I used to have severely depressed mood that lasts for two weeks or more. There was included loss of interest for usual activities accompanied by sleep and appetite disturbance. I felt guilt and worthlessness with thoughts of even suicide. That made my family press me to visit the doctor, who said that is major depression. He prescribed me Welbutrin, so I want to know how this drug can help me.

Wellbutrin is relatively new antidepressant medication which is given to help relieve major depression. Unlike the more familiar tricycles antidepressants, Wellbutrin tends to have a somewhat stimulating effect. This drug occasionally causes weight gain, but more common effect is weight loss. 28% of the people who take this medication lose 5 pounds or more. If you already lose some weight because of your depression, then maybe Wellbutrin is not right medicine for you. Important is that you take this drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usual dosing regimen is 3 equal doses of Wellbutrin, spaced evenly throughout the day. There should be at least six hours between doses you take during the day. Minimizing side effects can be done with low starting dosage and gradually increasing. Your doctor will check if Wellbutrin works for you and then have you continue taking it for at least several months.
