I have reactions to chicken, too. But here’s the kicker: I have the same reaction to chicken that I have to the antibiotic CIPRO, an antibiotic frequently used in chickens. CIPRO is a fluoroquinolone, a rather dangerous class of antibiotics that should be reserved for antibiotic-resistant infections, but is doled out like candy and also fed to livestock. When I last took CIPRO, I got tingling hands and feet and burning skin that persisted for weeks after discontinuing the drug. The same thing happens when I eat chicken. I get tingling hands and feet and burning skin, the same reaction I have to the antibiotic CIPRO. Other common reactions to CIPRO include insomnia, nightmares, stomach upset, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, eczema-like rash, headache, diarrhea, dizziness, blurred vision, nervousness, anxiety. I’ve noticed several people in this blog have listed these symptoms in association with eating chicken, and I’m wondering if it’s the antibiotic (despite claims of antibiotic free chicken). I would have never made the connection between my reaction to chicken (especially chicken breasts) and the antibiotic if I hadn’t experienced the same reaction when taking the drug.

I was diagnosed with ADHD, Fibromyalgia, and IBS. I had my gallbladder removed in my 30’s, so I had trouble really trying to find out what was the sources of my various skin, bowel and joint illness. After a while my doctors and family were treating me like I was a hypochondriac. I was miserable and actually scared to eat anything but marshmallows- but started getting hives even worse- thinking that at any moment I could have an embarrassing episode at work or on travel. I have halted my career trying to reduce stress -it was is an allergy to chicken- not gluten or wheat. Interestingly, for me bananas cause a similar reaction but I did not test positive for any allergic reaction to bananas. Folks, get allergy tested by an Allergist Medical Doctor and know for certain- yes it was painful needles and pin pricks (insurance covered) and consider ALCAT for sensitivities and yes that was expensive ($400-$1,000) but you must be your own advocate. Knowing beats guessing! Yes chicken is in sauces, gelatin (marshmallows, jello & possible medicine coatings) soups, frozen dinners, ramen noodle packets, lunch meat, sausages, hotdogs, and meatballs, bullion (often chicken), potato chips (flavored), crackers (flavored), chicken fat in all forms of lard for frying potatoes etc. Be extra careful and explain and teach others to help keep you well. Tell restaurants or cooks that you are requesting a vegan menu and then add steak or fish- folks get the vegan concept. Be your own citizen scientist! Happy sleuthing- be well!
