I think I'm suffering the same thing. I have had a cold the past few days and I'm on the upswing. I woke up at 5am this morning with a pain right in the center below the ribcage. The pain is not constant, it comes and it goes within usually 30 seconds and lasts for 5-10 seconds. I drank water, thinking it was hunger pains. It seemed to help. It came back within 15 minutes, I tried water again, and same thing happened. When I stand up or sit up the pain feels like it's in my mid-back, same area. I have no health insurance, I'm a student, and can't afford to get any tests. My hope is that it will go away as some of you say it comes and goes.
I have no gall bladder and get this occasionally. Its like a spasm in the center below ribs like a dagger. I use BENTYL, which is an antispasmodic and in less than 15 minutes its gone. Ask doc about that.

I too have had middle upper abdominal pain. It has been going on for a couple of months. Had all kinds of tests - thinking it was gallbladder - but all came back normal. Other symptoms include a low grade fever, nausea after eating, loss of appetite. I noticed the pain in the abdominal area (right in the middle) comes & goes. It was bad last night after doing some sit ups. The GI Dr. has taken a course of action to try OTC prilosec, a low fat diet, reducing consumption of caffein. But I don't honestly believe that is what's going on here.
Does anyone else have similar symptoms - it's been difficult to find posts that include middle upper abdominal pain.
Thank you -

I havent taken anything for it yet...Gonna try a pepto tab and some ibuprofen. then maybe I can get a little sleep tonight (It's now 5am o_O)
