My daughter has been waking up crying in pain, grinding her teeth...everything you all have mentioned. I have read all of your comments and checked out alot of information. What I have found with my daughter is that she has pinworms. What I did was this,, when she woke up crying I decided to look at her anus, I did not turn on the lights but got a small flash light and watch and to my surprise I saw it! A thin white worm creeping out of her anus. From what I have read, I understand that pinworms are common expecially in children. We have contacted the Doctor and we are starting her on medicne tonight.
Just like all of you my daughter was fine during the day but at night usually between the hours of 10:30 on till sometimes 1am she would wake up crying in pain. Next time your child wakes up crying because she is in pain try looking at her anus, sounds mean and cruel but I suggest you do it because more than likely that is what the problem is.

My daughter has had these pains from the age of 1 and is nearly 5 now, unfortunately treating for worms did not help her and each time i would try peeking and watching praying i would see something
She was eventually diagnosed with atrophic vulvitus with labial adhesions caused by a lack of hormones so now she uses gynest cream and it has helped her so much, we are trying to get a balance with how much treatment she needs, but when she has an attack she has codeine which eases the pains so she can sleep. We are told she will need this treatment until puberty until her hormones take over. I'm just glad eventually we got some answers as we could not see her go through this level of pain any longer and as the doctor said to us a child of this agee could not 'fake' pain of this level.

I suffered from recurring stinging sensations in the vagina, which would flare particularly badly at night, that would be so bad they would immobilize me. My mom would try putting me in a warm bath, and while that would relieve the pain a little it did nothing to fix the issue.
I never asked her what it was exactly, but I remember at one point the pediatrician told her to have me put an anti-fungal cream (we used Lotramin) on and around the vagina. While I would still have the issue come back from time to time, using the cream really helped to take care of each individual case. I'm not sure what the cause was, and when I hit puberty at around age 16 (when I had my first period) the issue stopped and never occurred again.
So, might be worth asking the doctor about possible fungal causes? I'd definitely do that before using any kind of medicated creams, etc, of course.
Hope this is of use to someone.

All of this sounds like spiritual attacks. Do like the old people did. Say a bible story each night, pray asking for protection, and wrap them up in bed. Do not live one dimensional when we are three dimensional beings. Take care of the physical, mental and spiritual aspect of our lives. Do not think all our answers are physical. Our girls are the mothers of tomorrow let us give them a wholesome life.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe I have found this site! My daughter started experiencing exactly this when she was about 3. It occurs every few months and always at night. Sometimes bedtime, sometimes early hours. It's only as she's got older, she's nearly 9, that she has been able to explain what the pain is.
When she was little I thought it was an external soreness and just bathed her ands smothered her in nappy cream, but now I realise its up inside. She tells me it feels like a hot stinging needle. The pain comes on so quickly it's unbelievable. I have taken her to the doctors who haven't got a clue. She's had her urine tested for infection and had an ultrasound. All comes back clear thank goodness. But we were at a loss as to what it was.
Until tonight I had diagnosed acidic fruit and drinks. It always occurs when she has drunk fresh juices or eaten fruit such as pineapple. She is a huge water drinker so i cut out all the acidic fruit. But tonight at 8pm she started. She had eaten a chewy thing earlier, one of those compacted fruit things which is supposed to be like eating fruit but looks like a chewy bar - and it was orange. She's been in agony. Before now I have had the symptoms under control within half hour. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen and a hot water bottle down there. I watch her visibly relax over half hour or so. Then it's back to bed and asleep. But tonight was so sad to see. She was writhing around for nearly 2 hours. Holding herself, pulling her legs up together, crying, trying not to scream out. Gripping me and sobbing. Eventually she got a rubber toy and squeezed it so hard like a stress ball. Poor baby. And I feel so helpless. As the 2 hours passed I watched the medication take effect and she calmed and relaxed.
So now it's midnight and she's been asleep for a while......and I've discovered you all!
If only I had known this forum existed before now. I popped up to her room and asked her to have a wee a while ago and peered up her bottom! Lovely!! Nothing there but the bathroom light was on so I couldn't look for worms as they would have fled from the light! I will buy some tablets tomorrow, anythings worth trying. But because she only gets this every few months I may not know for ages if this was the problem. I wonder if I'll see any little blight ears in the toilet. I hope so because then we may have found the route cause.
our daughter too is a drama queen and we ignore a lot, but you cannot ignore this pain. You have to see it to believe it. Not even the best little actress could produce pain symptoms like this. All these poor little girls all over the worlds and no one able to help. We will!!
I look forward to reading more posts where we get these symptoms sorted out.

I have had this with my daughter too. She started with these pains aged 5, she's now 9. Her story is very similar to many of yours, numerous midnight trips to A&E, she was always given antibiotics and told it was a urine infection, despite never having any symptoms. The gp just kept prescribing paracetamol, which doesn't touch her. One dr said she was attention seeking, which we initially thought, or making the pain seem worse than it was, although it was waking her each time. Today we saw a consultant who specialises in paediatric gynaecology, straight wayward she found threadworm. I've looked countless times, but not as in depth, so she's had some medication today, a once only dose,so hoping it works, as cant go on with sleepless nights every month or so for any of us!

For us, it was thread worms. Gross - but amazingly empowering, because any answer is good as it's the first step. I couldn't believe that they couldn't diagnose it for us - but just check yourself. In the night, head torch, courage. then google the treatment if you see anything. Good luck!

I first discovered this forum about midnight about 2 years ago while worrying and upset for my then 5-year-old daughter whose pain seemed excruciating and for whom I could do so little. I had been both relieved and horrified to find so many other little girls out there suffering like ours, in seemingly random nightly attacks but obviously agonising and all so similar in descriptions of it being like a knife but with little ways of easing the pain.
I was I believe the first to post pinworm/threadworms as the likely cause because I was, like so many of you, so happy to discover it was something so simple and I was so elated as I shared the angst you were all feeling.
Although I have never been able to actually see the worms on her, I did find little white specks in her back passage while she was sleeping and also thread-like things in her faeces after treatment.
I thought I would tell you all that two years on from my original post ("guest") and my daughter has been pretty much attack-free. I think there was only one other occasion and the first thing I did was treat my daughter again for worms and there has been nothing since. I am so so so relieved and feel the pain you are all going through here and so I hope in your cases it is also as simple as a worm treatment and your darling girls can again sleep peacefully with no more horrid pain.
There is something comforting in a problem shared and knowing we are all working together to find an answer.

MAYBE A FISSURE: First of all, I want to thank all of you who have posted. My 10-year old daughter started having similar pains in April of this year. From this site, I found that many of your daughters received relief from dewormers. So, I tried dewormers with my daughter, but unfortunately the pain didn't stop.
My daughter's pain began in 7 months ago, in April. It started as a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). But, it kept recurring: she had the urgency to urinate, but couldn't urinate when she went to the bathroom; it burned when she urinated; and her genitalia throbbed and stung. The doctors kept assuring me it was a UTI and prescribed antibiotics. After the first time, the results for a UTI were negative. So, after the second time, I did not use antibiotics until AFTER the results were in. After a while, it became clear that my daughter did not have a UTI and the ER and primary care doctors didn't have a clue what was going on with my child.
About 6 weeks ago, my daughter's pain increased and it went on all day. When I asked her to point to where she was hurting, it was the area at the back of her hymen down through the beginning of the skin between the vagina and the anus. Her pain was so severe that she had days when she couldn't sit up, walk, or even close her legs! I took her to many doctors including GYNs. One GYN thought she had Interstitial Cystitis (IC), a painful bladder condition that results when the lining of the bladder wall develops small cracks. Because the bladder sits immediately above the genitalia, the nerves from the bladder send pain down into the genital area. My daughter received three treatments for IC. Her bladder was drained and a saline based medicine was inserted through her urethra into her bladder. After the third treatment, she was in such severe pain, that she couldn't walk or close her legs for a week! She had the treatment on a Monday, she was so sick, I let her sleep all day Tuesday, but the rest of the week I took her in to see doctors. During the week, she had an ultrasound and an x-ray. Finally, Friday, we saw our third GYN. She diagnosed my daughter with having a fissure. She pointed out the fissure to me. It was a small line. It looked like a small stretch mark or or a crease in the skin like the line that runs from the side of your nose down past the corner of your mouth. But, the line was tiny: maybe a quarter-of-an-inch long. The fissure was located just below her vagina on the skin between the vagina and the anus.
A fissure occurs when two parts of the body grow at different speeds. Fissures are EXTREMELY painful because the skin is literally ripping because of the discrepancy of the growth. Because the skin is ripped, it hurts when my daughter urinates. The throbbing and stinging pain results from the skin ripping. I'm assuming that because of the size of the fissure, no one else saw it. I looked on several occasions, both her primary care doctors looked, as well as a GYN--in addition to the one who finally saw it. To soothe the pain, you have to lubricate the area. The doctor gave my daughter a prescription for Premarin (a low dose estrogen). It helped her. But, the thing that has seemed to help her most and quickly is olive oil. I prefer to use the olive oil because it doesn't have the side affects that can be associated the the hormone, estrogen. In addition, I can use enough olive oil to totally cover the area between her vagina and anus. I do not heat the oil, I just clean her and place a light covering of the oil on the area. With the Premarin, I was supposed to use just a pea sized amount. So, I was really careful in the amount I used.
I pray that my daughter's story will help someone else help their daughter.
