Hi,
I have been struggling with this night pain for more than a year and a half, and im finally getting to the bottom of it. I started by trying to elimate all sorts of food like glutten, dairy but it dis not improve my condition. I then saw a naturopath and did an allergy test and found that I was allergic to soy. When I eliminated soy from my diet, I saw an improvement in the bloating during the day but the night pain remained. I also did a bowel cleansing diet with supplements to kill all parasites and rebuild the lining of my guts, still no progress.
Finally, I decided to start walking everyday for at least 20 minutes and breathe deeply expending my belly to create movement inside and it seemed to work. No more pain in the morning when I do this simple exercise.

Please try also and let know. I hope this can help someone.

It makes me nervous that I'm reading some have had this for months and years.   Mine just started 5 days ago.   I am having sever pain in my lower left abdominal/back almost like I getting kicked in the nuts.  I couldn't say it was in one spot just a general cramping.  First night I laid in the shower for 3 hours and the warm water eased the pain but the second night nothing was working so I ended up in the ER where they did full blood panel and CT scan all coming back normal.  They couldn't find anything wrong. After getting pain shots and nausea medicine by 7am I felt OK and they sent me on my way with a prescription for Vicodin.  During the days I would say i am still uncomfortable maybe a 2.5-3 on a pain scale but during the evening starting at around 9-10 until 3 to 4 am I would say it kicks up to a 7-8.5 on a pain scale.  I could hardly catch my breath and felt like I was panting it hurt so bad.   I have an appointment with my primary care today in 2 hours so will hopefully get a better Idea.  So far I have found that Sitting up in my office chair helps to lesson the pain. and its worse at night than any other time.     I did start taking Actvia Yogurt and Probiatoics from Walmart recommended in one of the earlier posts.  No luck yet but its early.

Hi Sick in St Louis,

Your issue sounds a lot worse than just inflammation, but it does not mean that it can not be potentially cured. Your issue sounds like a gall stone, kidney stone, an ulcler, or something along those lines. I would recommended that you get your primary care to send you to a specialist (Gastroenterologist) ASAP. The primary care will not know what is wrong, and if he suggest that he does, you should 'still' go see a specialist ASAP. -J

I was taking a weight loss pill called Xenadrine with Ephedrine in it; it has since been taken off the market. I was taking it for energy, but now in hindsight, looking back, it is my opinion that it was the cause of my severe Hyperacidity (overproduction of stomach acid) and also depleted the protective lining of my stomach. Then, even after I stopped it, the hyperacidity was so bad that my doctor prescribed a very high dose of a prescription antacid called PPI and it did more damage to my body than I could have ever imagined. It suppressed the acid, but it took me years to discover that it was the prescription antacid PPI that was causing all of the other severe problems. Also, the problems came on gradually, so they were not noticeable, and one would never think that a stomach pill could cause problems in other areas of the body. I had stomach acid so bad that they actually sent me for surgery and cut me open to wrap my stomach around itself to stop the acid from coming up my throat while I slept at night; I would wake up gagging and choking. Don't let it get that far. Take my advice; throw the weight loss pills in the garbage and go for a walk each day instead. Buy a book to teach you how to cut out the sugar, fat, and salt so that you can start to taste healthy food again and loose weight in a healthy, safe manner. I also recommend a multivitamin to rebuild the protective stomach mucosa. DO NOT PUT YOUR FAITH IN PILLS. Good luck. -J

Sounds like low grade interstitial cystitis (IC); that is what I think I have. You may want to review the IC site.

Update, I oddly enough felt much better 95% better the next night. Primary doc did refer me to a GI for a colonoscopy which hasn't happened yet. BUT (pun intended) I feel completely better now. I really think the activia twice a day and the probiotics helped to reestablish my intestines bacterial levels that were out of wack. I think maybe a slipped disk in my back also kicked in and worsened the symptoms. Although im 7 days now with out pain. Im still going to follow up with the a GI, but am now back to normal. Will update with any changes.

Hi, Lately when I've being going to bed after being asleep for about an hour not even, I wake up with pains in my stomach that won't go away and I start to feel like I'm going to be sick, and in most cases I end up sitting on the bathroom floor or with a bucket nested to my bed for reassurance... I mainly sleep on my side, or on my stomach, I thought it was due to the fact that i don't eat the right foods, but I've cut right back on the amount of junk food and it's still happening? I'm only 18, 5 foot 8 and weigh 72kgs

Hi G. While most cases that I have seen on here are caused by inflammation from eating too much food consisting of Omega-6 fat or by eating foods that degrade the protective mucus mucosa of the stomach, the symptoms are rarely fast enough to cause someone to huddle on the bathroom floor in agony. If I were to guess what you have, I would say it would look at the things that cause severe nausea, such as an ulcer or a gall stones. I strongly recommend that you have your primary care physician send you to a gastroenterologist. If you want to test yourself to see if your problems are caused by eating inflammatory foods, go two to three whole days while only eating things on what is called the "anti inflammatory diet." You can look it up (we are not allowed to post links here). If your issue is primarily caused by inflammation you should see a change in just the first day, but more surely the second day and should sleep well; just keep in mind that you can eliminate the inflammation source in a day but it may be accompanied by a severe diminishment of your protective mucus mucosa of your stomach and intestines; that has to be rebuilt over time; vitamin Zinc is said to be one of the only things that helps rebuild it, but a multivitamin is also suggested; Good luck!

My 8 yr old daughter has been suffering from these pains at night - usually about 4 nights in a row, then nothing for a couple of weeks, then another attack again.  We went to the chemist and he said it was possibly abdominal migraines.  Heat packs and pain killers don't seem to do much so we tried different techniques to get rid of any trapped wind (as I read on here).  That has worked so far - last night was hers and my first full night sleep in a week.  I hope this is the cure!

Hi Hofa,

I am a little out of my element on this one because your daughter's issue does not sound like inflammation; a heat or cold pack would have made some difference if it was. It is strange that the pain goes away and then comes back. At first I was thinking that it might be some sort of intestinal obstruction, but the fact that her pain lasts 4 full days and then goes away points to something that she may be eating at those times. She may be allergic to something that you are feeding her. If I were you I would not waste time; take it from me, stomach and intestinal pain can be excruciating. I would ask her primary care doctor to send her for a CT scan to see if there is an obstruction; the primary care may insist that you see a specialist (gastroenterologist) first though, which is a good idea either way, so try to schedule both asap. In the few days that you are waiting to see the specialist if I were you, I would record every single thing that your daughter eats...(everything), right down to how much water she drinks and where she drinks it from; believe it or not water bound microbes from tap water are a huge cause of disease and illness right here in the US. They can be absorbed through our skin or by drinking the water. If she has another pain attack, go straight to the log and see what was different; if there is no obvious conclusion perhaps the CT or specialist will be able to help; just don't let him put her on the first drug that comes to his mind without your researching it. Hope this helps. -J

Thanks Joseph. We ended up having the night doctor come out last night as she had 2 attacks in a row, which she hasn't had before. I'm glad we did that rather than wait to see our regular dr during the day as he got to hear her tummy "in action". He said it was definitely overactive and prescribed an anti-spasm medication. He said if this doesn't work by the middle of next week, she needs further investigation.

Hofa,

Far be it for me to go against a doctor's action, but I have to tell you that he only treated the symptoms in stead of the source of the problem. It will be important for you to find out what is causing the spasms so to eliminate it instead of taking medications that have long lists of side effects. My doctor tried to give me anti-spasm medication as well when my pain became too much to handle, but the medication made me very nauseous and foggy, and didn't treat the cause of the problem. The pain that your daughter has is her body trying to tell itself that there is a problem, and anti-spasm medication will essentially just be like telling that danger flag to "keep quiet and don't worry about it" Also, it should be mentioned that a diagnosis of "over active digestive track" is a over-generalized diagnosis that could point to a great number of causes. She could have pyloric atresia, which is when the pyloric the valve in between the stomach and intestine becomes inflamed to the point where the stomach has to push and squeeze until the food finally leaves the stomach into the intestine; the valve can become inflamed from eating inflammatory foods like omega-6 fats (vegetable oils), or from loss of the protective lining. Either way a gastroenterologist would have better insight. Good luck.

Thanks Joseph. I do understand where you're coming from and have certainly taken on board your suggestions. As my daughter is only 8 I am comfortable trying this medication as a first resort. While I do agree about some meds merely telling your body to ignore the problem (eg cough meds and this anti-spasm med) they can also relax the problem long enough to give your body the energy to fix the problem. I would prefer to try this first rather than jump straight into tests that are going to be daunting and scary for an 8 yr old. Absolutely this will be our next move if those meds don't work. Thanks for letting me know about your nausea and fogginess - I will keep an eye out for that. We had a pain free night last night which is encouraging although I'm prepared with the next plan if these meds don't work. Thanks again Joseph!
