Sorry I have no answer, just suffering from the same kind of pain.

I am a 47 year old male. 6'- tall and about 170 pounds. I have had the same issues as most of the people here. I go to bed around 10 and wake 2 to 3 hours later with acute pain in my mid right side. I take a breath and relax and am able to get out of bed. I feel bloated and while I am lying in bed have no urge to urinate until I get out of bed for a few minutes. After urinating, the pain subsides somewhat. I lie back down in the bed propped up by pillows, as this seems to ease the pain and allows me to sleep for a few more hours, after which the same process occurs again about an hour before I need to get up for work. I have had a colonoscopy which came back negative. I also had an MRI done, which showed I have a bulging disc about 2 discs up from my tailbone, which is pinching some nerves. My chiropractor said this area affects the stomach. I have had several adjustments to no avail. I find it funny so many people are suffering from the same thing and nobody knows what it is. This has been going on with me every night without fail since February of 2009. Hopefully someone will be able to figure this out.

I was just thinking last night that I should go back online and post; it looks like I prob. have pancreatitis. I've been on anti-seizure meds for some yr.s and pancreatitis is a poss. side effect. My pain, though is directly over the pancreas which is LEFT side.

Have you tried the diagnosis screener offered by

I narrowed myself down to pancreatitis and started a special diet and found IMMEDIATE relief... after which my doc.s said, "Gee, I guess it's prob. pancreatitis!"

8 docs. visits, 5 specialist, MRI, ultrasound..., and I figure it out online. Why are people afraid of Gov. health care?!

Best of luck!!!!!!!

Yes, I have the same exact problems. From the Acid Reflux, to the midnight abdominal pains. I have no clu what it is. I was wondering if it was maybe related to me ovulating, but I don't think so. I was wondering, have you had any problems with child bearing if you have tried that is? I have, and I'm afraid it may have something to do with the abdominal pain. :'(

I am not a medical expert and am a male,(so dont have a female specific answer) however I too suffer from the same malady
I worked for a bedding company (wont mention who) but bought home a special mattress and tried it for the night and voila pain gone!!!
Now I am not gooing to recommend any mattress in particular, suffice to say that maybe thats where you need to be looking
I could not afford the mattress so am still suffering with back and stomach pain
I have had an endoscopy through the unpleasant end and have also had an ultrasound
The ultrasound found a gallstone, so have had the gallbladder and gallstone subsequently removed, still have the pain
Hope this helps a little, seriouslty though maybe the bed is the problem, particularly if it is too soft
Post an answer and let me now your thoughts

I am wondering if any of the people who have posted here also suffer with pain in their right shoulder blade. I have been reading up on gall bladder issues and they talk about pain in the mid section of the back as well as shoulder pain behind the right shoulder blade. The pain in my shoulder blade comes and goes, but I feel it at some point every day. It seems to coincide with the pain I've been having for the last year or so, with the night pains. The one thing I am confused about regarding gall bladder symptoms is that it also states that vomiting and naseau are common symptoms which I have had none of. Any thoughts on this, anyone?

My pain started 6 years ago after sleeping on a cot for 6 months. It was mild at first and fairly random. The pain would wake me up, I would roll over and everything would be fine. But thing have gotten progressively worse. It would wake me up, I would roll over fall back asleep and then wake up to pain in the side I was now on. It eventually went to my back as well. It is at the point now where I will wake up 4-5 times a night with severe pain in both sides and my back. If I elevate to a siting position, the pain lessens enough to sleep through the night. Three years into this ordeal I was told it was due to a UTI, but I find it very hard to believe I have had a UTI for 6 years and have never recieved that diagnoses again. So far the best answer I got was that the pain is muscular-skeletal. I am a curvey woman, I have a very small waist and wide hips (not due to weight, but to bone structure). The Dr said to support my waist with some sort of pillow to keep my spine and skeletal structure in alignment. This actually seems to help. But if I do not support my waist, it is guarenteed I will have excruciating pain every night. Oh, one odd bit of trivia, I travel a lot and when I sleep on a new bed I can usually get 2-5 days of painless sleep depending on the softness of the bed (firm bed=pain).

I am a thin 62 year old male and for a year or two have been waking almost every night 4 to 5 hours after going to bed with lower abdominal pains which I think are in my intestines. If I get up and move around or even just sit up in bed it goes away. I've had colonoscopy, endoscopy, lactose intolerance and fructose intolerance tests, all negative. It sounds like the same old story with the doctors not having a clue. The fact that it only occurs when in the prone position and like clockwork about 4 hours after I lie down should be a clue. It sounds like lots of people have this problem and no one yet has found a cause or solution.

Wow - this thread is my life!! I wake most (not all nights) about 5am and cannot pinpoint the pain - mainly right side, spreads from bowel, stomach, hips, from right up from my rib cage. It doesn't help changing sides - the pain is back in a few minutes. Some nights I get back to sleep in bed - other nights I end up in the recliner. Once I am up the pain is usually gone within minutes. I seem to need the toilet for both reasons as soon as I wake up now. If I walk after work it is worse. I'm sorry you guys are in pain to but it's nice to know that I'm not alone.

its really wierd how many people are going through this! i just started getting awful tummy aches starting at like 4pm till bed time, and then cool the next morning. I pretty much have the same symptoms as you all (but not quite as severe, I can sleep uninterupted), and sometimes I just feel painfully hungry with random sharp shots of pain in my upper abdomen, and creepy back pain. laying on my back helps too. i hope someone figures out what this is
given your testimonies, relief seems bleak. maybe i got it from bleu cheese
Jesus please heal me and my friends on here!

I had the horrible pain at night too, it would get me up and I would not be able to go back to sleep. It turns out I have celiac's disease (family history) and all the inflammation was causing pancreatitis and issues with my liver (elevated bloodwork eventually). Before I knew what was going on I used to get up and think it was an upset tummy or ulcer and would go eat crackers which were just making everything worse. Once I stopped eating things with gluten after a bit I started to be able to sleep and not have the pain. I also had to make sure not to use any splenda and msg as they both also cause me to have pain at night (with splenda even during the day). It might be some of you have issues with certain foods, that you have an intolerance and once you stop eating whatever it is you might do better at night.

It is a pain to have to keep a food diary but maybe that might give a clue what is causing your pain. I know now I can tell that night if I have had something I can't eat and it takes a few days to get back to normal but I try really hard now to avoid the bad stuff. Anyone who thinks they are lactose intolerant and has the pain should definitely try eliminating gluten for a bit to see if there is an improvement (it is easier to do now more gluten free things). Casein (the issue for lactose intolerance) is very similar to gluten.

I am amazed at how many people suffer from these night pains. I also have been to multiple GI docs, with very little relief. I had my gallbladder removed, but that didn't bring any relief. After my last colonoscopy, I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis. Still no relief. Getting up and spending the remaining night in an easy chair or recliner are pretty much a nightly routine. Occasionally I will take a narcotic pain pill, (lortab), when the pain gets unbearable. Also, taking an ambien before going to bed usually keeps me asleep all night long. I just have to ration the ambien to keep from developing a tolerance. Has anyone tried Librax? I have heard some IBS patients have had some relief with Librax. I am going to ask my internist about it the next time I have an appointment. In the meantime, let's all pray for a miracle cure.
