Hello everybody! I am a 20 year old female with IBS with constipation. When I was first having issues I went 12 days without a bowel movement. I was then told to drink magnesium citrate and take miralax everyday. I also started Linzess for the IBS. This constipation led to an anal fissure and a diaper rash like circle around my anus. I was prescribed a cream for the rash and an ointment called Rectiv for the fissure. Rectiv is nitroglycerin ointment that you put inside your anus (with a glove on) and it relaxes the muscles to let your fissure heal. The only downside is that the ointment is very strong so I recommend you only put it in at night as it will give you an instant headache and dizziness. You can also not get it anywhere else on your skin. You have to be extremely careful with the ointment but it works wonders.

My husband was diagnosed 8 months ago with anal fissure. His specialist has him using nitro cream, stool softener, fiber, and sits baths. Nothing has worked. He has pretty much had nervous breakdown from the constant pain. Doctor won't do surgery says its last resort. It's crazy.

I had a rectal fissure which was getting worse over a year and ultimately I could not walk. I had a surgery with Dr. Stern at Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery, Fairfax, VA and no more pain 2 days after and ever since.

Everyday take a bunch petroleum jelly and apply it all over in your hole before and after going to the bathroom. A syringe filled with it can help get it inside far enough. Really cuts down the pain.

If that's actually what the doctor said, then he's probably talking about dysplasia 2/2 to inflammation of the fissure, which would be squamous cell in nature. So, thats pretty strong words for something that is, at least, plausible even if improbable.

According to my surgeon, surgery causes scar tissue and scar tissue = tears, so it should be a last resort. I had a hemmorridectomy which caused scar tissue, which has now caused a fissure that won't go away. I have been in constant pain since the surgery, 6 months ago. First from the surgery, not the tear. I will NEVER have a surgery in that area of my body again.

I've dealt with fissures and hemorrhoids for the past four years (I'm 38). I've been able to eliminate bleeding and pain with these actions:

(a) if internal fissure or hemorrhoids, request a sigmoidoscopy exam (small camera on a flexible tube) with a highly-rated proctologist - it's mostly pain-free. Do not get an anoscopy exam, it's not fun.
(b) eat smaller meals - smaller poops are easier to pass
(c) double your water intake
(d) eat oatmeal with each meal - other fiber doesn't seem to work for me
(e) eat mostly fruits and vegetables to keep poop soft
(f) when bleeding use a water enema once a day for a week, to reduce friction when pooping. Do not use water enema longer, as it starts to irritate the anus, and causes weakened control
(g) when feeling pain, lubricant your anus with your fingers (nails trimmed) before pooping to reduce friction
(h) stop eating for one day
(i) do not eat sunflower or flaxseeds, these small sharp seeds will pelt your hemorrhoids and fissures - I've had 4 months of progress undone because of eating these
(j) use aloe vera for healing
