Traveling can be exciting and fun. But it can also be stressful and leave you feeling under the weather. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to keep yourself healthy and stress free the next time you hit the road.

Whether you are heading off on vacation, business or visiting relatives for a holiday, traveling can be one of life’s greatest adventures. It can also be a headache. Regardless of whether you are traveling by plane or car, you may have a few obstacles come your way. But there are plenty of ways you can increase your chances of having a nice travel experience.

Maintaining Good Health On Your Travels

Nothing ruins a trip faster than becoming sick. But unfortunately it is not uncommon to catch a cold or develop traveler’s diarrhea during a vacation. In some cases, your immune system may not be at its strongest.  For example, traveling can be stressful, and stress can make you more susceptible to illness.

Traveling might also mean being around large crowds on tours and airplanes, which exposes you to a million germs. Additionally, some people tend to be on the go every minute and get a bit rundown while traveling. But there are many things you can do while traveling to stay healthy.

Bring hand sanitizer or disinfect wipes.

If you are flying, consider wiping germy areas, such as your tray table and armrest.

Use hand sanitizer after getting change, touching handrails and using ATMs.

Wash your hands. Nothing replaces the basics, and that means washing your hands frequently, especially before you eat.

Direct the overhead vent on the airplane downward instead of at your face. You’re not getting fresh air on a plane. The air from the vent can potentially have droplets from all the coughing and sneezing you hear on your flight.

Watch what you eat. Depending on where you are traveling, consider drinking only bottled water. Additionally, skip foods sold by street vendors and only eat foods, which are well-cooked.

Fitness and Nutrition On The Road

Staying healthy also means getting enough exercise.

While you may want a little break from your regular fitness routine, it is important to still stay active.

Just because you are on vacation does not mean you have to suddenly become a couch potato.

Many hotels have fitness centers where you can get a workout in at your convenience. Working out can help you sleep better, strengthen your immune system and de-stress after all the hassles of getting to your destination.

If you want a break from the gym, consider engaging in some outdoor activity. A vacation is a time to try new things and make fitness fun. So whether you play tennis, golf, hike or bike, get out and get moving.

Another great way to stay active while traveling is to take a walking tour.

You will get the chance to explore while getting some exercise. If you are more of the adventurous type, sign up for rock climbing lessons or paddle boarding.

Maintaining a relatively healthy diet is also a good idea while traveling. Although you may want to indulge a little, eating a lot of unhealthy, fatty, sugary or fried foods may leave you feeling uncomfortable. Stick to mostly healthy meals with a few treats.

Staying Sane While Traveling

Maintaining good health and preventing illness is essential while traveling. But keeping your sanity and your personal safety in mind is equally important. With a few precautions and a positive attitude, traveling can be stress and worry free.

Security Concerns

Security is always a concern when traveling. You may be in an unfamiliar location and become distracted, which leaves you vulnerable to becoming the victim of a crime.  Although you don’t want to ruin your travels by worrying about every little thing, keeping a few safety tips in mind is a good idea.

One of the most important things you can do is stay alert.

Keep your bag in your sight at all times. Also, don’t walk around with your head down staring at your cell phone and pay attention to your surrounding.

At your hotel, be sure you verify the identity of personnel before opening the door. Keep hotel doors locked and be observant in hotel parking lots. If you are traveling by cab, only use properly marked taxis, and lock your doors while driving.

Planning ahead is also a must. Determine what areas are high in crime and decide if it is still safe to travel there. In addition, use a navigation device and plan your route ahead of time to avoid getting lost.

Don’t take your most valuable possessions with you when you travel. The same thing goes for large sums of cash. Not only will you avoid the attention of thieves, but you don’t have to worry about losing something.

Keeping Stress At Bay

Traveling is supposed to be enjoyable. But flight delays, large crowds and unexpected mishaps can turn traveling into anything but a good time. But seeing the world can be unforgettable, so don’t let stress ruin your trip.

Get organized before you leave. Know where you packed everything. Double check that you have the essentials, such as cell phone, credit cards and passport. If you forget smaller items, try not to stress over it. You can always pick something up when you reach your destination.

Call and verify all your travel arrangements before you leave.

Make sure your flight is on time, and hotel reservations are confirmed. You are better off catching a mistake before you leave than once you arrive and are exhausted.

It is also important to get some rest before you leave. Try to avoid traveling when you are already tired. Traveling can be exhausting, even if you are only sitting for hours. You are more likely to handle stress better if you are well rested.

Bring books, music or something enjoyable to pass the time if you get delayed. If you are delayed on your travels, having something you like to do will make the situation seem less bleak.

Lastly, remember you cannot control everything. So do what you can to avoid travel problems, but realize things sometimes do not go as planned.

It can be frustrating, but keeping perspective can help.

If the unexpected happens and something goes wrong while you are traveling, try to be flexible and above all, stay calm.
