I had a similar problem. I would go to bed around 10-11 and then wake up several hours later with a throbbing pain that was always on my right side, about an inch to the right and below of my belly button. The pain would go away as soon I got up and walked around. If I slept upright (in a chair), I was fine. Motrin worked at first, but eventually it stopped helping. I had ultrasounds and visited several doctors with no help. Finally my chiropractor said it was my psoas muscle. He recommended stretches (which helped) and deep tissue massages (which didn't help).
Another suggestion from the chiropractor was this - when I would wake up in pain, slide over to the very edge of the bed while still laying flat on my back (right side of the bed since my pain was on my right side). Lower my right leg off the bed so I would get a good stretch on the psoas muscle. This helped alot.
Finally, I ended up going to a different chiropractor that performed an adjustment to my right leg and I have slept pain free ever since - about 3 weeks.
I don't know if this helps at all, but I really enjoy having a good night sleep! Good luck-

A CURE?Ok so l think l might have found a cure
l have read a lot of peoples quotes and most if not all describe what l have been experiencing for 4 night straight, l could sleep from around 2 till 3, sometimes later but only ever at night till it got worse and came at around 10
The cure :
it may sound crazy but it is highly likely for a few if not more of you taking tablets called :windsettlers will help. My mum had the same thing a year ago for a few years before she took this and l now took them and it worked. Only a few days ago l looked at this thread as l was so worried it was something serious but for me it wasnt and lm sure and hope it will work for you also!
BTW - I didnt feel like l had to 'blow wind' it just was very painful

For the past year, I have been waking up with back, side and abdominal pain. Once I walk around, however, I usually feel fine. I had an upper endoscopy a few months ago thinking it might be an ulcer. It wasn't. I then started going to a chiropractor for the back pain and he thought the symptoms sounded a lot like ankylosing spondylitis. He took some x-rays and it looks like I have some disc degeneration. I have an appt. with a rheumatologist in a month. I have been doing yoga every night before bed and that seems to relieve the pain. I hope this helps.
Give up the soda pop - Coke, Pepsi, diet Dr. Pepper, etc. If it's carbonated, don't drink it. Switch to kool aid or something. Several years ago I had the same symptoms everyone here is talking about. They went away and I forgot about it. A couple months ago the pain came back. I did a little self study and voila - figured it out. I'm not a big pop drinker. I throw a party, the pop is left over, so I drink it. Believe me, it took a LOT of trial and error to figure this one out. I'm saving you the details. I couldn't believe it at first, so I bought more pop as a test (a self made guinea pig). Bingo. The pain doesn't come the same day I drink it. Maybe in a day or two. If I have, say 3 cans a day for three days, that bloody pain will last me a whole week (like the week after I drank it)! The more I drink, the worse the pain. Maybe this won't work for everyone since every person is different. I imagine if you've been drinking it everyday for a long time, it will take a whole lot longer to get whatever it is out of your system. I'm 36, average ht/wt, not on any meds. The pain would wake me up at night - I'd think maybe if I went to the bathroom it would help, but it really didn't. I'd just lay in bed trying to focus on my breathing. If I'd get up and walk around, I'd be ok. During the day, no probs whatsoever. No vomiting. Good Luck!
Firstly, I have no background in medicine but have had these main symptoms for nearly 40 years now - had colonoscopies, endoscopies, etc - nothing wrong. First, everyone should differentiate between the musculo-skeletal symptoms and the others (and of course, women and men can have different reasons for pain). If you have pain in the lower abdomen, particularly on the left side, consider that you might have diverticular disease. Basically, the intestine forms pouches which become inflamed and/or infected. My feeling is that this affects peristalsis (the muscular movement forcing foodstuffs etc through the intestine), but during the day, gravity helps it along too so it's only at night that it becomes a problem. Whatever the reason, wind is trapped in the intestine and it swells - for me, rubbing the area for a while helps. I've been given two pieces of advice: firstly, eat plenty of fibre and secondly sleep with the head of the bed raised - put it on bricks or something. The first tip hasn't helped me a lot, although I find that fatty foods affect the upper digestive tract badly; but the second tip has certianly helped me. Next time you see your practitioner, ask about the possibility of diverticulitis or diverticulosis. This link is useful:

After reading this thread and having the same night time only issues, laying horizontal, ie feeling like someone had kicked me in the gut just below the navel, after sleeping for 3 hrs, I tried one of the easy suggestions first and it worked for me - - - -Glucosamine and Chondroitin, a double dose 3 times a day with meals.
I had previously been taking a generic for an antiboiotic called KeFlex (aka Cephalexin) for about 10 days and i THINK IT CLEANED
OUT ALL OF THE GOOD BACTERIA IN MY TUMMY and somehow Glucosamine and Chondroitin from Wal-Mart fixed the night time attacks of pain.
I was so glad I didn't have to go through the battery of test like others have done.
I love it when a holistic remedy actually works!
Thanks to those who ever they were who on this forum helped save me a lot of time and money on wasted tests....

I've had the same problem that many of you had. It would begin with feeling like someone had punched me in the stomach, then it would get worse to where I wasn't sleeping and I was crying all night between visits to the bathroom and my bed. I was told that it could've been gas, but I took the maximum amount of anti-gas medication that I could without overdoesing but the pain would remain. I found that sometimes just letting the pain be there and relaxing helped a little but never fully resolved the issue. I finally went to see a doctor about it and though I had no tests done she said that high amounts of caffiene consumption can cause your stomach and your intestines to expeirience cramping sensations. I've stopped drinking the amount of soda and tea that I normally had and I've yet to experience much more of the problem involving the intense stomach problems. I'm currently facing a smaller version that is dealable with but not entirely intense. I hope this has helped anyone. Just drink about four glasses of water a day and limit your caffiene I guess. good luck

I have the same problem, i will wake up everynight around 2 am. And the pain will be very severe. But then buy *- !0 in the morning i will be completly fine until the next night.
i had the same thing and i had a pelvic ultrasound and anything else do to with the female organ. i got a rectum exam and my bowels were inflamed. i was on a steriod for 2 weeks and feeling a lot better until 4 months later. they think it might be chrons disease.
For everyone who is confused about the abdominal pain at night please ask your doctor about Eosiniphilic Esophagitis. Don't google it and assume you do not have this, a lot of the symptoms can vary because it is a relatively new disorder. A biopsy of the esophagus will diagnose it. Not many doctors are familiar with EE, so you should be careful when choosing a doctor (GI). If you have been diagnosed with GERD, there is a good chance you may have EE instead. !
Hi there everyone, well i started with pain in my lower left side/abdomen around 3/4 weeks ago however as i have endometriosis i assumed it was something to do with that. I now think that it is un related. I get the pain only at night, passing wind seems to help but doesnt releve the pain also moving my bowels. I wake around 3 or 4 am everynight in pain i cant lay on either side and the pain eases when i lay on my back. If i get up the pain eases and goes away. Although today the pain stayed untill midmorning and i have to take pain killers. I am so worried and i dont know what this is but i am so so tired and i cant get a sleep because of this pain. I wish that it would go away. Any way i am going to see the doctor in the morning and i will write and let everyone know how i get on. xx :-(
I have been suffering the same symptoms at night for about a week. I suspect that a change in my diet (because I am trying to lose weight) plus too much acid is causing my problem, but I found this website that might interest some of you. I am in no way promoting the products mentioned, but something in the article might help some of you. I found the information interesting.

Any chance any of you have been eating persimmons? If so, you should read up on it. I think that's been my problem.
Hi all. The mysterious problem of abdominal / back pain at this time of night has been slowly progressing over the last couple of years. I am in my 40's and considered in excellent physical shape / health. I take no meds. After about 3-4 hours of sleep I wake up with a dull pain / ache around the back / addomen which I cannot determine the specific location. Thought it was kidney pain for awhile. It is more often accompanied by grumbling / activity in the intestines. No intense pain, no gas, normal bowel movements, etc. I try really hard to find a good position to alleviate, but with less and less success. After about 2-3 hours, it subsides, and perhaps I can sleep. Within 30 minutes of getting up, it's gone. One thing that helps is if I stop all eating by about 3-4 pm, and only have water and maybe a little salad. Olive oil, ice cream, carbs seem to make it worse. I will try to stop caffeine as well.
