I get a terrible pain in my middle, upper back, base of neck area. I also get a horrible feeling in my breastbone and a headache, nausea and feel sweaty. I do not drink often at all (haven't since my 20s and I am in my 50s now) and it does not happen with every kind of alcohol. Some wines, some drink mixes and certain alcohols always like rum. I stick to tequila and vodka but sometime it seems the mixes in a margarita will cause it (maybe it is a cheap tequila???). My sister gets the same symptoms. My allergy doc seemed to think it was related to esophogeal reflux. Who knows....

I am 19 years old and in college, so obviously I am going to have a few drinks here and there.  Sometimes when I drink, I have had episodes where the muscles in my back, specifically in the middle, upper part of my back, feel like they are starting to tense up and it is excruciatingly painful, but it only lasts around 15-30 minutes. I can never predict the next time it will happen, but I noticed that I can drink that same alcoholic drink another time and it won't happen at all. It could happen after I have a few drinks, but it could even happen as soon as I have one shot. I only experience this pain in my back when drinking alcohol.

As soon as I feel this pain, I stop drinking for the rest of the night, but the next day I will be able to drink again. I just recently found out that I have anemia, so I am thinking that the two can somehow be related...

After seeing all these posts I know people understand the pain I go through! I am waiting for an explanation for this.

I know how you feel. I have had this problem for years. If you keep drinking or quit it goes away after about a half an hour. Sugary drinks like captain and coke or margaritas are the worse. Many people say it happens the next day, but I think that is just dehydration that goes with a hang over. This is something completely different. From what I have found on just looking on the internet people have said no test can figure out what this is and no doctor knows for sure what causes it. There are other explainations, but not for these specific symptoms. I hope they figure this out soon, before I have to give up my rum.

OMG I thought I was the only one that this happened too.  Thank you so much for posting this because I have had this problem every since I have started drinking.  I workout and I try to limit how much alcohol (calorie wise) I intake but sometimes I just need to relax after working out.  But my issue is usually when I drink wine.  I don't really drink a lot of hard liquors but sometimes I may visit a Mexican Restaurant where I have some Margaritas and eventually by the end of the SHARED PITCHER I'm in pain all throughout the night.  I've recently gotten a Prednisone Steroid shot that has helped a little but I really like my wine and would hate to have to give it up.  I've had my Kidneys checked several times and nothing was negatively revealed.  I too get my pain in my upper and lower back areas.  I have suffered from back issues (RA/Bone Loss etc.) since high school sought help and nothing has been able to alleviate my back issues.  But the wine definitely enhances it.  I usually don't tell anyone that alcohol is one of the causes of my back pain because I don't have time for the lectures as to why I keep drinking when I know it's gonna hurt me.  Good luck finding your answers.

I also am experiencing lower back pain when I drink, sometimes its so bad I can't even walk I get spazims also. I had stop drinking for a while and my back got better, then I had a drink tonight and my back is hurting bad, so I think there is some truth here. I've read everybodies comment and it just might be the alcohol. I'm gonna have to switch to pot.

i know that this was asked 6 yrs ago but im going to take a shot and answer it i have the same problem expecially if i drink something strong or too fast the pain comes on quicky. I used to think it was because my muscles we tense and i was relaxing but now if it happens to me i drink a glass of water and it goes away almost as quickly as it came on! Drinking dehydrates you so rehydrating is the key. Works for me hopefully it works for you!

When i drink and it doesn't matter how much my upper middle back hurts. i have found a way to relieve this pain and it is to have someone jump on my back while i lay on the floor. I am a rather larger person so most people don't weight enough to hurt me but besides that i have not found any solutions.

all of you are correct alcohol can definitely cause or enhance back pain. i started drinking a bit too much while taking care of my parent with /alz 2009... fastforward i just this week started taking these liver cleanse pills and i swear i am feeling better and it aint placebo effect beacause pain is pain and it has lessened tremendously. it worked for me and i am just hoping this will correct this problem and i too am trying to lessen the drinking. good luck to all of you i am also drinking about 32 oz of h2o per day so give it a shot. the pills can be ordered online or at a healthfood store. im using "suoer liver cleanse", but i know "now" brand sells them as well as many other companies.

I suggest back X-rays. I noticed this has been an occurance since I was about 22, and recently went to a chiropractor due to lower back pain. A few short diagnostic pokes at my spine they recommended X-rays. X-rays came in an HOLY HELL IS MY BACK MESSED UP. Since then I e been on a recovery plan that starts with focusing on mobility and range of motion at first,l along with adjustments. I went from being nearly unable to move to almost completely restoring all the mobility I've lost since I was 16 (even a shoulder injury from golfing when I was 19 has shown signs of recovery). It's a long process, but one thing I've found that will help figure out the problem is to sit upright and bring your shoulder blades together (as though your trying to hold a pencil between them). Hold that for about 5 minutes. If the pain subsides you likely have weak back muscles in comparison to your chest muscles, causing your shoulders to arch forward. It doesn't seem like a huge deal normally, but it puts a lot of strain on your back and is probably pulling your thoracic section of your spine out of place in a baaaaaad way!!
