Oh my goodness. I am horrified at the smell. I've had my iud for 2 years now. I use to have the copper IUD but because of issues of bleeding so much that I would black out, I had to use an IUD with hormones. I get anxious when the smell comes. I notice it is stronger when it would normally be time for my cycle (it has completely stopped with the IUD). It is very noticeable. A relative pulled me to the side to talk to me about it. VERY EMBARASSED!!!! I also have a white discharge with the IUD some days way thicker than normal. Has anyone found a remedy for the smell that works for them?

Same. I have the Paraguard copper IUD. 3 months. Noticed the sour metallic odor immediately and discharge is also light tan/beige color. Funny how my nurses and doctors are quick to say that IUDs aren't associated with any vaginal odor yet there is an overwhelming community of ladies who are experiencing this. Just bc it's not been studied and proven doesn't mean it's not happening and is possible. -_- Hoping the odor goes away after 6 months.

I had Mirena for the full 5 years. I can definitely vouch that I had a smell develop after having the IUD put in and then once I took the Mirena device the unfavorable smell was no longer apparent. My partner was also very aware or the odor. I spoke to my doctor multiple times about infections or other causes. I had tests done and came back clean. My doctor refused to believe it was due to the device and told me to stay away from scented soap and that this was just what happens after you have a baby. She stated "Your body changes and this is just one of those changes."
I dealt with it because I have never had good results with other birth control (depression, severe weight loss, extreme mood swings, extended periods leading to anemia). The adverse smell is for some reason not recognized as a common side effect of Mirena.
I tried using Paraguard the 10 year hormone-free copper IUD. The smell has completely disappeared and Im back to normal in that sense. I have noticed with the copper IUD that I am experiencing chronic yeast infections (truthfully I would rather have yeast than the Mirena smell). I have never had a single yeast infection before Paraguard. The yeast infections are not considered a side effect of having the copper IUD but it is a "substantial risk-factor" since the tail creates a bridge and yeast clings to the copper material.

I have it too, honestly just deal with it. I’m an athletic female with a physical job, so odor down there is something I’ve had to deal with! It’s not easy being an active female and then adding an IUD to your problems! Hah! My boyfriend and past partner noticed it a little but they were mature about it and knew it was from the IUD. A man who puts you down for that is not someone you should be with anyways. You can find something to get rid of the smell, your body’s not used to having something implanted in you, and your vagina cleanses itself. Just wash with gentle soap and usually after my periods and drinking fluids all day, the smell goes away. This is the price we have to pay for not having children. It’s either this or hormones and mood swings. I love the paragard because I’ve had some scares! I would rather tolerate the unpleasant smell once a month than get an abortion from a mistake. Just have to keep going to the gyno twice a year or so!
Good luck and remember that everyone’s body is different, you can’t go for what others are saying!

I have the copper iud, too. For the first eight months I just had extremely heavy periods. But then I skipped a month and now my periods are one month on very heavy, one month off just spotting and THE MOST HORRIFYING SMELL!! I've started spraying the crotch of my jeans with a cleaner called Odor Bully because friends and coworkers started noticing a "stale rot" smell. Changing my pads and tampons doesn't stop it. My underwear and pants smell rancid when this happens.
Is removing my iud the only way to remove the problem? I love my iud but this is unbearable!!
