I had unprotected sex exactly 8 days ago and am on birth control. Six days ago I started taking an antibiotic for an infection. I know this antibiotic makes birth control less effective. I have been having random spotting yesterday and today. I took a pregnancy test and it said negative. So i was wondering if my antibiotic could be causing the random spotting? Yesterday the spotting happened once and was somewhat heavy and today it was just when i wiped and was more like discharge. I also skipped my last period using the pill, so i guess this could also be the reason for spotting? Please help.
Actually abbey you don't need me to answer you, you did it yourself!!!! ;-) XD Both the antibiotic and the new pill can cause intermitant bleeding! Just watch out for next month, as that it is sometimes a sign that the pill you are on is not right for you - causing the bleeding! And also it is a myth that antibiotics cause birthcontrol failure = it CAN cause about a 1% decrease in it's effectiveness - which would take the pill down to 98% effective but that is rare! So just keep an eye on the bleeding OK? Good luck and healht!
if you're experiencing spotting, that's a sign that the pill's effectiveness has decreased, as the blood is released with the egg. however, that doesn't mean that you would have released an egg, but it's just better to use a back up contraceptive, assuming you don't want to be pregnant. common sense really!
