Hi, my name is Melinda, I had a bunion (L) removal in July 27, 09...Dr. had to break the toe, scrape the bone and put 2 pins in. I was in a lot of pain and after 4 weeks I am still in pain,,toe is still numb, foot is the color of purple and still swelling. I have had ALOT of different surgeries and never had to use all of my pain medication. But with this surgery I have gone through 2 bottles of Darvocet and am still experiencing lot's of pain. I'm starting to wonder "what have I done?" I'm hoping that my foot and toe will come out in decent shape.

i had surgery on the 2nd of september on my left foot, im at home now but am in a lot of pain, the surgery went really well, all i do now is sleep as the pain get quite bad, it seems to hurt when i put my foot down, i have to go back in 2weeks to see how its going. i went down to surgery at 10.30am and came up at 11.30am, i had genrall anashetic and i cannot remember anything, they also gave me morphine but that didnt help the pain, i have a special show that helps me walk on my heel and cruches, im 18 by the way and have waited for surgery since i was 12. they should operate on someone so young as the bunions will still come back, you need to stop growing before they operate, i feel pain in my big toe and down the side. they gave me dissolvable stictches and put 2 screws in my foot. i was not scared but its just thepain after that hurts me, ill keep ypu all informed on how my days get.

You have nothing to be afraid of, I can assure you. I have the surgery on my left foot December 17, 2009, and now I am doing fine.. It will be painful, and it will get irritating, but you will get past that.

Hey I'm 15 and gettin surgery in June. My doc told me that I would have to be out of school for at least a week after my surgery so I chose to do it in the summer. Yeah it'll make summer different but it's better than dealin with the make-up work.

I had bunion surgery just a bit over 7 weeks ago on one of my feet. I had Austin bunionectomy and Akin ostiotomy as well as a bone spur removed from the inside of my big toe. Had the surgery on a Thursday and was back at work on Monday...but I do have a desk job so could limit my time on my feet and keep my foot elevated. I had a boot that was completely non weightbearing on the front half of my foot, so could walk, although it wasn't very pretty! Had stiches out after two weeks and boot off after 3 weeks. Have been strictly in tennis shoes since then, just starting to be able to get into some sandals, depending on the style. My foot is still swollen and thick, but they say that can last up to a year, but not as extreme. I have been doing stretches for my big toe, which doesn't touch the ground when I am barefoot, but it is finally starting to come around.
As for the actual surgery, I had it done in the Dr's office, awake, and felt nothing except the shots to numb the foot. Pain was very tolerable afterwards. I think the 2nd week had to be the worst. My whole foot felt that numb pain and there were a couple days that it felt so swollen that I thought it could explode.
Prior to the surgery, I was an avid walker, usually 5 to 6 miles a day, and I am just starting to be able to get back into that, ( 1 or 2 miles a day) but there are good days and bad days. Just don't push it on the bad days..Take it easy and listen to your foot. I was actually doing 30 to 45 minutes of floor exercises the day after surgery..
I was lucky enough to inherit these lovely bunion feet. Plan to have the other one done after summer is over. I honestly have to say it has not been that bad and hope my next one goes as well as this one did.

I have had bunions since I have been 12 (Heredity) and was told that I had to wait until my foot stopped growing to get the bunion surgery. The past few months Ive been really thinking about getting it done because I'm embarrassed and I cant wear normal shoes and they ache sometimes. Every time I think about the surgery it feels like I'm gonna burst into tears, I'm not good with pain! Like why did this have to happen to me? Do you get put to sleep during the surgery because honestly if I heard that buzzing sound of them shaving the bone I would probably faint, and how long is the healing?

i'm 15 and had bunion surgery 6 months ago. still effecting me to this day. i get random pain and i work on my feet so that might be causing it. i only got the surgery because my growth plates closed already and i'm so short i'm 4'10 its crazy. after my surgery i had non stop swelling and pain because the medicine they gave me barley helped the pain. and it made me hyper and want to just walk around everywhere, so i did and i was on bedrest for a long while. so don't walk around just keep it elevated. now i know for the next surgery in a couple weeks or months.

I am 43 and am 10 days post op. Had right foot bunion surgery with removable pin (will be removed at the 4 wk mark). I am doing extremely well so far. Pain was very minimal, I have been controlling it with just 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours (and I typically take 5 for my periods, so that shows how minimal the pain has been). The worst part was the day after the surgery and the swelling / numbness from the surgery itself made me nuts, i have clusterphobia and thought the pressure in my toes was from the bandage being to tight but had to calm myself down and just deal with it. That went away by the end of the next day. My success so far comes from LISTENING to the Dr directions. I only get up to use the restroom or go to the Dr, other than that I am on the couch with my foot elevated and use ICE. I used Ice the 1st 4 days every 15 minuntes for about 20 minutes or 30 minutes if I had more disscomfort. I still use Ice but maybe just 1 or 2 times a day if I start to feel discomfort. I have had 2 post op Dr visits so far and the Dr has been very happy with my foot as there is minimal to no swelling when others after this surgery have had much more pain / swelling due to too much movement. Even on the crutches and no weight bearing you are still stressing your foot so I would recommned just sitting still. This so far has been the toughest part, going crazy just sitting around, but I am hoping it will be worth it in the end. Good luck to anyone going through this or about to go through it, hope all the posts help. They have helped me :-).

Hi! I'm just about to turn 21 and about eight weeks into my recovery from my left bunion surgery. Its barely swollen and its getting increasingly more comfortable to walk on. I go back to my doctor in a couple of days for another follow up. However, he wants to take the pin holding my toe straight out in another month. I've known quite a few people who have had the same surgery who haven't had to get the pin out. Does anyone know if it's really necessary to get the pin out of my foot?

It's the 8th week for me, too! Congrats on the successful recovery!
It seems like in some cases pins stay in and some are taken out. Depending on what procedure you had done, can be either way...your doc's the best person to ask, seriously...we'll be of a very little help here.

I am 8 weeks post bunion surgery.
I had a nerve block - but it didn't work - I woke up feeling like my foot had been hit by a sledge hammer - they said that the block should have worked. Because it didn't there were issues with the pain and the meds they could give in the first 24 hours. Worst pain of my life.

I dont regret the surgery but am becomming frustrated with the slow return of movement in the toe. I have been in normal shoes for about 3 weeks now - but need to avoid shoes that place pressure on the op site. The stretches hurt a bit, and I still get a fair amount of swelling at the end of each day.

One fo the hardest parts was sleeping with my foot elevated - it was so uncomfortable I struggled to get to sleep. I need to make sure I took a sedative pain killer before bed. I also threw my hips and back out from sleeping funny.

My chiropractor has been a godsend in my recovery. I had no idea going in how much else would be affected from not being able to walk properly. Everything was out of line- my knees, hips, back and neck. But not only that, I was getting pain and bunring feelings (sometimes like a bindy/bur was stuck in the bottom of my foot) and he was able to fix all that in a straight away.
I also had the issue of not being able to put my treated toe on the ground once I started walking again without the post op shoe. Turns out it was my ankle stopping it - it was out from the way I was walking - one little pull and my foot felt normal again and I could walk flat. Have been seeing him twice a week for the first 5 - now dropped back to about every 10 days. So worth the effort.

Don't regret having it done - but not sure how quick I'll go back for the second foot.

I had bunion surgery on my left foot November 5, 2010, my bunion came as a teenager after years in ballerina toe shoes. I'm 41 now, and I won't need surgery on my right. My doctor gave me a nerve block as well, and I experienced no pain post surgery and never too any of the pain medicine prescribed. I was given an ice (teck) machine to wrap my foot in immediately when I arrived home and I literally kept in on day and night the first week (along with keeping it elevated) and I believe that helped with not experiencing any pain and keeping the swelling under control. I used crutches for 2 weeks post surgery and went back to work a week after surgery (that was probably too soon - I recommend at least 2 weeks off).
I believe I am healing well and have let my doctor know that I started acupuncture and massage therapy to assist with the stiffness in the big toe joint (I highly recommend it!) and she supported that too.
I still have some numbness on the top of my big toe, but that should dissipate over time. My doctor also gave the me the Blaine Scar pad to help with reducing the thickness of my incision scar.
I went back to my exercise routine with my trainer about 3 weeks after surgery (we worked the upper body only then). Now I am back to my normal exercising (no running though).
Do the therapy exercises post surgery, as much as you can tolerate, to avoid scar tissue build-up and get the joint moving. Yes, it can be tight and sore, but not moving the joint will be worse. Eat good, take vitamins and I take a daily dose of Calcium/Magnesium and Colloidal Mineral Supplement for joints.
Good luck, find a doctor you trust and feel comfortable with & don't hesitate to look outside of medicinal treatment for your full recovery. ;-)
