Wow, so glad I looked into this topic because I've been having the same issue. I'll try the Refresh but if that doesn't work, I'm having it removed. This should definitely be a topic discussd by your doctor before inserting the IUD.

No, it's not "well understood." I did research before getting my copper IUD, and I asked my doctor point-blank if it causes an increased incidence of BV, and she told me that was a "myth." A few months after getting mine inserted, I am having this issue.

The connection between IUDs and vaginal odor is absolutely denied by the mainstream medical community. Can you find any studies online exploring this question? Hardly any; only a bunch of message boards. Why is this so underground? What is going on here?

It is definitely the Mirena! I dealt with the smell almost 2 yrs thinking it would eventually go away. I washed several times a day but to no avail I continuously smelled the odor. Having enough of that & being self conscious about being intimate with my partner, I had it removed. The smell immediately went away!

ChristinaWell ive had it in for 2 years now and just after a year or so ive had this foul odor worse than the fishy odor and belly pain. And also from what ive read from lots of woman they have said they had it too and took it out. One said she had it a cpl of weeks too and had the odor took it out and the odor was gone. So explain that one. I think it might be the mirena but not for sure still looking up info. But will go see my dr.

I also.have a foul smell and light to dark bleeding, i have been bleeding for a straight month now, im moody, irritable, and sex is not as pleasant or pleasurable any longer. Ive had the mirena placed in December. Im thinking i need to contact my gyno and either see if i have an infection or to just get it taken out.

My gyno suggested that when this happens to put one or two acidophilus tablets up into your vagina. You can buy these in any vitamin aisle of your local pharmacy. He said it is because something has changed the delicate PH balance of bacterial and using the acidophilus helps to neutralize the bacterial balance. When I do this it helps with the smell

Woa.... I can't believe it!! I have had an IUD for as long as I can remember. I never experienced this with my 1st IUD in the 6.5 years I had it. Yes, I said 6.5 years!!                   I was unaware of the dangers & my husband was fixed so with a tight pocket book, it waited. (Bad choice ladies that are thinking of doing this- It could kill you)

2nd IUD put in same day the 1st was taken out. Jump ahead a year & a 1/2 later and suddenly foul smell. We as women know what is an "odd oder" coming from us. I knew it was not lack of cleanliness, purchased all new underwear, watched what I was using for laundry detergent & eventually accused my husband of 7 years of infidelity!!  The past 8 months I had been subscribed one thing or another for issues down there. Not yet having any oder to deal with. Not until I started having daily headaches and now lower back pain did it occur to me gee... maybe it's the IUD causing the recent smell & all this other c**p.

Well, due to the headaches and back pain I'll be calling my doc. tomorrow to make sure this is nothing to be concerned about, but it sure has been an eye opener. Guess I'll also be looking into what the first IUD was that was different from the 2nd because I can not justify the side effects I'm having this time compared to the 1st. So help me god if my doc. say's it's my body freaking out because I may be going into early menapause I will choke him!

Being a woman sucks!!  Just know you are not the only one out there feeling like the world can smell your stink. To bad we can't just install one of those febreeze auto sprayers in our panties. (minature size of course)  Hey, a woman can dream, can't she?   lol

I have had IUD -copper in for 3 weeks now- and there's been a terrible smell since, and I won't stop having blood, or bloody mucus. I have NEVER smelled, and have had maybe 2 yeast infections in my whole life-I'm 37. My body is naturally very clean, but now I have this horrible smell and discharge for the first time in my life. It IS the IUD - for the girl that doesnt' think that's it. Now my pelvis is hurting. I have an apt. to take it out tomorrow. Geesh. My husband is going to get fixed now. Screw this man-made "copper" in my uterus. How can that be good??

So glad I found this post.  I've had the Mirena for about 5 months and the smell is terrible.  I haven't called my doctor for suggestions on how to control it, but I think I will.  I may end up having it removed because it's so embarassing.  I had it with the copper IUD also  but not as bad - and it went away when I had the IUD removed.  Now it's back.  That clinches it for me along with all your posts.  The IUD is the problem.  Too bad, because it's so easy. I have had the Mirena IUD since 6 weeks after my son was born (He will be turning 1 on the 12th of this month.) At the beginning I bled and bled.. which the doctor told me was normal. After that stopped I noticed a strong smell coming from down there. At first it smelled like ammonia and now it's something much worse, like NOTHING I had ever smelled before. As a nursing student I know that our bodies have a natural scent but this is so far from natural. After looking up the side effects this foul smell accompanied with a discharge is noted under 'severe side effects.' This problem has kept me from having a normal active sex life for too long and I usually have a very active sex life with my partner of 2 years. I called my doc today and made an appointment to have it removed tomorrow... Anyways I still have my period on it so I won't be missing out on all of the 'benefits' that this IUD supposedly offers. All it has done for me is make me feel unclean and less libedonus. Totally not worth it in my book. I have a feeling that in time we will all find out that this is not normal and that Mirena is dangerous to our health. I hope that you all seek out answers from healthcare professionals and if you are experiencing any of these adverse effects, you should consider having the Mirena removed and seek other forms of contraception. Good luck everyone!
