I totally disagree with Imodium since it does not cross the blood brain barrier. Do more research before trying over the counter diarrhea medication for withdrawals.

I was asking "Dr.House". I wanted to get a medical point of view. I know Imodium doesn't cross the BBB. That just means you can't get high of it. The trick is that Imodium does the same thing to block you up as other narcotics. I've looked it up on many sites and books. Imodium belongs to the same drug class as oxy or even H, the only difference being that (as stated earlier) Imodium doesn't cross the BBB (blood brain barrier). Your gastro system shouldn't know the difference.

If someone with some real knowledge could answer this thank you.

P.S. there are ways to make Imodium to cross the BBB, I found that out during my reading.

Guest - I do not work at a hospital but own and run my own practice. NP's go through med school like any other MD, but different along the lines of what actually they study. They can write prescriptions and treated just a doctor because they have a doctrine in intravenous medicine. Hospitals are a joke to work it, been there / done that. They are more concerned about making money and and TREATING PROBLEMS VS RESOLVING PROBLEMS.

I offer medicaid and run a free clinic on Saturdays to help the poor. SO many people cannot afford insurance, especially self employed. Even the homeless, I take care of them too and don't expect one dime from them.

If you practice medicine, the bottom line is to help people, just like you and me, period. Not money. Most of my income goes towards my stupid ass student loans, those run $3000 a month.

As for the Imodium, YES it does work, but for long term. Your GI trac basically stops and while you eat, you are just filling up your entire trac of food and feces. Some people I have seen actually throw up feces for taking it for months on end.

Light opiate users, say under 200mg daily, this would work. Give yourself 3-4 days and ween off of it. It's NOT an opiate, but an opoid, that hits your receptors in your GI and intestines . Great way to do it or 'trick'

I am actually doing it and have since Saturday, no w/d at all. Just MAKE SURE You ween down from it, don't stop it all at once, it has addictive properties and cause mild discomfort.

Someone asked about Suboxone - NO WAY -----UNLESS you are on heroin. All other man-made opiates need to be treated under your PCP. Suboxone is a nasty drug and have seen first hand what it does to people 1-6 years down the road, like they never fully recover. Most powerful opiate out there. Even if you plan on using it, only use it for 5 days MAX. Not years like some other PCP's offer, that's money pit. They know you will come back month after month because you NEED the drug. That's no resolving the issue, only treating it. Legalized drug dealer if you ask me. Cheers! Ron

Just an FYI - if you live in Chicago, I would be glad to see you and help out as much as I can regardless if you have insurance or not. I am in the business of helping people and proud of it.

This is a question for Dr.Rob (u gave away ur name at the end of your post). I won't call you Dr.House. I sent you a message but I'm not sure if you received it. You sound like a good Doc, I've run into so many bad ones who just don't give a s..t about helping you.

I was on 24 mg of Suboxone for over two years due to a debilitating OxyContin addiction. I recently switched to Hydromorophone, I was down to 6mg a day, but my pain doc put me up to 24 mg a day to control my pain. Do you consider me a mild or heavy opoid user? I am taking them exactly as prescribed. If you do think the Imodium trick will work for me, how many do you think I'd need to take to feel normal? Thanks for any information you can give me :)

Oh ya. The NP's in my country do not have half the training as the one's in the U.S. of A. There's no way a nurse can write a prescription of any kind here. Maybe if it's an emergency at the hospital and there was no Doctor around. They can take blood though.

Hi Guest - Just a thought: you might want to ask others who are in your same situation for advice, rather than rely on "Dr. Rob" (incidentally he said his name is Ron, not Rob). Like any other online personality, I suggest you take his claim to be an MD with a grain of salt - there is plenty in his post to indicate that this might be a fib.

So true. Maybe a good Doctor is THAT hard to come by. Thanks for the heads up.

To combat any issues with the loperamide causing constipation I suggest taking a good probiotic and ensuring you are drinking enough water. Proper nutrition is important all the time, but especially when you are trying to heal in any way. Best wishes to all, you CAN do it!!!

Opiate and opiod are used almost interchangeably. An opiod is a drug that does not specifically come from the opium poppy or its derivatives. An opiate (codiene, morphine, and thebaine) comes from opium extracts.

It does cross the BBB, however, it gets pumped out quickly by P-Glycoprotein.
