I'm not sure what could be causing my anger problems. Lately I've been getting aggrevated very easily. I realize this as I'm getting angry so I know that something is wrong. I've learned to meditate at a younger age so I have tried that, but with only a smal change and now it feels like my temper is comming back worse. I'm starting to become afraid because (although most guys will prolly say this) I'm deathly afraid of myself when I get very angry. I've always had some sort of control but now the slightest thing sets me off.
We (my family) have just gone through a move back in October so I don't think it could be stress from the move because we're done with the move. College is comming up but I'm not worried about it because all my focus is on graduating high school this year. After that, I'll worry about college so no problem there. I do work out and after my work out I take whey protein but I'm not sure if there are any side affects such as aggression. I take no medications or anything. Any suggestions?

I had anger issues as well for a long time. It was really easy for me to explode, I was not able to hold on my thoughts at all. My temper also was really bad and I started to lose my friends because of it. The truth is that no one was not able to stand someone like me. I was like energetic vampire and everyone hated me because of that.

Anyway, sometimes it is really hard to understand what the problem can be. I needed to go to the therapies for months to realize what is going on with me.

Medications were not able to help me. You know what helped me a lot?

Running!

I stated to run everyday after my work and my stress just went away. So running was my cure.

Well you have realized you have a problem with anger so it can only get better. Stay focused and in the known of whats going on around you and really think about things. Dont let litte things slip into your heart without passing though your brain.

Well, interesting that you're taking a whey protein after the gym. I, personally, usually take a different protein drink however on two occasions recently I have experienced high anger and on both days I had drunk a whey protein drink. Maybe there is a link there or we have a sensitivity to whey. Just a thought!

I've notice a link between taking protein supplements and feeling anger. I'm normally very laid back and easygoing. I remember in college I had my first protein shake at a health bar, and I felt really aggressive afterwards, and was surprised by the feeling. Now I just turned 50 and I sometimes take Myoplex Lite powder (with whey and soy protein), and often my wife can tell when I have because I'm less patient and get easily irritated. I don't notice the effect so much when I take straight protein, so it might be another ingredient, like taurine.

I'm 16 and I noticed whenever I take my creatine before my workout and my muscle milk (whey protein) after, I have anger problems for the next 2 days or so. Im assuming it's in the protein.

this is the only place i have been able to find anyone talking about the association between whey protein and anger, but I have definitely noticed a loss of temper control with intake of whey protein powder. Muscle milk is mostly made up of casein, which is a different milk protein, which I react to differently and more noticeably than whey, but after about a week of taking whey, I start to get violent dreams and I am angered very easily. I am guessing it is probably a food sensitivity thing as I know casein causes me a runny nose and increased inflammation, but I never really made the link until after I had been taking whey daily for over a year and drove off my friends who thought I was crazy with all my tantrums. I kind of thought I was crazy too.

Then again, I saw another website where someone was talking about mood swing problems from creatine, so I am not sure. I would love to know more about this, because whey does give certain benefits, but if loss of temper control is a side effect, I am not sure if the benefits are worth it.

I stumbled upon this thread a few months ago while searching for an answer to why I had developed an anger problem. I read the various posts on whey protein which I had started using about a year ago. I immediately threw my brand new, $20 can of whey protein away. A few months later, I am completley back to normal. No more feelings of intense, spontaneous and irrational anger. My anger was definately caused by the whey protein.

I've noticed for years that if I take free form amino acids I get way more irritable and aggressive. Most don't include tryptophan, which can be an imbalance problem, but even with casein I started noticing the problem, which has tryptophan.
My hunch was that glutamate could be the problem, plus many processed foods contain MSG (related to glutamate), which are known to cause these sorts of problems.
Natural rice protein agrees with me better, but my thinking is lean meat like turkey and chicken in 4 oz amounts is sufficient. If you take much more than that, it just hurts the body and it's not used for muscle. A good rule of thumb is to eat portions no bigger than the size of your palm. Also, red meats always make me more aggressive. Not sure if it's the hormone in them, but even organic beef does this to me. When they slaughter the cows, adrenaline and all sorts of hormones are released in their blood and you are eating it when you eat their meat. Koshur meats are drained of their blood, so they might be better, but are more expensive and less tasty (r.e. no uric acid basically).
Good luck on this one. A lot of things can contribute to aggression, but it's common in males...probably why something like 70-80% of prison inmates are men...

I had the same problem and I went to the doctor who said it was caused by an allergy, so I switched to regular protein powder.

I started taking whey shakes less than a week ago and I've noticed an increase in my aggression/temper. I have normal swings as anybody does, but this doesn't seem like a 'normal' swing so I thought maybe the shakes are affecting me.

I saw some other sites (body-building sites) where people laughed at the possibility that whey shakes could increase aggression... but I really do think this is the case.

I doubt this is anything to be worried over - it's probably a normal increase in testosterone. If it's a problem then of course getting off of whey for a month or so would be a sensible experiment!

I also get really angry after having whey protein. I read that your body can only process about 9 grams of protein per hour. The rest will be stored as fat. So basically since the average protein shake will give about 16 to 20 grams of protein most of it will not be used. It can also cause calcium deficiency and bone weakness as your body will use extra calcium to process all of this protein. Health experts say that most people don't need them as protein can be found pretty much everywhere in a normal diet: wholegain, milk, butter, nuts, cheese, meat, fish, etc. Protein shakes are just a marketing thing: drinking protein to get bigger is a bit easy and basic if you think about it.

Hey, try taking tryptophan and also a high carb drink [probably seperately because tryptophan tastes like poop] maybe after your workout or later that day and tell me if it helps your problem. Supposedly BCAAs in whey protein compete for the tryptophan transporter which may cause that anger/ anxiety

This is an old thread but no, it's not impossible from what I've seen. My ex started exercising and getting in shape a little over a year ago. She was successful at her attempts, but I noticed this side of anger to her that she never had. Granted, she can be moody at times, stressed as a typical Mother on the go.. etc, but this was not "rational" anger.  They key word is "rational".  Not only that, she has an under-active thyroid disease at 27.

She started taking these pills endorsed by Kendra Wilconson called Ab Cuts then. Like many hoping to lose weight quickly, she went with the market hype. "It must work if Kendra takes it" she would argue. The thing is Kendra is paid big $$$ to endorse it because she's a face that can roll over many buyers without question.  That's the big money marketing strategy. Celebrities also have access to gyms, dieticians and routines most non-rich people can't afford. It's amazing how most of the buyer market is blind to this and many of them are educated, successful people.

Anyway, this was the start of it which I noticed instantly along with her daily visits to the local gym.
For most of 2011 she came home with this angry side and/or she would snap instantly over something so trivial. I would honestly say she was acting like someone on roid-rage, however, she would never used actual steroids.

This is the interesting aspect; she stopped going to the gym and taking her "all-natural" supplements around December of 2011. For the next two and half to three months she was very rational, fun to be around.. a total joy.

In early March 2012, she bought herself a jogging machine, started drinking Whey Protein Drinks after each workout and back to the crazy anger spells all over again. It's the kind of anger where they snap at anything, there's no rationalization, it's just cursing and aggression and maybe violence for some. She knows I'll have her jailed if she actually decides to "break my face".

As far as I'm concerned, the "All-natural" label is meaningless with stuff like this. It has the consumer market fooled.
Most of  these energy supplements replaced Ephedra with orange peel which is a "natural" form of speed....

Apparently, these Whey Protein Drinks have a similar effect in causing aggression. If it's a re-occuring issue during certain moments and times, then it's not theory or a guessing game. I don't care what a "professionals in the field" will say because these are usually there to help endorse the product. Real doctors (not actors) and the FDA don't approve of any of this either.  There's a reason why....

The venom in puffer fish is all-natural and it's still extremely deadly.
Doesn't make it any safer than rat poison, right?

I've been using whey protein powder for a couple of weeks and suspect it's been the cause for some big anger problems. The reason why I read this forum was looking if there's any correlation.

One evening this week, I was raging for about 3 hours and had no idea what particularly was making me so irrational. I felt violent and wanted to destroy something - I couldn't think straight and felt like the inside of my head was hot and prickly. The temper has been noted by colleagues as being out of character.

For the past two days, I haven't taken a shake and the mood has been moderate again.
