I've been getting muscle cramping in my left and right side of my abs at night as well, and but it gets better almost immediately when I stand up or if I'm sitting down. I also sometimes (independently) get inner hip pains that causes me to limp while walking.

I used and worked out the muscle at the location of my cramps is the psoas muscle.

A weak, tight psoas muscle can cause pain when lying down, and also hip pains as well.

There's a few websites on how to stretch the psoas muscle (just do a search for "psoas stretch"), I'm going to try them out, but I thought I'll let you all know just in case it's the same cause.

Wow, i have been suffering with these issues for a few years now, nice to see i am the not only one with a undiagnosable problem. I will check this forum periodically to see if anybody has found the problem. I would like to add that i am a 38 year old male, over weight 285lbs, 5'11". I also have been diagnosed with GERD and HBP. My pain, is both on the lower left and right abdomen and is worst in the early hours of the morning, waking me from sleep. Some days it does not go away for a few hours of being awake. Have come to wits end with the DR's, i have had every test done as well, CAT scan, Upper GI study, ColonOscopy, x-rays, and they look at me and go, umm takes some fiber!! yeah thanks doc, i just paid a c**p load of money for you to tell me i should take more fiber.

Frustrated,
Shannon

I can't believe I found this board.

I have had this problem for, yes, almost 7 years. Many times I have searched for answers on the internet, never finding anything that really fits my symptoms until now. It's 10 pm and I feel fine right now..... no pain at all. But at about 4 am tomorrow morning, I'm going to wake up with severe pain my lower abdomen.

I'm 38 yo female. I've been to GI Drs and numerous gynos about my problem.... no one can figure out what's wrong. I have never been able to find a "solution," although in the past year I have started taking enzymes and probiotics with all my meals, and this does seem to lessen the severity of the pain. However, if I get lazy (as I have been lately!) and don't take them for a day or two, the problem is back again. Like many of you, the pain is often so severe I have to get out of bed, and when I do it is usually subsiding within 15 minutes. One new symptom I have been experiencing occasionally over the six months is if I have a bowel movement in the morning I will sometimes feel nauseated right afterwards for about an hour. Anyone else have this? I have endured the pain for years, but this just started relatively recently.

The name of the supplements I've been taking: Primal Defense HSO Probiotic Formula and Omega-Zyme Digestive Enzymes, both made by Garden of Life. I have to take them before every meal, and they help the problem substantially. Maybe these can help some of you.

Obviously, I believe it is an intestinal problem, and I think it must somehow be related to hormones fluctuating as you sleep, or gas being entrapped. The most striking thing to me is that it only occurs at night.... you would think that should be a red flag to indicate some particular cause.

I hope someone else on here finds a solution or cause and posts. I will keep watching this board.

Wow - I too am relieved I'm not crazy nor the only one with this. I do wish someone would figure it out so we could all find some relief!

I wake up every single night at about 4 or 5 with bloating and cramps, lower left abdomen. Have had colonoscopy, barium enema and endoscopy which ruled out tumor, diverticulitis and Celiac. So I got the standard non-diagnosis of IBS. I have tried to cut out the bad stuff (caffeine, alcohol, etc) and increased fibre but it is hard to keep that up.

What I have found as a temporary relief is the use of a heating pad. It seems to ease my cramps but I still wake up every night, meaning I'm pretty tired a lot of the time.

Please post if anyone finds an answer!
thanks

Hi there - I've had what sounds like this for a couple of weeks now and it seemed to develop after exercise - I did circuits on sun, weights on mon, then a vigorous game of football (soccer) on tues. After the football I had a sore back and this upper ab / stomach pain under the ribs.

The back pain eased and comes and goes, but after going to bed and lying down for about 5/6 hours, I wake up with the really sore upper ab / stomach pain and if I engage the muscle the wrong way it cramps. I find it really difficult to get comfortable again in bed and tend to round my back more. After about 30mins to an hour after getting out of bed and being upright in a chair or walking it's goes, only to come back again the next day after lying down.

I'm 31. I've ordered a new mattress so I'm hoping that may help.

Hey,

Just searched as i am having a similar problem as you guys and found this thread!

I've been having it for about 2 years or so now. Used to be only at about 3am at night i'd wake up with horrible cramping through my lower pelvic region. i get up, go to the bathroom, take a couple of panadol and go back to bed and it usually subsides within 15 mins and i sleep fine for the rest of the night. (often helps if my partner rubs my back to distract me from the pain). however lately it's been happening in the morning before i get up as well. i don't have it regularly, sometimes i'll go for months without pain, but i've had it 3 times over the past week or 2. it never occurs multiple times within a night, only ever 1 time.

I thought it may have been related to pelvic weakness so started pilates classes, but this hasn't helped at all. it doesn't seem related to food or menstruation, and i've had blood tests done at the dr's which showed nothing abnormal. I am getting very sick of this problem though and am considering booking in with a gynecologist (expensive though they can be). any help!?

I think going to a gyno would be a good idea. It sounds like it's not abdominal so much as it's related to your uterus so I think that's a good idea. Let me know how it goes okay?

2 years of interrupted sleep, waking with a pain in lower right abdomen, wriggling to get comfortable, eventually falling back to sleep just before need to get up. Hot shower and on with the day and the low grade pain is put to the back of my mind.

Had colonoscopy, Ct scan, 2 detailed gyno visits, organ scan, numerous blood test, finally after 2 years doc asks for a stool test! Guess what everything out of kilter - given Probiotical from Phacobel, after 24 hours enjoyed first full nights sleep. Give it a go.

Hi, I am 32 and no more than 10lbs overweight. One night I woke up around 4am with this horrible cramp in my left side/back right under my rib. It felt like muscle spasms. I could not get back to sleep. Ever since then it happens about 4 out of 7 nights. It doesn't seem to happen until i wake up and if I wake up around 4am there goes my sleep for the rest of the night. My Dr sent me for a chest Xray b/c he thought maybe I did something to my rib but nothing. He said he could start running all sorts of tests and it was up to me. I told him I would think about it.
Once I am up and about for around an hour it is gone. It is so weird. I had my back adjusted and that did nothing too. WHat the heck is going on?? UGH. If anyone finds anything out please let me know. I am thinking about getting pregnant again but adding something like that to existing side/back pain isn't a good idea.

I am experiencing a lot of these symptoms too and no doctor has been able to help. I have major bloating all day that gets worse as the day goes on. At night about 1:00 a.m. I have to get up to pee and its a strange feeling (like my bladder has stretched and there is no more room in my stomach for it). I don't really have to pee all that much but then after I get this weird side pain and a lot of bound up gas. Lately also my gas has no odor. It is just really bound up at that time of night. I may wake up again at 5:00 a.m. with the same thing. If I wake up at that time I have a BM and then just get up for the day and it goes away, but the bloat remains all day. I have had CT scan, blood work, GYN stuff done and no answers. GI doctor was useless. Please any answers???????????

My fiance happens to have the same problem you guys have been discussing. I did not find a solution to the problem in the discussion, everyone posted their questions but there was no reply from a professional practitioner resolving anyone's problem. Is there any medication one needs to take? Any dietry ciontrol.

My fiance has had all her blood tests, CTScan and all other required tests but all the tests turned negative. She's slim young in her earl 20's and complains about stomach aches at night only. At times if the pain is ver severe, its after affects are even felt in the day. Is there any solution to it?

Like most of you, I am going through the same thing. I am only 24 years old, and have noticed this pain for the past, maybe, 6 months. However, it comes and goes and doesn't occur every night or very constant. I rather notice it seems more likely to occur when I drink coffee within a few hours before I go to sleep. And the pain mostly wakes me up approx 2-5 hours after going to sleep (or drinkin the coffee?) when I'm laying on my back or stomach. It feels like my organs are pressing on something sensitive in my entire abdomenal region and it's pretty unbearable to remain in that position. I also notice, it seems likely to occur when I don't lay down at all, all day, which tends to prevent me from passing gas, because laying on my side is pretty much the easiest and most likely way I'll pass gas. Also, like most of you, sometimes I feel the urge to pee, and I go and the pain goes away a little, so it feels like something related to my bladder/pee at the same time. Therefore, I must assume it is related to a bladder problem... or a gas problem... and/or a caffeine side effect.

I will share that I just ran into another posting that was relatively short (2 posts) and posted something similar to this post, and someone stated they were diagnosed with Epididymitis, but apparently it only affects men. So you men, could get this tested and ruled out (or in), but us women, I just don't know. If it's caffeine, why? Maybe it's bladder related and we should be getting tested for certain bacterias within it. Just some suggestions. Hope someone figures this out and narrows it down for the rest of us.

I have had the same symptoms since last July. Mine started while on an 2 month cruise in the Bahamas. I first thought it might be a strained muscle; but the pain is only in the early hours of the day (2 - 6 AM) and goes away once I am up. I wondered if I could have gotten a parasite while out of the country. Does anyone know if there is a parasite that reacts in this manner? This may be a stretch; but it seems that everyone who has gone through multiple tests have come up with nothing.

This problem has affected me for about 5 years and there seems to be no clear diagnosis. I finally had a colonoscopy 3 months ago and that showed that I have diverticulitis and internal haemorhoids. However, the consultant could not confirm that my pain is due to either of those conditions.
The pain is midway between the ribs and pelvis on the left side. I cannot sleep on my left side because it feels like I have a baseball in there, although there is nothing to feel if I palpate the area. Sometimes it extends to excruciating backache but it disappears within 15 minutes of getting up.

I have the same problem and have had it for a year or more. I drink lots of caffeine sodas so I have to pee during each night. I had a question for all of you that have this problem....do you empty your bowels in the morning? If so maybe it is heavy on your intestines or something. I thought of that in my case. I just had a miscarriage but had this long before that, point being my uterus is fine so I'm ruling that out.

My pain is on the right side (slightly left of my hip))and goes to my back. If I get up to go pee, i have to come back and lay on my left side or sleep on my back but elevated.
I am 35, mother of two, thyroid problem, 5'4 130lbs.

is anyone of same? and do you use the restroom in the morning #2? I am guessing we all have a schedule for that. LOL I know my body does.
