading that tonight that I am not alone with my symtoms.
Before i had the copper IUD fitted my periods were light and short, it now seems that I am constantly on my period and I can no longer where tampax as my periods are so heavy. I split up with my partener shortly after I had it fitted and have not felt comfortable having a sexual relationship with anyone in the past 11 months due to me constantly bleeding.
I have also experienced an unpleasant smell, that I am constantly paranoid about.
I thought that there was something wrong with me, and was having it taken out on Thursday to eliminate it, Im am now much more confident that my body should return to normal once this thing is out of me!! I cant wait!

I had a fishy odor 7 days after having my IUD put in. I mixed a little tea tree oil with a warm water duche and it got rid of the odor in less than 3 hours!!!! I have used this remedy before to treat BV and it worked as well!

I'm very very very happy I found this!! I've had my implant for nearly 4 years and for the past year and a half I have been dealing with this odor. Everytime I went to the doctor I would ask if it was the implant and they told me it was just BV. I had never had BV before, so why am I suddenly getting it so frequently?? I have had every kind of treatment there is and nothing seemed to fix it!! I am relieved to know it's not just me and there is a large possibility I can take this implant out and be odor free!! It's been so embarrassing!! Thank you!!!

I have had my Mirena IUD for one year. For the last 6 months or so I have had a horrible odor. I have had plenty of yeast infections and know the difference-there is no discharge, discomfort or itching...just stink. I have looked on other discussion boards about side effects but this is the first one I have found dedicated to this particular side effect! I'm glad I found it. I'm seriously considering having it removed. I am worried that other people notice the odor...I know I do throughout the day. I can't take it anymore!

I have had this same issue which lead me to reasearch. It isn't a fishy smell but an ammonia smell. I too was worried it has to be the IUD. I've personally be douching to get rid of the smell, but stopped due to the unhealthy effects of douching. I am convienced it's the IUD.

Douching or using sparys will make the issue worse. Trust me I know. I have never encountered an STD. I had the IUD for a little over 4 years, never having a period throughout the entire 4 years. I began to have horrible cramping and since I was no longer actively having sex, I wanted the IUD taken out. I had a terrible bv infection behind my IUD.
You need to express your concerns with your doctor. Get a script for an ABX like Flagyl. Eat more yogurt. Wear cotton panties durning the day and wear no panties at all while sleeping.

I'm so grateful for this site and finding that other people are having or have had the same problem. I started stinking up a storm (i.e. fishy, rotten, decaying, just down right gross smells) 2 weeks ago and thought ok perhaps it's because my period is coming and I expected the smell to go away. I typically have absolutely no odor but wasn't too alarmed until my period came and went and I still stunk! I was sooo self conscious walking past people, especially while wearing dresses, for fear that they could smell me...in fact I'm sure they could - if I could then why not them??? For the last 2 weeks whenever I removed my undies to take a shower I thought I was gonna puke and pass out - the odor was repulsive and absolutely revolting. So 2 days ago I just couldn't take it anymore and did some research. Thank god a few people recommended RePhresh. Yesterday I used it and no more smell pretty immediately afterwards! Today I worked out and didn't smell myself and am back to having no-odor!! OMG I'm jumping for joy and am looking forward to wearing dresses and skirts with ease and walking past people without wondering whether they noticed the rotten, fishy, decaying odor coming from my you-know-what. :$ I hope this is the start of me getting back to myself. Woooo hooo, Go RePhresh!!!! XD

Disclaimer: I've had the copper iud (Paragard) for 1 year and didn't have any issues until 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it's gotta be the iud causing the problems because I've NEVER in my life smelled as nasty as I did the last 2 weeks and although I rarely get yeast infections (prob twice in my life and I'm 35) I do know the difference between a yeast infection and this gross thing that was happening to my body which it seems from reading these posts was bacterial vaginosis. I absolutely recommend RePhresh to help get you back to yourself.

Hello Everyone,

I got the IUD Mirena in 2005 after my third child. At first there were no issues however the smell started which I can say ruined my marriage. Men really don't understand how the body works and even with me explaining, douching, bathing the discharge and odor did not stop. I had my IUD removed in July 08. There is still some longer than normal bleeding and discharge every now and then. My OBGYN prescribed an antibiotic called Flagyl to restore the PH in my body she said. I took it for 1 week and washed with feminine wash and the odor went away. I no longer have the odor but if it comes back then I will be back on the Flagyl it worked for me.

I am having mine removed tommorrow, it is terrible, I have had it for 4 years and i cannot fight the funk any longer, I have had every STD test, vag cultures, and any other test they can swab for and I have been clean. It is a terrible distinctive smell. My husband calls it a " cheeseburger with extra onions". I am so glad I am not the only one. I thought my vag was dying, or I had some cancer growing in there. And not only does it mess with your vaginal smell, my underarms have that funky smell too, I guess my body just doesn't like it. But now I have the problem of finding a new birth control that is just as convenient, any suggestions?

Wow, Thank you ladies for sharing your stories!! I have been suffering with BV infections almost monthly for a year now. My doctor keeps prescribing flagil and it works like a charm to get rid of it, but it keeps coming back. For the first while, I accused my boyfriend of cheating, never thinking it could be the IUD. Well, that relationship ended and the BV kept coming back!!! Now, the cramping is getting sooo bad i can barely stand it and the brown discharge is horrible. I talked to my doc and he said it could be the stress I have been under, I was under more stress than usual, so I accepted that. I now know that it IS the IUD especially after reading this forum. I am having it removed and looking for an alternative. Any suggestions on this, i am 40 and a smoker, so that limits things a bit.

Here is some insight about IUDs and I hope that my experience can help some of you.

I had Mirena from December, 2008 to June, 2009 (7 months) and was having the same foul odor for the last 2 months and nothing could help it (I even tried douching with just water without results), until I went to the doctor and found out that I had a BV infection, something I never had before. Was given a prescription that worked wonders in a couple of days but the infection was back the following month. I had it removed and my infections stopped while I was IUD free. Just 2.5 weeks ago I got the Copper IUD (Paragard) inserted and the darn smell is BACK!!! Ugh! This is so annoying... So now I'm going back to the doctor to get a prescription, again. But the bottom line is that this is NOT a problem only related to the hormones in the Mirena, it's the IUD that causes this embarrassing problem. :-(

I had the Mirena IUC inserted in Nov 07 & a year later, I had an odor appear after my period in Nov 08. I got a prescription of Metronidazole & it cleared it up. This was at the same time of my yearly exam & nothing showed up in the lab work. The odor didn't come back until six months later, in June 09 after my period. I got another prescription & it cleared it up. The same goes for the next month, July 09. The odor is so strong, I can't stand to go to the bathroom & it is effecting my sex life. I took my doctor's advise & douched & used RePHresh & the odor is still there! OMG! I haven't changed my diet or medications. Since I haven't ever had a problem with odor, I suspect it is the Mirena, but a year after insertion? What are your thoughts?
