I am grateful to find this thread. My daughter is 6 and has also been itching for months! When my husband figured out what this may be we checked her stool with flashlight found worms. Then like clock work she woke last night got the flashlight and there they were... This had been driving me crazy! To those who wonder about sexual abuse, be careful. All chidren will pick or play with themselves it natural. As the saying goes...because it is there. Look for other symptoms before going there! Pinworm is more common than we know and listen to your kids! I hate hearing in this day an age we are still telling kids "It is all in your head" The count on us to help them. A doctor told me my older daugher was not ill it was depression. I changed doctor only to find out she was exposed to black mold and suffered from vertigo and lost 70% of her hearing. She was treated and happy.

hi there,i just wanted to say my daughter has the same thing,im glad im not alone, she has had this weird pain on and off since she was 3-4 years old and she is now coming up to 8.I have been to the doctors numerous of times for urine infection checks, and swab samples and everything came back fine all the time, but yet about once, twice a month or sometimes if its bad afew times a week she wakes up,only at night, with what i can describe as sharp sudden pains just inside her vagina, she wriggles and crys and i do totally beleive the pain is there as it makes her so upset,

i try to give her plain water to drink to help flush any germs out that maybe there, even though the doctors says there isnt,i give her something to take her mind off the pain like her ds or tv,but nothing really works,.The pain can last from a few hours to all night, then in the morning nothing, she is fine and happy!!she also has a lot of growing pains in her legs ,i am hoping she will eventually one day grow out of it,but at the moment its not nice watching her cry in pain and there is nothing i can do about it,

i dont use fragrenced soaps in her baths, and i try to make sure she is clean down there ,her skin around her vagina is not sore,i cannot see anything wrong, but the pain she decribes is just inside,if anyone finds a clue/cure or diagnoses please post it

My daughter 5 too has had this problem on and off for about the past 6 months, the symptoms are like you all describe she wakes up screaming about her bum hurting (meaning her vagina) seems to be just on the inside and appears like a burning type pain but does sound very sore.  I too feel terrible as I have been thinking she is doing it just to get attention as she is a bit of a drama queen and very sensitive, I have also wondered if it may be a bit psycho psymatic as she can be a little anxious at times.  I have treated with thread worm pills tonight so will let you know if this helps or not.  Poor Girls

Our daughter suffered identical symptoms to what is described in this thread.  We treated for worms to no avail.
Finally, we took her off Gluten, and it seems to have made quite a difference.  She has only awakened twice in several months, with only minor pain, and she went back to bed quickly.
The real test is to slowly re-introduce Gluten, but at this point (she is 10) we are all happy that she gets proper rest, and will continue Gluten free for a while longer.

I am now 54, but I too went through these issues, I used to get shooting pains and burning sensations inside my vagina starting at the age of 5, I would complain to mom, but it would be during da day, and she would undress me and put me under a fan with my leg spread open, it would help, but I quit complaining because I didn't like laying in bed nude, the fan would feel good, but I was unconfortable, I never told mom that I felt unconfortable because poor mom, she did what she could, didn't have money to go to the doctor.  the pain occurred at all times, especially during the day or evening.  I was recently believing that maybe I had been raped or something because i never heard of this from anyone before now, because I can't forget the horrible pain it caused me till this day.  It eventually went away, but even during all these yrs I get them once in a great, great while, but after 2 preganancies and 3 births (twins) I just deal with it, it isn't as bad as before, but I have a very, very dry vaginal area and always have, and all these years very very itchy, several yeast infections, so please get ur girls checked to see maybe dryness is causing this pain.  I am very curious to know if some girls are dry and maybe can get help with that early in her years..Please keep me posted..  Good luck and God bless all of you.

My 4 year old pain started out as an itch. Just last week, it advanced into pain. I feel so sorry for my baby. I am delighted to have stumbled across this website to find some causes. I am anxious to get up this morning to get her to her pediatrician. Thanks to all!

NATURAL REMEDY FOR VAGINAL STINGING IN GIRLS; My 10 year old has complained about vaginal stinging every now and again for 4 years.  She mainly experiences the stinging at night.  I ensure she is wearing clean underwear, wash between her legs, then wash her down with vinegar or apply the vinegar using cotton wool.   If she is worried about vinegar stinging then I let her pour the vinegar or dab herself with the cotton wool so she remains in control.  I have never known the vinegar to sting but she seems to forget this.  Recently, she has got to the where she treats herself.  God bless her.  The vinegar seems to sooth her immediately.  I decided to use vinegar as it is a natural remedy against urine infections, but I use salty water if vinegar is not available.  I also try to encourage her to drink cranberry juice regularly, since she is prone to this irritation.  And I only allow her showers, as she seems quite sensitive to irritation.  However, I do feel that it may be resulting from her failing to clean herself thoroughly after 'a number 2', but am not certain.

Last night my daughter was screaming in pain because her vagina and butt were itching. I didn't know what it could be. Dad's usually don't! I hit the internet and found this site and at least knew I wasn't alone... Long story short and several web searches later I found something about PINWORMS! I checked and found a worm in action!!!

We are getting her checked by the doctor, but I was blown away after reading several articles about them at how common they are. 1 in 10 Americans are affected! Especially 5 - 10 year olds!!! They are also present in all socioeconomic levels and races, so no one is immune. I was also a little creeped out about how easily they are spread. Good luck to all of you and I hope this helps at least someone.

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has taken the time to post on here.
You have helped me find the problem with my daughter; She had been getting pain in the vagina most nights for months and I had no idea what it was. The doctor said it was probably cystitis and sent her home with antibiotics. They didn't work and then I found this conversation on here about threadworms!
I checked her and there they were! I couldn't believe it! Had never seen the blighters before so it was an experience! She has had Ovex tonight to get rid of them so fingers crossed.

All I can say is, if your child is complaining of this sort of pain, PLEASE don't ignore them..Check for worms!

Oh, also don't forget to stick all towels, bedding etc. on a hot wash to get rid of eggs to prevent reinfection!!

Thanks again xx

I too am grateful for this discussion topic.  My 8 year old daughter has complained of anal pain, along with "front bottom" pain, although it was often hard to distinguish exactly where the pain was.  It would only occur in the early evening or later at night but often just after she had opened her bowels, so I thought it might have been related to constipation, although she denied finding it hard to evacuate her bowels.  The pain would be present for about two days in a row and then would just disappear for a week or two, kind of confirming the idea of constipation in my head.  However, when the pain is present she is in such obvious discomfort and is unable to find a comfortable position, either laying or sitting, but tells me it settles down after a while.  She wakes in the night calling out to me and just says "my bottom, it's my bottom!"....I started to think there was something terribly wrong or perhaps she had haemorrhoids. This has gone on for months now and last night I had decided that I should take her to a doctor but before that  I did some research on "Dr Internet" and discovered this site.

The threadworm (pinworm) possibility had entered my mind but on checking I didn't see any evidence, and we had de-wormed about six months earlier.  I checked her before she went to bed last night and there was absolutely no evidence of worms.  I then did some more reading on line and decided to check her while she was sleeping as she was obviously in distress still, being very restless in her bed (or my bed as she was sharing with me because of the pain).  To my surprise and horror, after moving her into a position and using a torch to check her anus, I found a lot of threadworms!! They were so active and there must have been thirty or more.  As horrible as it sounds, it is such a relief to find the cause.  Today we have taken the necessary medication and I will repeat this in  a couple of weeks and hopefully it will be the end of our problem.

I'm writing this to perhaps encourage people to de-worm your child (and the rest of the family), even if you haven't found the worms, as I'm sure this has been the cause of her problems from the beginning.

When I look back, she has had bad sleep patters for about six months and has looked tired quite often.  She also is a very thin child at the best of times but has looked even thinner recently....not sure if worms are responsible for this but I did read somewhere that they can cause malabsorption of food and she has been eating more than usual too.

I read on the medication it takes a few days for the worms to die so I expect a couple more rough nights but hopefully that is all.  Re-infection is very possible, hence, we will be a household that de-worms every couple of months I think.

I hope this is helpful to someone.  I'll post again in a month or so to report whether all symptoms have gone.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to write to this site...it's been enormously helpful.

Cheers,
Kylie

To all of you MUMs out there... i would love to share our experiences also, my oldest daughter is 9 and youngest is 4. my oldest started having this frustrating pain that we cannot cure at the age of 4?... we have no answer.. we have been to Dr's but we also felt bad as we felt it was all in the MIND... after reading these comments left by you out there as hard as it sounds but thank god there are others!.... what we have found helpes is running the bath and putting bicarb soda (baking soda) in the bath also as it helps neutralise the pH in the water... or this could have just been a mind over matter thing for us we are not sure.. but one thing is certain I WANT A CURE! now that i also know that there are other little girls or even does this happen to little boys??.. I WANT SOMETHING DONE!!... it is not fair feeling like a incompitent parent not being able to help or take the pain away! i love my kids to bits and there is nothing worse then seeing them rithing in pain.

i wonder if this should be put more to the media??? iv never heard of it happening to SOOOOO many others, why has nothing been done before?...

please all of you out there if you know more keep posting !!! the more people that voice this horrible and ever frustrating pain in our kids maybe something will be heard and something done!

So happy to have found this forum. Did not think this problem was as common as it seems. My daughter is 7 and has been having the same problems on and off since she was in nappies. Always at night she would wake up around 11pm clutching at her genitals and its awful seeing her like that because nothing soothes her. It only goes on for about half an hour then shes back to sleep to wake up in the morning as if nothing has happened. She has had worms in the past but always prsented with anal itching. I have noticed her itching her vagina on occasion during the day but nothing that really bothers her. Seen a few doctors and had urine tests that came back normal and one said they could'nt think what it could be. Today the doctor gave her cream for thrush as she was a bit red but when she has these problems it only occurs once in a period of a few months so dont understand how it will be thrush but i suppose i will just plod on. I hope people find the answers they are looking for as well as me.
