I went into outpatient surgery on Tuesday for a fistulatomy, and when I woke up from anesthesia, I had a Hemorrhoidectomy. I like to read up on procedures I'm about to undergo beforehand, but this was a major surprise to me when I awoke. After speaking with my Dr. in a little more detail about the procedure, she told me that she removed "all three columns" and left no stitches. She also gave me a print-off of my recovery instructions, but they were very generic - the same ones I got after getting an abscess lanced.
I was given prescriptions for Percoset, Toradol, and Lidocane-Prilocane cream. The pain is pretty minimal while I'm on the Toradol-Percoset combo. I'm actually quite comfortable. I have no trouble urinating, and I am taking Docusate Sodium softgels to soften my stool.
Having a movement seems to be my biggest issue. It took me until yesterday to finally have one, and thank God my fresh dose of meds had just kicked in because the pain was excruciating - I can't even imagine what it would have been like without them. My instructions say to soak in a hot bath of plain water after movements, which I did. After the bath, I hurt for a good hour to two hours, then the pain finally began to subside.
I woke up last night, and now I'm getting random twinges of pain, and an overall bruised feeling down there. I'm wondering if this has to do with my movement. Is that pain normal, or could it be a sign of an infection? I'm fearing the soak wasn't enough to thoroughly clean my wound, especially if I've got an open wound on the inside...
So, there you have it. I was given a surprise hemorrhoidectomy, and I'm just wondering what I should or shouldn't be doing, especially as it relates to movements and keeping clean/sanitary. I have to travel in three weeks (was booked before my surprise surgery), so I want to do everything in my power to make this a quick and easy healing process. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I am shocked that the doctor gave you a procedure that you were not told that you would be receiving. To recover, honestly, I would be talking to a lawyer to figure out what the issue is. What do you think?
