Why diabetics need to examine their eyes once a year?

I am a supervisor at a small restaurant and I manage a team of six waitresses. One of them is a diabetic and she told me that she needed the day off - at a really busy time for us. Apparently she needs her eyes examined and has to get this done once a year. She said all diabetics have to do this. Is it true, and why do they have to do this?
