I just found out what mine is.
It is Yeast infection. (Candida)  It is related to "Albuterol" use.  I never knew until this time when I had a nasty cold and I started using Albuterol and it came back again.  It is one of the well known side effects.
Good luck

so what are you doing for it.  what is that medication. Never heard of it.  mine is due to all the dental work done and my central nervous system. I just ignore it all best as I can.  thank you very much.

I have the same intense itchiness but only around the gum area where I had a root canal. According to the dentist, the nerves there are supposed to be dead from the root canal. I also resort to picking at it until it bleeds. I use those plastic toothpicks - one end has a tiny bottle brush while the other is just a hard pick, which provides more relief. I have also been to a gum specialist who prescribed cortisone gel. It didn't work and furthermore, it really dried out my mouth. It seems to be worse after eating dinner and I can't figure out the food connections, although vegetables such as broccoli seem to make it worse. For those who have mentioned "white spots" or candida, you may also want to investigate "lichenplanus" - an autoimmune disorder that can occur on the gums or other places.

Its amazing to read that so many other people are having this problem, because my dental hygienist and dentist looked at me like I was crazy when I first told them 6 months ago.  The itching in my gums started about 8 months ago, and the focal points of the itch are centered around the gum line of both my canines.  I have not been able to attribute this to any other symptom...like having a cold.  I have not had a cold since this started.

I went to the dentist today and he told me that I need to stop messing with my gums and itching them because it is damaging my tissue and causing gum recession.  I have a perfect dental record too...never any cavities and never any problems at all with gums or teeth.  Six months ago when I first reported this to my dentist he had me use a mild lemon mouth wash, which has provided temporary relief.

The onset of the itching seems to occur when I am dehydrated, and then it only gets worse from there no matter how much water i drink.  There is nothing else that I can connect it too.  My dentist also told me to use a toothpaste for sensitivity (e.g. sensodine) and stay away from anything that has "whitening" or added "scope" or anything.  I am going to try that and see if it helps.

Its interesting to read that some people have linked their itchiness to neurological disorders and stress, as well as sugar.  I do suffer from serious vertigo and stress, but other than that, I don't believe I have any neurological issues.  I also have a serious sweet tooth so I am giong to try and cut down on the sugar and see what happens. My dentsit also recommended going to an allergist to figure out if it is an allergy causing the itchiness.  I feel like that might be a little extreme, but I will keep it in the back of my mind.  I will defiitely keep checking back on this thread to see if anyone has found out anything different.

Lucky you. I wish mine would be diagnosed. I've also been told to use a very plain toothpaste etc. No change yet.

This is me!!! My gums and teeth are immaculate, but the itching is making me crazy. I have rubbed, poked, scrubbed, scratched, etc my gums until the recission is terrible. I have had a gum graft in those places to try to repair them but it did not help. It is mostly on the top and over the back three teeth on each side. The right side is worse. Dentist can't figure anything out... I use Q-tips dipped in hydrogen peroxide to rub the itchy places. I am ruining my gums but it is so awful. Putting ice on the spots gives very temporary relief. Mine isn't yeast, we tried the medication for that. I've changed toothpaste, I've tried mouthwash, no mouthwash, salt water, salt water and hydrogen peroxide mixture, glycerin for healing, aloe... I've even tried brushing my gums with liquid benedryl. I constantly have ulceration on one spot because it is the itchiest and I can't leave it alone.

This has been a problem for as long as I can remember... I've been allergy tested and don't have any allergies that would explain this problem.

I am at my wits end... I will keep looking for new suggestions!

Hello everybody, as everybody said "I am not alone"....I have the same problem but the itch is not constant-comes once every 2 months and the dentists find nothing. However, they prescribed me a cream to put on the gums and it is really working, it is stopping the itch just for a couple of hours. The name is INDEXTOL-in case you dont find it with the exact the same name the ingridients are : Oleandomicin, Dexametazon and Indomecin.

I hope that will help you as well...

I've now been told from an internal med doc that it's a reaction to eating fruits (particularly apples and the peel - apparently they're the worst culprit) and salads. He says he's seen this often. I do eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. 4x per day he wants me to rub baking soda into my gums then to rinse out with hydrogen peroxide. Have to kill the bacteria from the fruits and to keep doing it every day till it goes away. Trying it. I'm on my 4th day. Hopeful. Was VERY happy to hear that he's seen this often. He's my first. Usually the reaction from all doctors I've seen is that they've never heard of this at all.

I'm fascinated by this bizarre disorder. I am only 18 but the past few days my gums have itched uncontrollably. I broke skin for the first time today with a plastic fork I got during lunch. It's almost unbearable. The antihistamine idea seems pretty reasonable. I will do that if the itching occurs. It has happened a few times in the past but unlike most I'm still just a young adult... My story, however, is similar in the way that I have perfectly fine teeth No periodontal diseases or braces. My wisdom teeth are coming in [straight] though. Maybe that has something to do with it? The itching is the worst on the bottom row in the middle.

It could be allergy to the metal in crowns. I am getting all zircon crowns.  It also maybe my central nervous system and am having a tremendous amount of dental work done.

Hello all I understand what you are going through for i have the same problem.  There could be a couple of things going on.  One could be a yeast imbalance.  Look up and see how to do a spit test.  Another could be post nasal drip irritation. Sometimes allergy pills help and swishing your mouth out with pexiode calm it down. Nothing really last long. Or you could have rhinitis which is enviromental and dust, perfumes and etc. from the environment will get into your sinus cativaties and the post nasal drip will make your gums itch. The dentist couldn't explain my itch either. But an allergist diagnoise me with Rhinitis, even the cold weather or extreme heat will start the irriation. There may be some non drowsy allergy tablets that can help with the itch.  Or you can go another way and do a detox of heavy metals. (This you will have to do some research on) I am starting a yeast cleanse i will let you know if it helps.

What works for me is sticking an object in between my teeth nearest the itch. It sometimes makes the itch disappear, sometimes make it alleviate for ten minutes, give or take <20mins.

I also have experienced itchy gums for about 15 years. I can always tell I'm getting a cold because my gums begin to itch. The itching usually stops once the cold goes away. They also itch during exercise, especially running. It's usually my front 4 teeth in the front and luckily is not as severe as others, but definitely aggrivating! I find the yeast imbalance and fruit and sugar theories interesting and may try to cut out sugar. I am female, never had braces, great dental health, no gum disease, and not on any medications.

Referred my dentist to this site few months ago.  I don't know if he checked it out.  I will ask him when I get check up next time I go.  I have tried everything except an allergist.  Honestly this can drive anyone insane.  I have been reading a very good book "Cure tooth Decay" by Ramiel Nagel  Remineralize your teeth Naturally.

I've mentioned it to my dentist several times but it just gets ignored. I also did check with an allergist and was told that it's not allergy related. I know, it's awful and it's so frustrating. It's been 3 years for me now!
