I can't believe I finally found this thread and there doesn't seem to be any clear cause. Someone said it may be only women that get this. I am a guy and also have healthy teeth and gums. I've noticed a lot of people say they had braces. I did have them when I was younger also. I hope this thread starts going again and someone can find a way to stop this. It drives me crazy.

I've also had this problem since I was little, it comes and goes and it always drives me insane! I haven't had an episode in a very long time, but it's been itching like hell for the last couple of weeks:(( I remember that laser therapy used to make it go away, but that was a long time ago and I'm not sure anymore, I might try again..professional cleaning certainly didn't make any difference as I have one every six months and I had one a month ago which is when the itching started again! I read something on the internet recently and I now bought hydrogen peroxide to make mouth wash mixed with water, will see how it works...I hope one day dentists will know more about it and will give us some real solution....one thing is for sure the more I irritate it the more it itches, but I can't help it...

I just wanted to say that hydrogen peroxide made the itching much better - my gums around the itching teeth were so sore from scratching, but still so itchy - when I put the hydrogen peroxide it immediately burned and numbed the place and I don't feel itching any more - it does make the area around this gum go white for a bit, because the damaged tissue turns into dead tissue due to the chemical reaction, but that gets betters after half an hour or so. Colgate has a special medicated mouthwash containing this- it's called colgate peroxyl. I also bought the hydrogen peroxide in a bottle and mixed it with water, it works in the same way it just doesn't taste so good. This is by far the best relief from mouthwash I have ever had. I hope it will help in the future too..

I think the itch must be a symptom of Periodontitis: it can start at very early age and go on for years and it's not always easy to diagnose - since we all try to keep a good oral hygiene and there is so much treatment and herbs and medicines available comparing to how things were in the past that usually means that we keep it under control but the itch comes and goes as the process of the gum separating from the tooth still goes on, your dentist may say you have healthy gums, but this disease is not always obvious - just have to make sure you look after your gums, read about different treatments, herbs and ways to deal with it and that should help - stuff that keeps the gums tight and healthy, this is especially true about the front lower teeth as in my case, the gum damage that is visible is not from scratching it is from the disease and what it does to the gums

Read in article that said just brush you tooth with water and your own saliva. It is better for your gums and teeth.
Toothpastes and mouthwashes have too many chemicals that might actually be harming your gums and teeth. Use waterpiks better than flossing. I am going to give that a try.

Dartagnan,
The acupuncturist did not charge me for the needles he let me take home. He actually gave me a little package of 4 or 5 of them. He initially tried the needles outside of my mouth (on my chin about where it matches up with the itchy part of my gum) and in a bunch of other places. He even pushed it wayyyyyyyyyyy in deep so it went thru my chin/skin and into my gums. It did not hit the right spot. Then he let me insert a needle into the gum while he watched. I just copied the way he had sort of tapped it into me when he inserted other needles, so I tapped it (like gentle hammering) it until it got really deep into my gum. I was able to get it to a much more specific spot. At one point I was able to "hammer" it right thru the actual itchy spot (doesn't that sound heavenly?! Those of you who suffer with this know that I am dead serious!) and despite the moment of intense pain simultaneous to relief, it actually made the itch suddenly disappear completely. Unfortunately, it was not permanent. Within a few weeks, the itch returned. I'm on my last needle today. They are so thin that as deep as I pound them in and then grind them around inside my gum, they bend and become unusable. But they do give the most relief I've gotten thus far!

I usually only get really itchy gums after intense exercise, especially running. It is mostly the top front teeth area and it itches so intensely. I'm glad they don't itch all the time, I can't stand it as it is. I have had this problem for as long as I can remember. With this many people having the same problem it surprises me that there is no explanation out there.

wow, I thought I was the only one. Its funny, sometimes we think that something that we might feel is unique to us, but it really isnt, lol. The itchy feeling on my gums bothers me but what bothered me the most was that it felt really great to put pressure on my gums to relieve it. When I say great, I mean the sensation that you get from pressing is bordering on pleasure that sometimes I get carried away and I know this isnt good for my gums. I know that sounds really weird and kinda sick, but it does feel that way. I felt weird about it for the longest time, Im glad Im not the only one that has this problem. Actually, I would feel the itchy feeling especially when Im dehydrated.

My gums itch as well, but it is part of a series of accompanying symptoms; itchy, dry nose, sinus irritation, clenching teeth, headache.

It happens most during the fall, especially when our dry north wind blows. Once it starts I know I am in for the irritation for days.

I find taking antihistamines helps...itching is often a histamine reaction to something your body does not like.

Dump your fluoride toothpaste, too. Once I quit using anything with fluoride in it, my gums started feeling better and my teeth stay cleaner longer. Coral White is a good brand and Tom's is too.

But above all, the antihistamine seems to bring quick relief...and quit scratching! I know it's hard (I do the same thing to the inside of my nostrils--pretty soon they bleed and can get infected) but the ensuing bacterial infections are even worse!

This is pretty amazing. My gums have consistently gotten itchier in the last few weeks and I am ready to brush my teeth with barbed wire if only for the temporary relief. I had no idea that other people had this problem. I was sure that I had periodontal disease and was going to lose my teeth soon. Truth be told, I am 46yrs old and I have had one cavity in my life. I just had my last check up and cleaning a few weeks ago and although I have some recession, it is not serious. The clincher here is that I have currently been fighting a sinus infection and now that I know there is a possible correlation, going forward I will know. I have had this itching flare up numerous times in the last few years but never knew that that the two could be related. Thank you for the information.

Itchy gums is usually associated with some form of drug addiction. Talk to a psychologist about your particular situation, and mention any and all medications that may have caused the onset, including any known medication of your parents, particularly your mother.

It also has a lot to do with your sinuses.
