I broke my right femur in a car accident about 10 years ago. I now have a rod and two screws. One in my hip and one right above my knee. The rod and the screw in my hip never give me problems. But recently when I squat down to grab something or pet a dog my screw above my knee seems to shift and gets "stuck". Sometimes I can squat back down and it will shift back down, but this time it seems to be "stuck" for good.  I know removing the screw would be the best bet. However, not currently having insurance is preventing me from this. Has anyone ever had this experience? Any help would be appareciated.

I've heard of this happening. I was told its from cartilage getting hung up on the screw.

Just work on bending and extending your knee throughout the day. Those muscles and tendons stay tight for awhile. I didn't have my brace removed until the 5th week. I was at about 60-70 degrees at that time. Just bending that leg back and forth loosens those muscles up. If you can't stand the pain holding it out and down while sitting, I would lay down on a bed or couch on your side and bend it back and forth. That way the whole leg is supported. For me it was so painful to lift it from a sitting position.

I, too, had the same surgery, and am having difficulty walking. The surgical leg is shorter, as well, which causes even more difficulty. I have been going to out-patient therapy 3 x per week, not aqua, however. Very discouraged!!! Are you still having problems?

If you feel something is wrong go with your gut. I hate an operation on my femur and his and I complained with my first operation with him that something was wrong and he ignored my cries but sure enough the plate on my femur had come out of the bone and we had to place a femoral nail down my hip. After that operation I knew something was still wrong again my cries were ignored come to find out he placed the rod in too far and it had come out of the bone above my knee and it had destroyed my knee. Don't give up, go to someone who will listen. Go to the ER they will have to do test to find the answers.

I broke my femur 3 yrs ago. Horrible hip pain and felt like the rod was digging into the tissue with every movement. My leg rotated in. I had the rod removed after six months. What a relief in my hip area but it still hurt in my hip and my leg turned in. I did yoga and biked and tried so hard to rehab. Finally went to another doctor. Internally rotated thirty degrees. He went in to rebreak it... Discovered there was a hip fracture that was missed and my leg was internally rotated from the hip not the fracture site. But I had valgus deformity at fracture site. It took him 4 hours to fix everything the best he could. That leg still hasn't healed. It's been 10 months. Leg is half inch shorter than the other one. Just had the rod removed even though it has a little more healing to go. But the rod was causing so much pain and bruising. Praying it heals and no more surgery. Always listen to your body. Nobody would listen until the second surgeon. He was shocked I had been getting around as well as I had. Both rods caused me horrible pain and I'm pretty tuff. I know others that haven't had any problems with a rod. I actually have one in my other tibia that doesn't bother me. But don't doubt yourself. That is a miserable pain.

I broke my hip screw and my knee screw. I had a rod and screw replacement in Feb 2016 and then just had another one in Nov. I'm now seen at Duke University Orthopedics. They are stumped as to why I'm having so much pain and can barely walk. It's so frustrating. Now they are sending me to endocrinology. It's been over 2 years now (Dec 1, 2014) and still no answers.
