Hi:
Research shows that first-degree family members (children, siblings, etc.) of people with bipolar disorder are more likely to have bipolar disorder than in families without the disorder. In addition, studies show that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to bipolar disorder. Your family history of bipolar disorder makes your grandson's chances higher. However, do the best that you can for your grandson in regards to his environment and health support. It's not definite that he will have bipolar disorder. If you are so stressed about it, you will not be able to support him. You don't want to have him thinking that he is destined to have the disorder. Find out how to support a healthy future for him either way. Do your research now without scaring him. You can do it. You have a lot to deal with in your family...Perhaps this is an opportunity to increase your knowledge and coping skills so that you can have a brighter future.
