My question to all of you women who have posted your problem with the abdominal pain. Where you experienceing the cramps and pain around the time of your period, and just had no bleeding? I've only had my first depo shot, and I have had my period once. I am now starting with the cramping, but its around the time of my period. Im exausted at the end of the day, but I really think its too early in the proccess to start to experience those types of effects. Im no doctor, but I feel like I have an excuse for every side effect I am having. I do have to say though, you all have scared me a little bit. I am seriously thinking of what I should do!

I had my first (will be my ONLY) Depo shot about a month ago, and for the last week I have had intense nausea every night particularly after eating dinner (and it's getting worse each night) as well as abdominal pain. My (well, not any more) provider LIED to me when I asked about possible side effects of the shot (before getting it) - she told me that the ONLY POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS were irregular bleeding and completely reversible bone density loss with long-term use. Since I got the shot I have also had mood swings with depression, slightly more hair loss than normal, a 3-week period (and now I'm bleeding again a week later), headaches for the first 2 weeks, eyes so dry I had to buy glasses because I can no longer wear my contacts, daily cramps, and my anxiety has gotten much worse.

If you are cautious enough to be researching this before getting the shot - PLEASE DON'T GET IT! I had nausea on 4 different BC pills, which is why Depo was brought up in the first place. The nausea I have now is the same, if not WORSE. I had an ultrasound on which nothing showed up as a cause of the abdominal pain. I'm so incredibly sick of getting no answers from doctors who don't want to be responsible or work hard to help their patients.

I am miserable and I went so far as to email a few attorneys to see if I could get compensation for being lied to about all this, or at least get my former provider's reputation ruined, but none of them were interested in helping. She works in Tempe, AZ and her name is Kristin Branche. Do not trust her!

I got my 1st depo shot in August 1995 at the age of 26 after the birth of my only child. In May of 1996 I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). My Dr told me it was ok to take this birth control indefinitely. I went off the shot in 2004. I tried for years to get pregnant again, but was unable to.When I was 30, my bone density scan came back showing I had the same density as a 65 yr old. I am now 41 and in full menopause per my doctor. I have suffered with severe diahhrea everyday, and I truly believe it was caused by the depo shot. I wish there was enough people to start a class action lawsuit against the maker of this drug. I would gladly have my period everyday for a year if my IBS would go away. This "medication" should be banned - and doctors who prescribed it should have immediately stopped giving the injections once the new ruling came out that it should only be used for 2 years. >;)

Hello. Same "Guest" here from earlier post (had only one shot from nurse practitioner Kristen Branche after being lied to, posted on 5/1/10).

Just an update.

Around the time that I was due for a second shot, my continuous bleeding stopped (had been bleeding for about 2 months nonstop). It stopped for almost an entire month. Then it started up again, and I had hope that I was having a normal period. Unfortunately, I've been bleeding now for 2.5 weeks (lightly, sometimes just dark spotting, but bleeding nonetheless). I've read that this happened to other women, so if anyone out there has input about how long this phase of bleeding has lasted, please respond. I can't stand not knowing what is happening in my body and have no clue what to expect. I hope I don't bleed for months on end like before.

This shot has caused (so far) nearly 5 months of misery. I still have crazy mood swings and my hair hasn't stopped coming out - it's really thinning now. I feel like I should give up hope of ever having children. No attorneys would respond to my pleas for help.

I've been getting the depo injection for just over a year now, shortly after having my little girl, shes 18 months old now, since then ive had terrible stomach cramps, i feel nauseas every day and get really bad heartburn, im constantly exhausted, im constantly breathless and feel so weak i hate even getting out of bed, im only 19 for gods sake. Ive also gained quite a bit of weight, i was slimmer just after i gave birth but now ive gained over 2 stone, is this from the depo? i missed my last injection and was told i have to go back in 2 weeks to get it after ive done a pregnancy test, i think ive changed my mind about going back now and think ill just leave it, i dont think its worth it, can anyone who stopped the depo tell me if it gets better after you stop getting it? do the mood swings and stomach cramps eventually stop? also any advice on losing the weight woulld be great and any advice on what contraception to get now?

So, I'd just like to say that I feel really bad for the people who started on depo a while ago before some of these side effects were known and REALLY bad for the people whos doctor didn't tell them all the side effects but really anyone who's started recently- you should've done the research YOURSELF before getting on a medication. Look online and all these side effects are listed there for you plus your doctor SHOULD give you papers about it before you got the shot. You should never take any kind of medication without all the facts and even the people who took it early on when it first came out- you should know not to take a completely new medication. It's never a good idea. I just think it's mostly ignorant people who have gotten on here acting like they didn't know any of it was going to happen when they should have done the research themselves before just getting a shot. I have gotten 2 shots of depo and I did bleed for a while after the first one (which is a normal side effect) and a week or two after I have a touchy stomach (also a normal side effect) but I knew that would happen when I decided on it so really I have no problem with it because it's an effective birth control and I like not having to remember to take it every day. Plus now my periods gone so I love that for now since I'm only 18 and don't plan on having kids for a while. It seems like people who have the most trouble are people over and around the age of 30 and those who obviously didn't do research and find out that you need to take calcium or you can end up with problems. That's you're own fault. Sorry to be rude but it's true. Do your research before you take any kind of meds. If you don't like the side effects, don't take it. End of story.

P.S. Gasteoparesis has nothing to do with the depo shot. My mother (who doesn't have diabetes and isn't really all that old) has it and it's when your stomach doesn't digest food correctly so I'm not sure why there's a huge rant about it on here because chances are it has nothing to do with depo. Plus, it IS painful on your stomach so maybe you need a new doctor if he's telling you it's not.

so i am currently on my second depo shot and at first i absolutely loved it! no periods and no weight gain (and im already a bigger girl) and everything was great. But then i started getting these horrible stomach pains every once in a while and i would get these bad headaches and i would get dizzy, and after reading this im sure its from the depo because i have been to the doctors various times and nothings wrong i also noticed i am a bit more moody. What i am worried about is that i am 18 years old and this is really the only birth control i can use for different reasons i cant even use a condom so i don't know if i should stay on it or not. It worries me.... i have alot of thinking to do because i definitely want kids just not now!

I had also recently also started on depo, and suffering with severe abdominal pain to the point I can't even move or walk. It's nice not having a period but I rather get one and feel normal than go through this horrible pain. I also haven't been getting in the mood for sex, and mood swings. Depo shot it's not for me.

Hi, I've been on the Depo shot for 3 months now, my next due date is in 2 weeks. In the beginning when I first got on it, I experienced HEAVY mood changes, every little thing pissed me off or upset me.. I'd sometimes cry for NO reason, or be angry furious for nothing. I did get violence but somehow I NOW managed to control it. I hit my fiance in the face twice, which scared me sh*tless. I felt like a devil took over me. But now that doesn't happen anymore. He and I both think it's better for the both of us if I got on some other birth control method. When I first got on it.. the sex felt diffrent for a good while, but my sex drive is crazy now!!! I read about the patch? I think maybe that might be a little better than depo.. I'm 16.. and I'm NOT trying to get pregnant.

I had my first shot in december was totally okay with it loved every thing about it and then got my second shot the first of march and now i get nothing but severe lower abdominal pain. I was wondering if it could be the shot so came on here to find out it probably is! I will definitely get off the shot, i started birth control in the first place to calm my period cramps and now its just nothing but period cramps every day of the week! get them at least once in the morning and at least once at night!

Hi. I have now been off depo for a year. I was  taking it for several years to stop my horrible cramping and because I was sexually active. I started the shot @ 15 and I am now 24. It stopped my periods right away and have only had 2 since I have now been off. It actually took me over a year and some months to start ovulating again. I have noticed that being off of it now for quite sometime that I have developed some kind of Illness. I suffer from severe stomach cramps, strong acid in the stomach, shock like pains in the belly and near my navel. And just last week I noticed a hard lump near my navel as well.  I've had a big decease in energy I'm always in pain especially in my lower back. I also still am suffering with intestinal inflammation that keeps reoccurring. Even After taking anti inflammitories for the last few months. I suffer everyday with severe pain that leaves me trapped in my own house and unable to sometimes do regular chores etc as I am sore and exhausted. I have been seeing a gastro dr and we have run several tests with normal results besides the inflammation that continues. I was told that I have an anxiety issue that tends to make my symptoms worse with Stress or excitement. To where I start to get hot flashes and am now even puking in the mornings. I have never had anxiety issues etc and I believe that the long term Use of the depo has complicated my life drastically. I have many other side effects that would effect the normal person taking the shot but mine seem to be doing the opposite. To where my body became so used to it that I believe it has  like a withdrawal kinda effect. I have poor balance issues now and I find my speech is slurring a lot. I don't know if my gastro issues are caused by the effects of the depo but I do know that some of the down side effects have now further worsened my issues. I do not recommend taking it for years at a time ladies. It may be a miracle but it can also be a curse. Please be careful with anything that is given medically as we don't know what's really being put into our bodies. We also have a nation that is "apparently" over populated. From what we have been told so I would definatly be extra careful with things such as birth control. Who knows it could be an easy way to stop the population... from growing and that is to make women fertile through vaccinations. Especially for us women who go on it for the intention of not getting pregnant. Please be smart use your head. If you can deal with a bit of pain once a month for a week than you shouldn't be taking this. It's not the solution. You can try other safe things like buscipan which is a anti spasmatic medication you can buy for cheap. I Get 20 pills for 10$. At any regular pharmacy. Along with other things such as tynenol, midol etc.

I have been on the depo shot sense 2008.  I am approching the 5 year limit that my doctor allows.  I was depressed at first because i have tried other types of birth contol and it has been a real task to find one that makes me feel like myself and regulates my period.  Within the last year, i have been to see a doctor for throyd problems, kidney stones, severe abdominal pain, headaches, and several other symptoms.  It frusturates me that I am in constant pain, yet no one knows what is causing it. I have been to the ER several times when i was to the point that i could no longer stand due to the pain.  They run every test possible and yet everyting comes back normal.  From all of the comments i have read on her it sounds as if the depo shot is where all of this is generating from.  Needless to say, I will not be getting another injection.  As much as I love it and as much i dread trying to find another birthcontrol that will work for me it isn't wort all of the risks that have been described, and I need to get rid of these symptoms as soon as possible as they make life very difficult when you have a job that you have to be at and a child you have to raise.  Thank you for all of your comments, and helping me reach this conclusion.  I will be discussing options with my doctor in the near future.

I would get this problem... i have my period right now though, so i'm guessing the whole nausea and abdominal pain is from my period, but after intercourse when i would be it would burn, but the thing is that i didnt need lube because i was pretty dang wet... so... and he ejaculated in me, so idk if its the shot that is fighting off the sperm.

I am 21 years old and received my first injection nearly two months ago. The first month, I didn't experience any debilitating issues. However, my period persisted for two weeks, which was irritating but not awful. This month, I have experienced a host of issues including headaches, decreased appetite, nausea, increased anxiety, stomach pains, terrible cramping and muscle aches. I am due for my next injection next month and will not be taking it.
