Hi, my name is jade, and i am a 13 year old girl and i had my tonsillectomy on saturday, this is my experiance so far, please read bottom paragraph for my questions and concerns, Thankyou.

After when i woke up from the Surgery:

woke up - felt quite abit of pain, was given a cup of water, took a sip, found it too painfull, so i put it down and went back for quik sleep.
Mum arrived, and brung a tuna sandwich, orange juice, and buiscuits. Found the pain was rather bad. Ate all the sandwhich, part from the crusts tried the orange juice but it was acidy and very painfull caused alot of stinging than i ate the buiscuits which wernt near as bad, and i ate all of them. I than went back to sleep and was kept 4 hours after my opperation inside the hospital, inbetween this time i asked the nurce for some medicine as the pain began to grow quite bad, and went to sleep.

As soon as i was about to be discharged, the nurse handed mum the discharge note and i felt a rush up in my head and my legs went, and i fainted. Nothing to worry about though as it was only the anesthetic, but the nurse had said to be safe we had better stay another hour or so, so we did and i again fell asleep.

Mum than woke me up and we left the hospital, i had to be helped into the car and down the ward as i still felt *faintish*.
We than got into the car and i was took to Mc'Donalds. The pain really got bad as i was eating, but i managed to eat all my fries, and at a quarter of my fillet'o'fish burger. It wasnt the fact i wasnt hungry or anything, it was the fact that the pain had gotten unbarable to eat anymore, but i obviously really wanted to eat my fish burger! i also had a drink to go with it of chocolate milkshake, this soothed my throught abit.
I than got home. This was when the pain had gotten really bad. I slept most of it of and had my calpol, but alls i wanted to do was sleep which i did and got lots of it too! i slept all of the rest of the day and had a packet of crips which was rather painfull, but the worse thing was the taste stayed in
my mouth.

I than went to sleep, and had my iburprofen which really helped me sleep through the night still with pain, but it didnt wake me up.
The following morning my throught was unbarable, i couldnt open my mouth, sneeze, cough, yawn or even talk. So I took my iburprofen in the morning, got a glass of water and lay down on the sofa with a cover and slept. litterally, all day. having about 1 hour power naps, i than began to eat some toast, which the doctor had convinced me to eat and was fine it did hurt me when i swollowed but it did anyway eating or not.

My mum than went to the shop and brought me back; a packet of Wostashire Sause crisps, a Ripple, and a can of coke. Not the best of foods after a tonsillectomy, but it works. I ate all of them fine, obviously i had the painn still, which happends if i swollow my spittle. But the only problem was with the Ripple is the chocolate stayed in my mouth and because the pain of me trying to swollow hurt anyway, i found it rather hard, also the crisps taste
i couldnt get out of my mouth, but i found that water helped.

Taking my meds at four hour periods each day was annoying me. Alls i wanted to do was sleep, but than for tea i had a chippy. just chips and gravy, but i found this nice because what helped me was that i mashed my chips and gravy together, this helped me because by doing this i wouldnt have to take as many gulps so that ment less pain mashing it up.

I than went to sleep, still with the pain their but again i found it easy to sleep and slept all through the night not being woke up by any pain.
The next day i woke up, my mouth tasted disgusting, my breath stunk, and alls i could taste was yesterdays crips. I brushed my teeth as normal and got a hot bath, this made me feel so relaxed and the steam made my nose less blocked up so i was able to breath nicely.

After that i than went down stairs, my little sister was back by now, that was the worst i needed, but atleast she had school so it wernt that bad. I went to sleep on the sofa, as i did from the start and grabbed myself a glass of water, my pain- exactly the same, only hurt when i swollowed, yawned, sneezed, moved to quikly. I than had toast, with jam. Which didnt hurt me as much as the first time i ate it, but it was one of the best things which i had eaten which didnt hurt my throught.

After breakfast i went sleep, and by the time i knew it mum had woken me up for my meds, and half an hour after i had my dinner, which consisted of- A meat+potato pie, and a twix. The meat and potato pie was fine, and funny enough the twix was, but unlike the ripple, it concluded with buiscuit
which i think is why its taste didnt stay in my mouth as much.

I than went on my laptop, looking at some usefull information on my tonsillectomy, im pretty glad i didnt do this before my opp, otherwise i would of backed out! Some many scary stories, well my opp went fine :), Most of you say not to take iburprofen or toast, well this is what my doctor had tolled me TO do.

Anyway, after that i had a kip, but the pain had got worse. I took my meds and everything, but for some reason it really hurt more when i swollowed, so i missed out tea, and went to bed.

The following morning i had woke up with ear ache, proper painfull. But the doctor had told me that this is normal, and so i too my meds and went back to sleep. they had worked a dream! Today i woke up and went downstairs, no breakfast this time, my throught was painfull, but i had my glass of water, and went to sleep again on the sofa, and i woke up to a bacon toastie with ketchup! which also was fine, but i woulve thought the ketchup would of stung because it was acidy just like the pure orange juice but it didnt.

For tea i had; burger, mash, gravy, sweetcorn. Which i enjoyed because i could mix it all together, cut up the burger, and pore on the cravy. This i really found easy to eat because again, it wasnt too many gulps.

I than got into bed, and went on my laptop which is what i am doing at this moment, but the only thing is, WHAT HAPPENDS NEXT? I need help! how long will it take me to recover till i am upp and well, not having pain when i swallow, sneeze, yawn, burp, or even when my throught just stops aching? I also have a stye, under my top right eyelid, but i had this before my opp, but it has gotten bigger, probably because of stress, but please any comments on what happends next, and how long it will take me to not feel any pain and be back to my normal self?

Thanks, Jade.
i had mine when i was 13 too. my throat hurt so much i couldnt eat solid food or salty foods all i could have was ice cream which was plain vanilla cause the other ones hurt my throat. i would recommend you dont have solid foods just eat jello or soup stuff thats mostly soft you should recover in 2-3 weeks. atleast thats what it took me!

Thankyou, this helped alot, seems like eating 'none' solid foods does sooth the pain!

Hi i'm 14 yrs old, I had my tonsils taken out 6 days ago. I haven't been doing to bad...well, until today. I have this awful taste in my mouth and I continuously spit up mucus (sometimes large brown globbs the similar to the yoke of an egg), I can't swallow anything today and have been taking Tylenol once every 5 hours--No big pain meds like Vikeden. The pain & taste are terrible, but i'm just so bord. I live in SoCal and play Waterpolo and all i want to do is go into the water, Which i can't. Does anyone know when the scabs will fall off--I have Junior Olympics coming up and I really need to get some more practice in. If anyone can help with the taste-mucus-or knows the recovery time please help.

Hello! I'm 13 and I recently got my tonsils removed 5 days ago. I'm also spitting up mucus so no need to worry, it's normal! It's a sign that the scabs are getting ready to come off soon. I have a concert to go to in a week and I'm scared I might not be able to! While I was looking for advise I'm glad I could give some. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Jade! I had my tonsils out last Tuesday. I was very nervous going in, as I was very stupid and read online before hand what was to be expected. Nonetheless, the surgery wasn't very painful, it was the recovery that was awful for me. When I woke up afterwards, I couldn't remember seeing some of my family members that were there, and I was so dizzy. I drank a lot of water while I was there, but before I left, I vomited a little. I was nervous the scabs were going to fall off. The ride home was okay, and as soon as I was home, I stayed on the couch for a good 3 days. I only got up to use the bathroom, or only once take a shower cause I felt disgusting. The first night I slept well but woke up the next morning in a lot of pain. My caregiver decided to wake me up the next night every two hours and give me water, but I was given Tylenol codeine with only a few bites of applesauce in my stomach, and I quickly woke up an hour later puking. After that I had to be hydrated every half hour, as I wasn't being consistent with drinking water. I woke up every two hours for about two nights to keep hydrated, and once my dad noticed I was feeling better and talking a little bit, he decided to wake me up every three hours. I'm currently going onto Day 6, and I'm unsure on if the scabs are starting to fall off. My throat still kills (A 5 on a 1-10 scale) but it's at least bearable, whereas the first few days it felt like somebody stuck a torch in the back of my mouth!

Here is my advice for anybody getting theirs out...

1. Drink plenty of water! It will hurt but as you drink more the pain will decrease.

2. Don't get out of bed or off the couch for a few days. And if you do, be careful. You will be dizzy.

3. Be sure to have something to write or text with. Have a spare notebook, or if you have a phone or tablet, purchase a note app if you don't already have one. It will hurt to speak, and I recommend not trying to do so for the first 24 hours. I did when I woke up after the operation and it did hurt a lot.

4. For the first 3-5 days, have cold soft foods. That will be before the scabs start to fall off. Once they do, slowly start to have room temperature foods until told otherwise.

5. Wait until after your Post-Op appointment to have solid foods. That way a doctor can fully asses that everything is alright and if it is safe for you to start having other foods. If they don't tell you or don't mention it, then ask.

Enjoy and have a speedy recovery!! :)

Hi Jade.
I am not like many of you and have yet to have my tonsils actually taken out. Anyway, some of these stories sound like the pain is a lot worse than shooting a shotgun at some flying discs and getting a bruise from the kickback. I know that was a weird thing to compare a tonsillectomy to but its the most pain I have had for a while. I have been getting strep throat since December of 2013 when I was 8 years of age. I still remember that first time like it was yesterday. The strep mainly jusy comes and goes like a mailman comes to deliever mail to your door. It is worse around fall and winter and gets better during spring and summer. My tonsils have been "disgusting" quoting my mom, but I have yet to actually see my "disgusting" tonsils. I am getting my tonsils taken out this tuesday. April 4th 2017. I have missed 18 days of school because of this "Disease Curer" in my throat and have had enough of it failing its main mission "to keep me healty" Every time I go to the pediatrician they do ask me "On a
scale of 1-5 how would you rate your pain?" Please know this does remind me of Baymax from Big Hero 6 and does make me smile. Anyway I do normally like to keep the pain at an all time low making it under a 3 because I don't want to be rushed to the hospital for an immidiate tonsillectomy that I am not ready for. I am having my procedure done early in the morning around 8:00am. As soon as I come home the normal throat hurting me will want to go in my room and play on my computer. I am afraid that wearing my headphones will make the ear pain worse and will also disable me talking to my online friends. I know that if I want to do this type of activity in a time like this I might seem like a kid meant for a mental hospital haha. I assure you I am a normal human being with the same goals as any other person. Get good grades, pass the 7th grade, etcetera. My dad does sometimes wake me up in the morning by showing me a video or two about something for school. This does wake me up and gives me energy to actually walk to my bathroom and do my basic stuff to get ready for school. However, discarding the video thing, I am worried that my spring break will
not be spent playing videogames, or talking to friends. Mainly sleeping, which I dislike doing but will like it occasionally when I need it. I am also afraid with the amount of pain meds
I will be taking that after the recovery of The Great Wall of Throatas attack, that I will be drugged up so bad I can barely stand up. I know my parents can assure me this will not happen, but I still have to prepare for the worst. I do wish to make a little recovery lesson/teaching that I can read during class to my fellow students and tell them what it's like to have your tonsils removed. I am never the center of attention believe me, its normally the people with the "good hair" which looks ugly if you think about it or the people that play basketball like they have been breaking ankles and doing layups since they came out of the womb. I don't know why I am telling personal stuff if I am supposed to be talking about tonsillectomies and what the procedure is like. I am suprised I actually just wrote like an entire essay about this with my big thumbs, a barely lit phone, and the urge to
Use the restroom. As I know you just said in your mind. "Too much information dude" but I don't care lol. Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope youngsters find this useful.

I'm 13 and I'm on day 9 of recovery. All I can say is that I'm hungry better yet starving. Today wasn't that bad but when I woke up I had a horrible earache and my dad gave me my medicine and a ice pack for my neck so it wouldn't hurt. For some reason one side will hurt and then some hours later the other side will hurt and the side that was hurting doesn't. I hate to eat cause nothing tastes good. It tastes disgusting. Now I'm just liking the taste of water. I wouldn't recommend any dairy products because they all taste gross and makes alooot of spit. I had a jello cup that was strawberry and that tasted good. The squeeze applesauce with the other fruit mixed in stings so I wouldn't recommend that. What does help is Diclofenac Sodium Tropical Gel 1%. It's like liquid ibuprofen in a gel form to rub on your neck. I'm going swimming in a little bit so I hope that my pain doesn't come back and all goes well.

My doctor said no dairy for first 24 hours then in the next 24 hours I can add them in if theyre soft. After that I can have soft foods until 10 days after and then i can slowly begin adjusting to my normal eating habits.
