Hi,
If you have a fever still you imght have an infection. Were you prescribed antibiotics? Please go see a doctor if you weren't.
The blood and pus is normal. It can occur for up to a whole month. Try to take stool softeners so you put less pressure down there.

Hi Sed,

I am going to have my gland removed by the end of the month (november) as this is my 8th cyst in the last 3 yrs. They have drained it but it doesent work. Last Friday they tried to put in the Word Cather and could not get it in. I am very very scared about the process. I have read all of the comments from all of the brave women and am feeling torn. Its seems like its different for everyone. Most of the post opt issues are the same expect for the scaring. I have been married eight yrs to a great man and not worried about the scare. I am more concern about the pain and the bleeding after word and the length of time to recover. Any advice or suggestions.

it is amazing to see so many women have gone through what i have. i have had three bartholins gland cysts and one abscess over a three year period and two days ago had one of the glands removed. at the moment there is still quite a lot of blood and i am in more pain than when just had the cysts removed but i am trying to stay hopeful for a positive outcome.

Hello Ladies I REALLY HOPE SOMEONE CAN ANSWER MY QUESTION?!?!

I am 20 years old and I had noticed something was wrong when my vagina wasn't lubricating as much before/during sexual intercourse. Turns out it was a Bartholin Cyst. After several other symptoms and confirmation that there was no urgency to get this removed, the fact my vagina was often dry and not lubricating was my main reason to get the cyst removed!  Firstly, did anyone else get this symptom to start off with?

I went into hospital on Wednesday 7th March 2012 to get the cyst drained. I was looking at my discharge notes this morning and too my horror I noticed that they had removed the ENTIRE GLAND.  Reading these posts today, it appears that this may not be a bad thing at all, and has eased my mind a little, but my concerns are this..... First of all, has anybody who has had both the cyst and entire gland removed experienced any changes/complications with your vagina lubricating before/during sexual intercourse/arousal?!

I was horrified when I saw that my gland had been removed as I thought I was only getting my cyst drained, and was not happy that a surgeon had removed something without my say so and secondly my theory was that when my gland was blocked due to the cyst, only my right gland was working and lubricating me (poorly, affecting my sex life, pretty annoying as it wasn't very lubricated at all - my main reason to sort the problem out in the first place) so presumably, the right gland alone was not producing enough lubrication and surely the removal of the cyst and GLAND will leave my vagina in the same state meaning this was all a waste of time?!?!

I am on day 8 of my recovery, and reading over previous posts, sounds like my answers on what is supposed to be happening have been answered on the physical side of things, still hanging, slight blood, slight discomfort etc.

Please can someone ease my worries?!

Hi Smurf,

Sorry to hear that you had that removed without your consent. Actually it is probably best that you had it removed right away without further complications.. If you drained your cyst and went on with life you will find it to return right away. I found that mine “activated” when I would try any activity that required the gland to be used. I also heard that trauma can be another reason why your bartholyn gland doesn’t function. Usually it has to do with the hole that secretes the liquid being blocked by something.

Yes, you will find that you can’t get wet after this. Stick to lube. It sucks but there is nothing else you can do. After your surgery you will have some “battle scars” downt here and things will feel a little bit weird even during sex. Its just something you will have to deal with.

Don’t think of your surgery as a waste of time. Its actually saving you a lot of problems down the line when you start having sex again. Also, sometimes parts in our body just don’t function like they should – it happens and we learn to deal with it. You will be fine, just take it easy and be nice to that area!

I have been suffering w/ this problem for 5 years and have had it drained and marsupialized only to have the cyst abcess again. My initial gyn (male) told me that the gland needed to be swollen in order to find it so that he could remove it. However, for the past 2 years he has refused to remove it b/c he says it's very bloody and painful and told me I was wasting his time. So, after seeing my new female gyn, she told me she needs to wait until the swelling has gone down and the area is completely drained. I have surgery scheduled in 3 days and I'm going in for a final no-swelling check tomorrow. I'm confused and worried b/c of the two very different things I've been told.

Have you had yours removed yet? And, if so, was it swollen when it was removed?

I have been through complete hell for the past 8 years dealing with these cysts. I first noticed it when I got pregnant with my son. Had it drained, which didn't work, and got blood poisoning..had the catheter 4 times, they never worked...so I finally opted to have the whole gland removed. I had this surgery 4 years ago and still have many problems. It took me around a year to feel somewhat normal. My dr told me it was due to my cyst being the size of a BASEBALL!!! But here I sit, painfully, tonight wondering what's going on. I occasionally have pain and just put if off to it being the scar, yet tonight I am in a ton of pain. I have read that some people don't have the whole gland removed and they have cysts after, yet I was assured he got the whole thing. Has anyone had this happen?

Hi Jgio,

I think your issue is that the whole gland has not been fully removed. Sometimes if they leave even the slightest bit of tissue left it can leave enough room for complications, and even grow back (!!!!).
Another issue is that after the surgery the doctor should have left you with a permanent opening, just in case to drain excess fluid that can build up inside.
I would recommend seeing a different doctor if you are still suffering.. It should not be so :/

I just saw this and was wondering how it went. I just had my Bartholin Gland removed on the right side and am experiencing none of the bruising and swelling that you described.

I didn't look at my bruising until recently - I was a fraidy cat!  Stitches make me woozy.  Stitches on me down there may have caused a TKO.

First I had a Bartholin Gland Cyst.  The first doctor simply lanced it - which I read is against recommendations b/c it generally comes right back.  It did.  I went back and only then did he insert a WORD catheter and it took 6weeks to heal (on top of the previous 2-3 weeks).  Did I mention that he didn't prescribe pain killers the first time?  And 2nd time what he prescribed wasn't covered by my insurance.  Nice.

2 years later it came back.  Only it didn't bother me b/c I think there was alot of scar tissue surrounding it.  I went to a new doctor & thought he was only going to work on the cyst.  He said he had to remove the entire gland b/c that in conjunction with the cyst was nearly the size of tennis ball.  It became infected, so I strongly recommend sitz baths 3x a day as soon as possible to keep the wound clean.

Its been 3 weeks, but the swelling is mostly all gone.  I just finished antibiotics, but am still taking sitz baths as a precaution.  I can walk normal again.  There is some numbness.  Part of labia is sewn to my clitoris?  I don't understand that.  And, the front of my pubic bone still feels strangely bruised and tingly.  Its difficult to explain.  Most of the pain is gone, but I'm still getting what I call 'zingers' every now and then.  That is, I move a certain way and ZING! it hurts.

In another week I go for my follow-up.  I hope I can start pilates after that time to maybe help this healing along.
