I've had this problem for years now, redness around bottom sides of my nose and the top part of my upper lip... It gets flaky when dry, etc. I've tried a number of different things over the years from benzoil peroxide, to hydrogen peroxide, to otc anti-fungal creams. I'm in the process of trying topical doxycycline (though it came in pill form I'm just opening them up and rubbing them into the affected area). Not sure if this will help at all, but we'll see.

baby oil can make your skin break out pretty badly if applied to heavily, so be careful- just a thin layer if at all.

I get the same thing and for years now off and on. The only thing that EVER works is washing my face with plain water, no makeup and 7 days of Minocycline. Nothing else. Ive tried all sorts of antibiotics and creams NOTHING worked. Then my doctor gave me Minocycline and after 3 days it was about 90%gone. In a week it was GONE and I didnt get it back until the next winter - so about a year. It was fantastic as I would get it in winter and it would last until summer! every year!
Just be careful as this drug is a SERIOUS antiboitic and have side effects...

hope this helps!

Sounds like seborrheic dermatitis. If it is, there is no know cause or cure. It's aggravated by cold weather. Treat with nizoral once or twice daily, hydro cortisone before bed. Symptoms should taper off. Then nizoral 2-3 times a week to keep it at bay. If symptoms move into hairline, switch shampoos to the selinium head & shoulders shampoo in the dark blue bottle. I have this condition myself. It's caused by a build-up of a particular form of yeast on the skin. The strategy is keep the yeast build-up at bay, and you control the symptoms. No one knows how to curb the body's production of this yeast.
Nizoral is available at your grocery store, as is hydro cortisone cream, and the head and shoulders shampoo.

I WAS JUST AT THE DERMATOLOGIST TODAY AND HE GAVE ME A SCRIPT FOR DESONIDE, HE SAID THAT IT WORKS BETTER THAN THE CORTISONE CREAM. HE TOLD ME TO USE IT TWICE A DAY AND WHEN IT CLEARS UP STOP, BUT IT WILL COME BACK AGAIN, ALSO IF YOU HAVE ANY LIKE WET SKIN THAT HAS A TERRIBLE ODOR HE SAID TO USE 1/4 CUP OF WHITE VINEGAR AND DAB THAT ON IT. THAT WILL DRY IT UP. I WAS USING BABY POWDER WITH CORN STARCH IN AND THE PERFUME OR BABY SMELL IN THE POWDER IRRITATED IT MORE. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I am in my early 40's and have had this same problem for 20 years! I have flaky, dry skin and brown pigment spots. When I wear lipstick it is not as obvious but it's there and it bothers me a lot. I decided to look it up on-line since I have gone to dermatologists over the years and nothing has helped. I came up with the following as of last night and I already notice a bit of a difference. I washed my face with head and shoulders shampoo, then mixed one part apple vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle and sprayed on affected area, rubbed and all the flakes seemed to come off! when I was done with this part of the treatment I could not believe I did not have flaky skin for the first time in many years. Then I applied Zinc Oxide Ointment Skin Protectant (used for baby diaper rash) and rubbed until it is not visible since it is white. I already notice a difference. I am so happy I thought I would share this with all of you! if anyone has any other advise please post!

Finally someone with the exact same situation as me. I used cortisone creams and aloe gel for over 5 years then changed to only using head and shoulders, unfortunately the redness remains and I got spf 100 sunscreen. What I didn't realise is that sun is good for this condition! I now put on a moisturiser with spf 15 and it's better. But I also now take tissue salts everyday particularly Kali Mur, Nat Mur, and Kali Sulph, I keep my sugar intake to a minimum, and am going for a allergy test soon for dairy, wheat, gluten and cassein in particular.

Unfortunately through cortisone creams even just a 0.5% cream I made the condition worse so now I will never use them again. If your Dermatologist or doctor prescribes you such a cream as is the norm don't take it!

They'll also tell you that diet has nothing to do with it - I seriously doubt that.

I got psoriasis on my nose through the use of cortisone creams and the head and shoulders seemed to make it worse. I bought some high potency aloe gel designed for problem skins and it cleared it up in a few days.

I go easy with the head and shoulders as it can strip the skin causing dryness and redness.

I found a product by neutrogena which is a light moisturiser with tee trea oil in it and it won't clog up your pores. It's good for our condition, but may burn after applying head and shoulders.

I haven't found a complete solution but am getting there thanks to the incredible people on this forum and others who have persisted in the fight for a solution! Because there is a healthy solution for this, no matter what doctors and dermatologists may tell you!!

I hope this helps.

Three tips from my experience.

- Cut down on alcohol and nights out
- Stop using all harsh creams and products on your face. Wash only with luke warm water and a clean towel
- If shaving, ensure razor blades are kept clean.

The above has improved my SD considerably. Healthy diet - vitamin supplements and the like are good for general health of course. But did not improve my SD in any way.

I have the same red flaky skin around mouth and nose, thought it was rosacea but treatment for that was marginally helpful at best, so being a vegetarian and not loving the iron supplements I should take seems to be the cause....check iron deficiency symptoms, heres a link where I found this info ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed seems to be helping so far, still using a hydrocortizone cream also. Hope this helps!

Red & extremely flaky skin around nose and mouth? I've got it going on right now, but I'm controlling it, and when I'm consistent, I'm pretty much symptom free. I've had this problem come and go over the years. Tried lots of things. I believe it is stress and diet related as well as genetic. Much of my family has very sensitive skin. I haven't had problems for years, then last month...it came back. It'll probably run it's course in another month or so....in the meantime...this WORKS (and takes the RED out, too).

I know this sounds a bit strange, but this is an inexpensive treatment (it works great on diaper rash, too). Get a bottle of Mylanta liquid (a generic antacid will work fine). I wash my face, gently (no soap, just a mild, gentle cleanser, preferably perfume free). After cleansing I use a little apple cidar vinegar mixed with water as a toner (about 1/2 - 1 teaspoon full of vinegar in a cup of water). If it burns, decrease the vinegar (a tingle is fine). I put it in a spritzer bottle and make a fresh batch every couple of days (or at least once a week). After my face is cleansed and toned, I dab the antacid onto the inflamed areas around my nose and mouth. With a light touch, I can let it dry and apply make-up right over it and all's well. I dab on alot more at night before bed time. Within 72 hours, or so, you'll be symptom free...but keep it up for at least 10 days to 2 weeks or you'll just have to start all over again.

Oh, an omega 3 supplement is a great idea, too. I had been taking one, ran out, and I'm not sure, but I suspect that (and a very stressful month) triggered this latest episode.

Good Luck. Let me know if this works for you!

Look up "Synalar". I use it and it gets rid of the redness, itching, flaking, dryness. It should take around 2-3 days for it to work. I have on bought only one Synalar medicine so far and it has lasted me almost one year and it only cost me around 20-25 dollars.

I have had red flaky skin around my nose (nostril area) and right under my lip where your chin starts to crease. I try to scrub off the flaky skin but that just makes it more irritated, red, and it starts to sting. when i do go to use moisturizer I try to scrub away the flakes and it burns. i would like to know how to get rid of it and what it is called. i drink lots of water and i live in a humid climate, if that helps. What should i do to get rid of this unattractive, dead, flaky, red, skin? Thanks for your help.

first thing all these symptoms sounds a lot like a type of fungle infection.  more know as ring worm, but there are different types of ring worm.  If it's on your face it's probably Tinea Faciei (face fungus).  Misdiagnosis and treatment with a topical steroid can result in tinea incognito.  A condition where ringworm fungus will grow without typical features like a distinctive raised border.  this is why u need to get physician to diagnose this correctly so not to get wrong treatment with no results.  hope this helps.  this type of fungus grows around warm hot areas like tanning beds, soil, used towels etc.

I have suffered from this condition for the past few years. I have dry flaky redness on my chin, side of the nose extending onto the cheeks and around my eyebrows. I went to the dermatologist and he gave me some cream that would take care of it for a little while, but then it would come back. It was a steroid cream so I wasn't to keen on using it continually for the rest of my life. Then I tried the hydrocortisone method which works for a while but then it comes back with a vengeance. Then I tried various lotions and making sure my face was scrubbed very well once or twice a day. No luck. Then I tried changing my diet. I eliminated coffee, sugar, chocolate, etc. Again, no luck. It finally dawned on me that when I was a teen I started having problems with dandruff (I am 31 now), maybe this issue is just how the skin dryness presents itself on my face. The only dandruff shampoo that works for me is the Selsun Blue Medicated (the imitation off brand works too). So for the past month every day when I wash my hair I use a very small amount of the shampoo on the affected areas of my face. My general practice for my shampoo is to wash my hair first and leave it for a couple minutes, so that is what I do with my face also. It disappeared after a couple days and now there is only a hardly noticeable redness (actually I can only notice it when I look closely). If you suffer from dandruff it may just be how it presents on your face, after all it is still your head. :-D Try using whatever dandruff shampoo works for your scalp. Good luck!

Maybe I should put dandruff shampoo in a 3oz. tube and sell it for $5 as face wash. ;-)
