I've have really sharp pain in my upper back when i inhale... it's painful as it is annoying, & i'm so f-ing tired of doctors prescribing pills to take the pain away! I don't some temporary c**p!!! I want treatment, i tried yoga, walking, swimming, drinking vitamin D & nothing works! If a) this problem doesn't go away or b) someone doesn't take my soul off this corrupt planet then c) i'll kill myself, make 'The Man's' job easier for them. I WANT TREATMENT, NOT A PILL BOTTLE!!!

CHECK FOR PERICARDITIS - THATS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME AND IT ENDED UP BEING PERICARDITIS WHICH CAN BE SERIOUS IF NOT TREATED

Hi. I noticed your post was over a year ago. I have had the same problem of severe mid-back pain while I am breathing. I had to take shallow breaths also to keep the pain down. When I went to the dr, they did do a CT scan and discovered I had a bulged disc in my mid-back. so the dr was thinking that was the reason for the pain.

I was wondering if you ever found out the reason for your pain. I'm having pain again in my mid-back and wondered if it could be something else.

I tweaked a muscle in my back when I simply started the lawn mower and it brought me to my knees.  I iced and took ibuprofen until the pain stopped.  Took about 6 or 7 days.   I didn't have full range of motion for weeks. (This was about 8 weeks ago.)  THEN I was simply helping my husband take a couple things out of the truck and ZING...my back started to scream.  It hurt SOOO bad.  Since then..about 3 days ago...the pain is just hanging around on my left side. Middle of my back. Hurts terribly to breathe in.  Shallow breaths seem to be all I am capable of.  Sneezing sends me thru the roof and yawning sucks.   I have a frozen bag of peas on my back as I am typing.  I can tell you what I've learned....that seems to be helping me.  The reason it hurts to breathe is, as my lungs expand it pushes against the back muscles and rib cage. I take deep breaths multiple times a day. Ten times in a row. It hurts, but it actually helps widen my rib cage and promotes good blood flow.    While massages are fabulous....  I try and refrain from too long a muscle rub down.  It creates heat, which causes or keeps imflammation hanging about.  (This is all from a physical therapist and pharmacist.) I apply ice for 20 minutes once an hour.  That keeps my swelling down.  Ibuprofen, for a pain reliever worked for me...HOWEVER...since I have not fixed this issue, my next step is "the back dr. that I'll see the rest of my life."  These things help ME aleviate pain. Best of luck to all of you.  I am 33 and work 7 days a week.  Two jobs.  I SIMPLY can't have back pain.  I am hearing all of you and share a lot of your fears.  I've read the comments about spots on lungs.  I also just got over bronchitis and that was AFTER my first back tweak.  Talk of spots on the lungs and blood clots....freaks me out.  Best wishes everyone.

I had a terrible pain in my left lower back side as well and it hurt to breathe. After a scan it was determined my spleen had become grossly enlarged because of a blood clot. Because my blood couldn't flow freely it was building up in my spleen causing the pain and in my back left side and when I was taking a breathe. You need to go to the hospital immediately and ask them to scan your spleen. The doctors actually missed it the first time. I was put on blood thinner.

I sometimes experience stabbing pain when I take a deep breath specially when I feel bloated. Sometimes I think that it is just some gas pain so whenever I get bloated I suspect that I have accumulated a lot of toxins in my body that I need some cleansing. I usually take 2 dulcolux and drink some vegetable smoothie made from fresh baby spinach, ginger, few slices of pineapple and cucumber and this helps clean my stomach. The pain usually disappear in a day or two.

your upper back and chest are both in the thoracic region. for example your ribs (which make up your chest) go all the way around and connect to your spine....

I also have this problem, and I've had it for about a week now. Not only does my back hurt when I breathe, but I can't even move around that much, either. And sometimes at random moments -- and I'd say this has only happened like three times so far -- it feels like my lungs will cramp up or something. I don't know how else to explain that, but I have to keep completely still and wait for the pain to pass. It doesn't take long to subside, but it's certainly too painful to just shrug off...

I'm only nineteen years old, and I'd expect something like this to happen to more elderly people. I plan to see a doctor, but if I could get some answers on here as well, that'd be great. Oh, and for those of you who said you've received an x-ray, and the x-ray shows that there is something on your lung...well, if you've figured out what that "something" is, will you please share? I'm moreover curious, but I really hope there isn't anything on my right lung...but if there is, I'd like to know what exactly that would mean for me asap.

same exact pain - just started yesterday, but has increasingly gotten worst, I forego breathing deeply to just avoid the pain,
I may have strained the muscles in my lower back. we entertained 30 people for Christmas day and I was un and down the step often and on my feet all day. I have suspected kidney stones or UTI, but no other symptoms. the pain is so intense I am not able to sleep.
Should I see my internist or ER or wait it out.

I had this several years ago. I even went to the ER they told me it was a strained muscle in my back. It got so bad I had to hold onto the wall when I walked and could barely breath. I went to my own doctors he ran a few tests and discovered I had two blood clots in my lungs . I was put in the hospital and on blood thinners for about ten days i have been fine since. I hope everything turns out ok. I should add this happened about a week after I had a miscarriage. It was not just out of the blue.

I experience back pain most mornings when I awake, but once I am up out the bed everytime I breath it feels as if my ribs are crushing my organs and it hurts like hell. The last time I saw a doctor she couldn tell me what it was. What am I to do at this point?
