When you go to your orthodontist for treatment, you may be offered a number of options. Self-ligating braces are one of the newer advances. We demystify what they are and whether they are good for you or worth the money.

Orthodontic treatment is potentially life-changing treatment, as it can totally transform a person’s overall appearance and personality through his or her smile. Teeth that find themselves, in one way or another, out of position are moved and guided into their correct position in the jaw, offering patients both optimal esthetics and function.

Whe teeth are in incorrect positions, patients may even experience complications because of an inability to maintain good hygiene in spite of their best efforts.

When it comes to orthodontic treatment, many patients' minds are filled with questions about the various options available to them and the expenses involved. It is a treatment that takes a relatively long time to complete, and it is only natural that patients would like to explore all the available options. Basic knowledge about such options can help know what to discuss with their orthodontist and opt for whichever option best suits their needs.

Orthodontic treatment traditionally uses specialized attachments called brackets to move your teeth from their current position to their correct position. These attachments together are known as braces.

1. What are self-ligating braces?

Braces can be broadly divided into two parts depending on the type of metal or ceramic square (bracket) that is attached to your tooth at the start of the treatment.

Traditional braces are a more commonly used method which uses a rubber-band tie or a metal tie to attach the thin bendable metal wire to the bracket and ultimately apply pressure to the tooth and move it.

Self-ligating braces are another option. The term "ligate" means "to tie". Self-ligating brackets do not need an extra component to attach the metal wire to the bracket. They are similar to traditional braces in appearance. But they have "clips" or "doors" that secure the metal wire to the bracket, thus eliminating the need for rubber band ties. Self-ligating brackets are available in metal as well as polycarbonate or clear materials that can be chosen according to the patient’s needs after consulting the orthodontist.

2. Advantages of self-ligating braces

Maintaining good oral hygiene throughout the duration of orthodontic treatment is important, as it can help avoid problems like swollen and bleeding gums, and the decaying of teeth due to food getting stuck around the brackets and wires. Since there are no rubber-bands or metal ties attached to the wire with self-ligating braces, it is easier to maintain oral hygiene during the duration of the treatment, which helps in preventing secondary problems arising out of poor oral hygiene. However, proper brushing, regular flossing and use of a mouthwash are all advisable throughout the length of the treatment (and beyond).

There is less friction between the bracket and the wire, resulting in a faster and smoother movement of teeth, so faster overall treatment time. In certain cases, self-ligating braces may cut the treatment time by almost six months.

Self-ligating braces allow for less frequent appointments, making them more convenient for both patients and orthodontists. Also, the fact that there are no rubber-bands or ties to be attached during the appointment, can reduce the amount of time taken by the dentist during each appointment.

As there are no rubber-bands or metal ties, self-ligating braces are more comfortable to the lips and mouth. However, since the brackets are stuck on the tooth, there might be mild discomfort or irritation during the initial days of treatment. With time, though, this is not an issue with most patients.

3. Disadvantages of self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are available in clear/tooth-colored materials. However, there is no escaping the thin metal wire running along the brackets. Hence, for patients who are extremely conscious regarding their appearance during the course of the treatment, a complete metal-free look is not possible. For such patients who want an inconspicuous look during the course of the treatment, Invisalign or other clear retainers are a better option.

Like with traditional braces, proper oral hygiene is very important. There can be no substitute for proper brushing to prevent gum and decay problems associated with orthodontic treatment.

In certain cases where the hinges of the "doors" on the bracket do not close properly or in case the bracket comes off a tooth, it will have to be replaced.

4. Are self-ligating braces expensive?

Since orthodontic treatments are quite expensive compared to other dental treatments, it is but natural that the cost is important for patients looking to get their teeth corrected.

Self-ligating braces are more advanced compared to traditional braces. However, their prices are almost comparable to those of traditional braces in most cases. The total cost, however, depends on the degree of correction needed in your smile and the duration of the treatment.

5. Which cases are suitable for self-ligating braces?

Almost all types of tooth corrections can be done using self-ligating braces. However, your orthodontist is the best judge regarding which type of braces are best suited for your treatment.

Conclusion

With increased awareness of dental malocclusions, orthodontic treatment is becoming more and more popular with patients. Untreated, incorrectly placed teeth can lead to other problems like decayed teeth, receding gums, and other issues. It is necessary for the patient as well as the attending dentist to proactively diagnose misaligned teeth and treat them as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Patients should be made aware of various options available to them and help them make an informed decision about the most suitable treatment.
