:Hi Kelly, good to read your response. i had a stroke at the end of July and me too very lucky to be alive and me too very very hard to be struggling with the fatigue. I have not been drinking as I think it really interferes with brain healing and in the past i have loved a glass or two of red wine.

80/13/2014- Had a mild, dime sized stroke on my right side. Most symptoms gone. I'm alcoholic, sober for 4 months, until this week. 3 beers every 3 nights or so. Very fatigued the nest day. Still smoke, maybe half pack a day, tho' trying to quit via vapor cigs. Not much luck on smoking, but cutting slowly. I want to quit smoking, via vape in time. Altogether in time. Been to alc/rehab many times. Alcoholic neuropathy in legs makes it hard to walk more than 30 yds. Therapy does't seem to help legs. My question- Who can drink w/o a cig and what is my possible life span? I'm 49 and want to live to travel/see the world. I love life. Any suggestions? Not afraid to die, just not ready. Rehab- out of the question. Heard it all, done it all. It leaves me more depressed than my faith in God. Thanks. Any suggestions are welcome.

My husband is 3 1/2 years post stroke with right side paralysis; the first thing they gave him was antidepressants. You should start there.

Hi, My husband had a stroke 3 months ago, he had been drinking daily for about 2years before that, he is still drinking and it seems to hit him a lot harder and it takes less to get him to the point of slurring his words, staggering, even falling, but after reading more and more, I'm terrified because is it the alcohol or TIA symptoms. I've found bottles of vodka hidden all over the house, he's always been just a beer drinker, I don't know what to do, is it his drinking or something more serious. It's happened at least 8 times in the last 3months. Please any info

I bekieve it ould be better ti try bit ti drubj tge wube, Tou oribably feel like drinking when your nerves get bad, try lying down for a rest and read a good book.

I can sympathize with you regarding your husband drinking. My boyfriend also had a stroke two years ago. I did not know he has always been a heavy drinker, otherwise I would never have started our relationship. He kept it well hidden from me but eventually the truth came out. He is at the stage now where his memory is impaired. Nothing seems to register with him, it's an almost childlike state he is in...but the heavy drinking continues...
So very sad.

Yes you need to try to stop her from drinking. So much i just had a stoke 3 weeks ago and it a day to day to try to stop drinking.

Stroke leaves the person more susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse, combined with post-stroke depression and resulting damaged-brain impaired decision making is a bad situation. Read all the posts here and see the common threads. Professional medical and QUALIFIED psychiatric help is needed and even then, positive outcome is difficult to achieve. If you don't go down this path, divorce, destruction of family and legal and emotional wreckage is the road ahead. The stroke victim's lack of self-awareness will be the biggest barrier to break free of the downward spiral. Involuntary legal commitment to a mental hospital for in-patient care may be required if the person is a danger to himself or others. Generally, the reality is that doctors, lawyers, judges and police officers are ill-equipped to deal with such people. Out legal and medical systems cannot and will not force anyone (even medically sick, brain damaged individuals) into treatment to stop their own self-destruction. I know this may be hard to hear, but if you really love the person, prepare yourself emotionally and financially for a bad outcome despite your best efforts. There is only one of three possible outcomes - jail, death or complete medically supervised psychiatric treatment with complete sobriety. Good luck.

hi. did you find out about drinking. I just had mini stroke 3 weeks ago but am a young 42 and still want occasional nights out with the girls or hubby. . I don't normally drink in house but only on occational nights out.....
