What's up with that?

I rode by an empty lot that had been cleared for, I assume, a new house but smack in the middle of the property is a chain link fence that was surrounding 3 or 4 headstones. :umno:

Those are quite common around here. People used to put the family plot in some out of the way spot or maybe favorite spot on their property. As time moves on property is sold and smaller lots appear when people can no longer afford the taxes on their land as farm land turns into valuable house lots so that family plot becomes isolated.

You sure they didn't come across the graves when they tore down the buildings and leveled the ground?

Well at least it's not like Poltergeist where they moved the headstones but left the graves!! :|

There are some interesting random cemetaries out in the countryside here. Where there is no houses or church nearby but sometmes a nicely maintained old cemetary.

Some of my family has well kept cemetaries on the corner of our farm land. Of course, only relatives are allowed to be interred.

any hauntings yet?

No, this was just an empty lot. The headstones were never visible from the street before because of all the trees.

I like the old family cemetaries thing.

When I was a kid there was large field behind our houses with a dirt driveway that circled around past a couple gravel pits and up to the rear of the owners barn on top of the hill. When I was about 10 or 12 the owner began populating the field with house trailers and the cops came by and kicked us out of our favorite shooting range which was a gravel pit about 300 feet behind my house on land owned by another person. At the entrance to the "trailer park" there were several old gravestones lying flat that we kids discovered hidden under the tall grass years before the trailers came. We used to uncover them so we could read the stones. At first he didn't put any trailers where the stones were but about 15 years later when I came home from the army there were trailers where the stones had been. I have never been able to find out what happened to those graves. Of course we kids didn't write down the names. The town has no record of graves being there nor the historical society nor the cemetery overseers for the town. They act as if it must have been a kids hallucination when I ask about them. I keep hoping to hear about hauntings in that area but so far no luck.

I'm with MB. Especially in the south, you will find what seemingly looks like pasture land with a square plot of headstones. There may be as little as 2 or as many as 20, depending on how long it was there. This pasture land was no doubt someone's plantation or farm many years ago and they often buried their dead on their land, but sometimes up to a mile away from the house.

I've seen a lot of the family type cemetaries on properties I've hunted over the years.
