I'm 19 years old and I have had this feeling all of my life, and its only occurred to me today to look this up as I felt the amazing tingly feeling on the back of my neck as I was talking to a stranger. I have always wondered what this is and I only seem to get it when talking to certain people. I'm mainly just listening to people but can only remember three strong occurrences of this happening where the feeling was orgasmic. The people I was talking to, I had no strong relation with at all - just random people. I wasn't attracted to these people so i'd just love to know what makes this feeling happen! Is it something subconscious that i'm attracted to with that person? Is there anyone else that only gets this whilst talking to certain people?

So great to find out about "ASMR" (since most of my family have known about/experienced this since childhood, but we had our own term for it), and to find out so many other people are subject to it. Glad to be here.

As many of you have mentioned, I thought I was alone in having this feeling! I have experienced it all my 49 years. I am male and I typically have this amazing tingling and euphoric sensation strongest immediately after a haircut. I also have notice it when listening to certain voices on my voice mail. As well as when certain people (especially with accents) are trying to provide detailed. The feeling is of utter bliss and I often find it difficult to concentrate on anything else, as I don’t want the feeling to subside. Over the years I have been able to lengthen the time frame of each episode but I have yet to bring them on myself without a trigger. Great topic BTW!

I used to feel this often as a child and teenager. I thought it was random and not triggered. I would experience this in class if it was quiet or at night before sleep. I get a similar feeling now as an adult when listening to guided meditations, but never that total feeling of tingling paralysis through my head spine and arms as when I was younger. I also used to experience a pop in my sinuses as it started, and could extent this felling by concentrating about an inch behind my eyes. So hard to describe... I hope some real research goes into this soon!

Wow I thought I was crazy... For a long time now I have had this feeling, as long as I can remember actually. The longest longest ago i can remember is in elementary school where I will never forget... In like 1st grade I let someone use my pencil and I got the feeling but the tip broke and I just felt a tingle in my brain and they went to sharpen it in an electric sharpener, right when the noise sounded the tingle just maximized time 1,000,000 like the best most unexplainable feeling in the world. After that I would get it when ever people would do favors for me. Now what usually triggers it is people with Cuban or other thick or different accents or people with really deep voices. It just feels like a gigantic weight was held off my shoulders though when I discovered I wasn't alone and other people have it, I'm 15 years old btw

I don't know if I have ASMR ... but the sounds, going to do my haircut, people who touch my neck, back, my checks, softly triggers an involuntary reaction in in the middle of my back .... not in the head and it doesn't relax me at all ... If somebody knows something about it that could help me a lot... for me it's really really annoying... literally when I kiss a girl if happens and gets out of control .. I have to stop.
The sensation is like cramp or contraction in the middle of my back on the right side.

I know you posted this quite a while ago but I just wanted to reply because I found it amazing that someone else gets this sensation under the exact same circumstances that I do, especially the "unexpected compliments from strangers" and "being given detailed instructions by a stranger". If I receive an email at work from someone that I don't know very well that has been written very carefully and politely to request something from me, I get this sensation very strongly. Re-reading the email will trigger it again. Thank you for sharing your experience!

II couldn't figure out how make an original post, so I decided to reply to my favorite post. Today is 2/4/2014.

I first noticed ASMR when I was four years old and a three year old neighbor girl started "reading" a book to me. I thought something like "she's nuts!" and got an strong tingling sensation on my scalp. Other examples: A barber in the movie "Shoah" going through a bunch of silly (to me) gestures while giving someone a haircut; a worker at the mall carefully cleaning already clean tables and trash cans; watching a child draw on youtube; watching an African woman very carefully and seriously apply ridiculous (to me) makeup to another African woman in some TV program.

I wondered why evolution programmed me to enjoy this stuff so much. Perhaps it was so that I would stay quiet, not make fun of them, and possibly be able to later exploit them in some way.

I discovered a couple years ago that I could bring the feeling on autoerotically by rubbing a bunch of grease in my hair and then slowly combing the grease out, but it's not as good as the real thing.

The ASMR videos on youtube are also not as good as the real thing.

The real thing seems to involve someone carefully, intently doing something that strikes me as pointless or futile, without them being aware of how pointless and futile they are. They think that they are carefully doing something important or useful. (Listening to my girlfriend crack peanut shells might be an exception to my hypothesis - a predator/exploiter lying in wait and give support to your hypothesis - sit still for hygienic reasons.)

For the last 19 years I've often wondered why I seem to be able to find every possible weird thing on the internet except stuff about "makes my scalp tingle". Now that I've found ASMR, the universe seems to make sense finally.

I'm male, Norwegian/American, bi-polar, never took my meds, no manic episodes for 11 years, 70 years old, introvert, socially incompetent, 118 IQ, read 250 words per minute, can't sing or draw, loved algebra in high school.

Hello all, I just wanted to say I also have been experiencing these "crown tingles" and I'm not sure when it all started... I started looking it up after feeling the sensation while watching the show Heroes... It only lasted a few seconds, but it feels great and I want to learn more about it. Speaking of stats, I have ADD/ADHD. Does anyone else on here have that? I've never paid much attention to it until the last few times it happened. I'm definately going to try and prolong it when it happens. I think I will mention it to my doctor when I see her next.

OMG. I too have had this sensation. I first remember feeling it when I was a young boy and a friend of my father was showing my how to tie a particular fishing knot. He was very slow and deliberate and spoke softly. I am now 50 and still get it. The sensation I get is an amazing feeling that radiates down from the back of my head, down my neck, then across my shoulder blades. It is absolutely fantastic. If it could be bottled we would make millions lol. I would love to know what causes it. I heard something about a particular nerve that goes up the rear of our neck that sends of sensations when we feel good. I dont really care though, I just love it.

Wow, I always thought I was the only one feeling this!

I guess I would relate it to when I am just feeling very loved for some reason, could be a stranger who suddenly talks very nicely to me, softly, calmly when I guess I just feel their love coming to me.  At other times it could be when someone is paying me close attention, or playing with my hair.

Have not had the feeling for several years, but recently been getting it when talking to a special friend who really makes me feel loved.  For me it is a feeling of being loved and it makes my scalp tingle and makes me go all dreamy.
