My baby (4 years) is constipated and my mother told me to give him apples and apple juice, but not applesauce. Is that true. What is so different in these two – these are basically the same ingredients.

There is a difference in apples (apple juice) and applesauce. The difference is mainly in amount of sugars and pectin. Apple juice for example contains more sugar and liquid, which is helpful with constipation (it relieves it). On the other hand, apple sauce is high with pectin, which makes the stool firmer and may lead to constipation.

Hi,
Well sometimes even doctors mix this one. I know when I had my first child I asked my doctor about this and she wasn’t sure about the difference. She told me that both are almost the same thing and that apples don’t cause constipations in babies. Now I didn’t have any problems with my firstborn, but my younger son had problems with applesauce. Applesauce caused him constipation so I just avoided giving it to him. I think your mother is right, and you should also avoid applesauce, only if your child has diarrhea. I think then it is very helpful along with bananas, toast and rice. Next time when you go to your doctor and ask him about this just to see his opinion.
