Copper IUD since July 2017.
I totally feel the same way! So much for trying to be hormone free. I noticed a foul, slightly fish and copper smell immediately the day after the insertion and knew it was because of the IUD. I’m going onto 8 months and hoping it goes away but it hasn't. I’m torn between deciding to keep it or going back to the pill. Love the almost perfect birth control solution but not happy with discharge and smell.

Hi guys ! I have had my Mirena IUD in for the past 3 years now and it’s good for up to 5 years the one I got. I have noticed a foul soy saucey rancid smell that I get once in a while since i’ve first had this in me. It started showing up about after 3 weeks having it in. It would go away and come back. Never had any other symptoms, just the smell that bothered me. It is in fact the IUD. I have never had this type of smell before only since I have had the IUD in. It’s not that bad, I just have to wash down there real good and it goes away. I know we all have different bodies so the smell might be worst than others. Went to get an STD check up thinking I might have caught something but everything came back clean and it’s most deff the IUD. I just deal with the smell. Rather have a terrible smell for a week than to be pregnant for 9 months

I don't think its the IUD. I had a labia reduction that was not correct and I haven't had sex since that was some years ago and they haven't corrected it. So I don't have sex. I had an IUD fitted but before I had the IUD fitted I noticed that I was getting brown blood at the end of my period and was getting different length periods. I was also getting heavy periods so I had an IUD fitted the Marina. This helped with the period situation and my iron levels.

I also noticed the foul smell even though I wasn't having sex with anyone! I have had all the STD tests and they came back negative. I've been checked for HIV, everything all negative. I have taken antibiotics and the thrush medication everything. It seems that when I had a smear test recently that there was bleeding when they used a small brush to take the cells and to me the area looked inflammed. I started reading up about what that could be. I thought it was ectropion of the cervix as this can cause a foul smell in some people. I queried this with the gynaecologist and she seems to think that its not that but atropic change and petechial haemorrhages on the cervix.

Call me old fashioned but I started to wonder about the environmental smells that I have been coming into contact with and the food I have eaten out and how I feel afterwards. I have noticed that I become lethargic after shopping in supermarkets and notice funny strong smells as you walk through the door of the supermarket. When I have eaten out and felt ill afterwards very often its because the food has been tampered with in some way to make you feel ill, to deliberately bring on symptoms such as foul smells in the vaginal area.

You will then notice a whole new range of products in the chemists claiming to relieve these symptoms which very often do not but they get your hard earned money into the bargain. You then keep the medical people in a job and very busy working out what the problem is. This petechia I have never heard of before and I do believe now that if they know how to keep you healthy they will also know how to make you ill. This world is not perfect and its inhabitants are far from perfect and when the economy is bad we have already seen that people will resort to underhanded tactics.

The vaginal area and your whole body is amazing and treated correctly by the environment that your in, the food you eat without being tampered with and you looking after yourself it will present great results. The times we are living through do not allow us to make the most of our health as we are living through a crisis in the economy or they would have us believe so. The medical people have to make a name for themselves and so if we are coming into contact with a foreign environment that is triggering off bad symptoms in our bodies they are on the road to making that name for themselves. They more than likely know what the chemicals are that we are coming into contact with affecting our bodies and whatever area of medicine they need to research they only have to tamper with your food to cause a problem in that part of your body and there we have it. We are caught up in vicious cycles.

Your body is amazing and can sustain you throughout your life time with very little problems but if its being interferred with through constant environmental problems and food issues it will get sick and produce symptoms. Start to take notice of smells in places you go to and stop eating out and see what you come up with.

I know my hormones have been affected by places that I have been in and I do notice the smells in those places. Supermarkets, work places everywhere. When I don't eat out and only cook my own food I get much better results. I still have this foul smell in the vagina and I too get the ammonia smell. I think we are definitely being tampered with as a whole not just individual people.

I really don't understand how doctors say the smell can't be due to the IUD. I too had mine for 2.5 years and I had this smell on and of for over 6 months. no other side effects, been to doctor several times and she still wont admit it's the IUD.

I had my first Mirena inserted about 8 years ago, not for contraception but for cramping pains at random times of the month. I couldn't fault the mirena, however, I have had my second one in for 3 years and I would put money on a change of their formula from the original one I had. I also have had this very OFF odor from down there and have had for the length of time of second one inserted...Also read recently that they can bring on early menopause...Not happy with this one at all and would like to have it removed ASAP but fear the pain will return.

Had my copper for 5 years. As soon as I got it, I’d have this rotten smell every months for a couple of days. After analysis, my gyno found out I had a little bit of a BV but nothing alarming. He prescribed Flagyl for ten days. 1 months later, the smell came back. He prescribed Secnol which I took with vaginale probiotics and oral prebiotics. Smell came back the next month. Tried preventing it every months which would work more or less : Vitamin C locally, rephresh gel, probiotics, prebiotics, massaging my belly with tea tree oil... I have tried it all. I don’t know how much money I’ve spent but I can tell you it’s a lot.
A few months ago, the smell started being stronger with this thick discharge (and it was NOT a yeast infection. Because I know what a yeast infection looks/feels like). It smells like rotten flesh mixed with a rotten fish. So gross. The worst part was that at this time, the smell became constant and nothing would make it go away. I started douching because it was the only way to get a relief for a few hours (apple cider vinegar, and peroxyde hydrogen.) also tried the boric acid capsules and homeopathic capsules. I was depressed, severely. This drives you insane because it takes away your confidence as a woman and your feminist. I finally got my IUD removed today, like 2 hours ago. We will see if the smell go away. But I feel relieved. I will keep you guys posted

Hi there! Do you use anything special to clean?

Let's hope the smell disappears for you...and hopefully not bought on premature menopause , as I am thinking it might be a similar odor...I recall my mother having the same odor after entering the toilet after her, although when I was a kid didn't know why she smelled this way, but now acknowledge it may have been that she was going through menopause...

Hey Gals!

I have had my IUD for roughly one month now and am experiencing said odor. Admittedly, I do have unprotected sex at least once a day so my boyfriend and I thought it was maybe ejaculation mixed with light spotting (as there was a hint of pennies to the whiff). We tested this theory and didn't have sex for a few days BUT I would still experience the odor. Im figuring maybe the hormones are messing with my PH (can they even do that?) so I am going to order some PH balancing cleansing cloths and things of that nature. If that doesn't work, the internet will be my guide to new vaginal odor experimentations. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** posting of social network links, groups, invitations, or usernames is not allowed *** Please read our Terms of Use

note: I am 20 and have never had a child, this definitely isn't menopause, never an STD or STI, and this is my only IUD complication thus far.

Good luck ladies!

So following up about my IUD removal 4 days ago.
When I had my IUD, my vagina was really dry with a thick, clumpy white discharge that smell like rotten meat. I literally felt like something died in there. After 5 years of spending thousands of dollars to prevent and cure that, the smell became constant and nothing would make it go away.
So I got it removed 4 days ago.
The smell has changed. It’s really hard to describe, it smells like - sorry for the details - really bad breath or dead skin something like that. But the discharge is becoming clear again and I can feel my vagina is not dry anymore.
I’m praying for everything to get back to normal, like BEFORE I had the IUD because I’m starting to think that something is wrong with me and I have tried EVERYTHING. I was still inserting probiotic suppositories til 2 nights ago but now I’m trying to let my vagina auto wash.
The smell is less sick : it smells like old blood and again, skin cells. So I’m praying and hoping really bad it goes away !

I've had the mirena iud for almost 7 months now. I've experienced slight bleeding after sex and spotting for days that made it hard for me to keep track of my actual period activity.
Then I noticed the odor started. If more women are experiencing similar symptoms esp with the vaginal odor that I never had prior to mirena. My conclusion would be to blame the iud so I am scheduling for its removal asap.
Thank you all for sharing your experiences with Mirena. This helped guide me to make a decision today.

I've had the Mirena IUD since 2015. I've started experiencing order issues about 6 months ago. Pungent fishy smell.. I've never had bad smells and my normal discharge used to be like egg white consistency and with the IUD it became thicker, white. All my test came back NEG: std, BV, yeast infection etc.. I was prescribed Metronidazole gel.. (just FYI.. It curdles inside you like cottage cheese bc of the IUD) The gel tamed the smell for a short while, then the next day you wash all the curdles out, the smell returns that night, slightly faint but still there. Then I noticed when I got my period, the smell was just atrocious! I can't stand bad period blood smell, I've never had to deal with that before and I'm 35. I've tried the Refresh applications... Still came back. Im going to make an appointment and get it removed and try to get on the pill. It's about quality of life and I notice I'm extremely sad when I go to the bathroom, change my clothes to get in the shower or changing sanitary items for my cycle. I'm also mad they didn't talk about this more, I would have never chosen the IUD if I knew the side effects where this horrible. I already have other health issues and side effects on my plate, really don't need to add another!
